In general, it is difficult to select a satisfactory product concept because the information in the early stage of design process is subjective, qualitative, and even uncertain to design engineers. The correlations among engineering characteristics for a p ...

In high-speed dry milling of thin-walled parts, the cutter-workpiece temperature rises asymptotically with cutting speed, causing excessive cutter tooth wear and workpiece thermal expansion, which in turn reduces the cutter life and produces dimensional and geometrical variabilities in the machined part. Therefore, a basic understanding of the thermal aspect of machining and the effecting parameters is essential for achieving better part quality with improved productivity. This paper presents a transient mi

Used in a very large variety of applications, drilling is one of the most complex manufacturing processes. Most of the research on drilling was done in the field of metal cutting since, in this case, high precision and quality are needed. The use of composite materials in engineering applications has increased in recent years, and in many of these applications drilling is one of the most critical stages in the manufacturing process. Delamination and extensive tool wear, affecting the quality and the costs,

The rigid body motion of the workpieces and their elastic-plastic deformations induced during high speed milling of thin-walled parts are the main root causes of part geometrical and dimensional variabilities; these are governed mainly from the choice of process plan parameters such as fixture layout design, operation sequence, selected tool path strategies and the values of cutting variables. Therefore, it becomes necessary to judge the validity of a given process plan before going into actual machining. T

Recently, with emerging technologies, visibility of vehicle information over the whole lifecycle becomes possible. The visibility opens up new challenging issues for improving the efficiency of vehicle operations. One of the most challenging problems arising during the middle of life (MOL) of vehicles is the predictive maintenance on engine oil. For this, in this study, we focus on developing a predictive algorithm to estimate the quality of the engine oil of a vehicle by analyzing its degradation status wi

In comparison with metals, long-fiber reinforced composites have a layered structure, with different properties throughout their thickness. When drilling such structures, internal defects like delamination occur, caused by the drilling loads and their unev ...

This paper presents a new method for evaluating product designs at their early stage of development according to different criteria and a case-study-based project. The goal is to select among imprecisely defined design alternatives in a multicriteria conte ...

This paper deals with compatible component selection problems, where the goal is to find combinations of components satisfying design constraints given a product structure, component alternatives available in design catalogue for each subsystem of the prod ...

The selection of optimal parameters in high pressure die casting process (HPDC) has been long recognized as a complex nonlinear problem due to the involvement of a large number of interconnected process variables, each influencing the flow behavior of molten metal inside the die cavity and thus part quality and productivity. In the present work a physical model called Neural Network based Casting Process model (NN-CastPro) has been developed for real time estimation of optimal HPDC process parameters. By su

The product development process (PDP) in innovative companies is becoming more and more complex, encompassing many very diverse activities, and involving a fairly big number of actors, spread across different professions, teams and organizations. One of th ...

This chapter concerns the use of computing for ecological evaluation in the manufacturing industry. Here, ecological evaluation means identification and quantisation of various manufacturing process characteristics from the point of view of the environment ...

This paper considers a production planning problem in disassembly systems, which is the problem of determining the quantity and timing of disassembling end-of-use/life products in order to satisfy the demand of their parts or components over a planning horizon. The case of single product type without parts commonality is considered for the objective of minimizing the sum of setup and inventory holding costs. To show the complexity of the problem, we prove that the problem is NP-hard. Then, after deriving th

In recent years, going green has become a strategic priority in manufacturing which has evolved from the growing awareness of the need for environmentally friendly processes and products. Recent trends in developing new machining strategies able to support ...

Wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) is investigated in the perspective of zero-defect manufacturing with the scope to detect anomalous process conditions leading to typical defects generated during WEDM, i.e. the occurrence of lines and marks on the ...

We consider a three-stage dynamic flexible flow shop scheduling problem in which jobs of multiple types arrive dynamically over time, a quality feedback mechanism is present, and the setup timing and the process defect rate are closely related. At each machine in the second stage, a sequence-independent setup operation is necessary to changeover job types. Once a setup is done for a job type at a machine, the defect rate for the job type at the machine is reset to a low and stable phase which will be mainta
