In previously known imaging devices as in still and motion cameras, for example, image sensor signal response typically is linear as a function of intensity of incident light. Desirably, however, akin to the response of the human eye, response is sought to ...

We investigate how the sound field induced by an acoustic event evolves over space and time. The characteristics of its bidimensional Fourier spectrum are analyzed and spatio-temporal sampling results using an array of microphones are provided for differen ...

Systems with hundreds of microphones for acoustic field acquisition, or hundreds of loudspeakers for rendering, have been proposed and built. To analyze, design, and apply such systems requires a framework that allows us to leverage the vast set of tools a ...

In this paper we review some recent interactions between harmonic analysis and data compression. The story goes back of course to Shannon’s

Super-directional loudspeaker arrays can be used to achieve high directivity in a limited low-frequency range. As opposed to microphone arrays, the distance between the loudspeakers has to be relatively large, resulting in aliasing starting at relatively l ...

Chip designers place on-chip thermal sensors to measure local temperatures, thus preventing thermal runaway situations in many-core processing architectures. However, the quality of the thermal reconstruction is directly dependent on the number of placed s ...

Consider an unknown surface painted with a band-limited texture. We show that only the knowledge of the bandwidth of the texture is enough to estimate the shape of the surface from a single image taken by a camera. We model the problem as a central project ...

In a view, e.g. of scenery, of a shopping or museum display, or of a meeting or conference, automated processing can be used to annotate objects which are visible from a viewer position. Annotation can be of objects selected by the viewer, and can be displ ...

We consider the problem of estimating room geometry from the acoustic room impulse response (RIR). Existing approaches addressing this problem exploit the knowledge of multiple RIRs. In contrast, we are interested in reconstructing the room geometry from a ...

It is disclosed an acoustic tomography method to improve the time of flight estimation, said method comprising the steps of: sequentially triggering a set of N transmitters so as to generate a sequence of N acoustic waves through a volume being scanned; re ...

An encoder/decoder for multi-channel audio data, and in particular for audio reproduction through wave field synthesis. The encoder comprises a two-dimensional filter-bank to the multi-channel signal, in which the channel index is treated as an independent ...

Three-dimensional nonseparable perfect reconstruction filter banks using three-dimensional nonseparable sampling by two, FCO, are proposed. Filter structures are derived and applied to digital video. Separation into two bands is obtained, and it is shown to perform better from the perceptual point of view than interlaced sequences resulting from the quincunx sampling of a progressively scanned signal in time-vertical dimensions

We show how introducing known scattering can be used in direction of arrival estimation by a single sensor. We first present an analysis of the geometry of the underlying measurement space and show how it enables localizing white sources. Then, we extend t ...

This paper presents a general class of gossip-based averaging algorithms, which are inspired from Uniform Gossip [1]. While Uniform Gossip works synchronously on complete graphs, weighted gossip algorithms allow asynchronous rounds and converge on any conn ...

This article provides a technical overview of mobile ad hoc networks and describes their long-term potential. It covers current research, and describes major technical challenges, including networking, real-time services, and software. It shows that by their very nature, mobile ad hoc networks can bring a paradigm shift in the way networks are organized and operated, and can even lead to a fundamental change in the relationships between information technology and societal organization. As an illustration of

Lattice networks are widely used in regular settings like grid computing, distributed control, satellite constellations, and sensor networks. Thus, limits on capacity, optimal routing policies, and performance with finite buffers are key issues and are add ...

Emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere are a serious environmental concern. In order to understand and predict their effects, it is necessary to estimate the exact quantity and timing of the emissions, from sensor measurements taken at differe ...

Downhill skiers enter a different dimension on the racecourse, but they are still subject to the laws of physics. A new Swiss system integrates GPS, video, and biosensors for precise position, velocity and heart-rate measurement, helping coaches and athletes plot the best "line" and improve training procedures - while enhancing television broadcasts.

We revisit the topics of near-field adaptive beamforming and source localization following an alternative approach based on a spatio- temporal spectral representation of the acoustic wave field. With the proposed method, the wave field is expressed as a se ...

In this paper, we present a technique to record a large set of room impulse responses using a microphone moving along a tra jectory. The technique processes the signal recorded by the microphone to reconstruct the signals that would have been recorded at a ...
