A method that exploits an information theoretic framework to extract optimized audio features using video information is presented. A simple measure of mutual information (MI) between the resulting audio and video features allows the detection of the activ ...

Assessing emotional states of users evoked during their multimedia consumption has received a great deal of attention with recent advances in multimedia content distribution technologies and increasing interest in personalized content delivery. Physiologic ...

Introduction Baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) is essential to ensure rapid adjustment to variations in blood pressure (BP). Spontaneous baroreflex function can be assessed using continuous recordings of blood pressure. The goal of this study was to compare fou ...

Easy-to-use and accurate heart rate variability (HRV) assessments are essential in athletes??? follow-up, but artifacts may lead to erroneous analysis. Artifact detection and correction are the purpose of extensive literature and implemented in dedicated a ...

Multiple organization indices have been used to predict the outcome of stepwise catheter ablation in long-standing persistent atrial fibrillation (AF), however with limited success. Our study aims at developing innovative organization indices from baseline ...

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common type of human arrhythmia. Beside its clinical description as absolute arrhythmia, its diagnosis has been assessed for years by visual inspection of the surface electrocardiogram (ECG). Due to the much higher amplitude of the electrical ventricular activity, the analysis of atrial fibrillation requires the previous isolation of the atrial activity component. In this work, an approach to separate atrial and ventricular signal components, decomposing the signal over

The goal of the challenge 2009 is to predict which patients will experience acute hypotensive episode (AHE) within a forecast window. AHE may result in dangerous complications and even death. Predicting the onset of AHE would be of clear benefit to a patie ...

Sustained atrial fibrillation (AF) is maintained by sites displaying high dominant frequency (DF). In patients (pts) with long-standing persistent AF (LS-pAF), their spatial distribution and the presence of a left-to-right atrial DF gradient remain poorly ...

Background Superimposition of farfield (FF) and nearfield (NF) bipolar voltage electrograms (BVE) complicates the confirmation of pulmonary vein (PV) isolation after catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation. Our aim was to develop an automatic algorithm ba ...

In pacing-induced models of atrial fibrillation (AF) that mimic atrial high-frequency foci, the increase in AF susceptibility over time is not paralleled by any increase in dispersion of repolarization (DOR). Measurements of effective refractory periods (ERP), however, were performed by using extrastimuli, which bears significant limitation because it cannot evaluate any dynamic increase in DOR that may arise at rapid rates. Repolarization alternans (Re-ALT), a beat-to-beat alternation in action potential d

A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a communication system, that implements the principle of "think and make it happen without any physical effort". This means a BCI allows a user to act on his environment only by using his thoughts, without using peripheral nerves and muscles. Nearly all BCIs contain as a core part a machine learning algorithm that is used to discriminate different brain activities. In the present work we use a bayesian framework for machine learning, the evidence framework, to develop a v

Background and objective The automated detection of atrial activations (AAs) recorded from intracardiac electrograms (IEGMs) during atrial fibrillation (AF) is challenging considering their various amplitudes, morphologies and cycle length. Activation time ...

This study aims at evaluating the potential of a wrist-type photoplethysmographic (PPG) device to discriminate between atrial fibrillation (AF) and other types of rhythm. Data from 17 patients undergoing catheter ablation of various arrhythmias were proces ...

Cardiac arrhythmias (CAs) are associated with critical heart-related complications such as stroke or heart failure. Because of the intermittent and asymptomatic presentation of some CAs in their early stages, the screening remains limited using traditional methods based on ECG. Recent advances in photoplethysmography (PPG) have revealed substantial potential for wearable devices to detect CAs within large populations. Although PPG has demonstrated efficiency in discriminating atrial fibrillation (AF) from n

While intermittent hypoxic training (IHT) has been reported to evoke cellular responses via hypoxia inducible factors (HIFs) but without substantial performance benefits in endurance athletes, we hypothesized that repeated sprint training in hypoxia could ...

Background: Consistently successful patient outcomes following catheter ablation (CA) for treatment of persistent atrial fibrillation (pers-AF) remain elusive. We propose an electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis designed to (1) refine selection of patients most ...

In this chapter, we propose a novel method for tracking oscillatory components in EEG signals by means of an adaptive filter-bank. The specificity of our tracking algorithm is to maximize the oscillatory behavior of its output rather than its spectral power, which shows interesting properties for the observation of neuronal oscillations. Besides, the structure of the filter-bank allows for efficiently tracking multiple frequency components perturbed by noise, therefore providing a good framework for EEG spe

Purpose: Distinguishing persistent from permanent atrial fibrillation (AF) in a reliable way would improve AF patient management, as cardioversion options could be considered appropriately. In this study, complexity measures based on the combined analysis ...

In pacing-induced models of atrial fibrillation (AF) that mimic atrial high-frequency foci, the increase in AF susceptibility over time is not paralleled by any increase in dispersion of repolarization (DOR). Measurements of effective refractory periods (ERP), however, were performed by using a single extra stimulus, which bears significant limitation because it cannot evaluate any dynamic increase in DOR that may arise at rapid heart rates. Repolarization alternans (Re-ALT), a beat-to-beat alternation in a

Kinetics of Atrial Repolarization Alternans. Introduction: Repolarization alternans (Re-ALT), a beat-to-beat alternation in action potential repolarization, promotes dispersion of repolarization, wavebreaks, and reentry. Recently, Re-ALT has been shown to ...
