Progress in photodynamic therapy (PDT) depends on the development of: (1) photosensitizers, (2) optical devices among which are lasers and light delivery systems, and (3) clinical procedure. The light delivery systems which are the focus of this article are fiberoptic devices developed in Lausanne, Switzerland for use in the endoscopic treatment of cancer or precancerous lesions in the bronchi, the esophagus, the uterus, the cervix, the upper aerodigestive tract and thoracic cavity. Light delivery systems f

Benzoporphyrin deriv. monoacid ring A [BPD-MA (I)], a chlorin-type mol., is a new photosensitizer currently in phase II clin. trials for the treatment by photodynamic therapy of cancerous lesions, psoriasis and pathol. neovascularization. The photochem. (t ...

The rate of photolytic laser chem. vapor deposition (LCVD) of Pt from its bishexafluoroacetylacetonate precursor is measured as a function of the light intensity, the wavelength, the precursor pressure, and the laser beam diam. at the surface. The wavelength dependence of the deposition rate indicates that the photodissocn. yield does not depend only on the absorption coeff. of the precursor, but may differ from one absorption band to another. This is indicative of the different photophys. processes assocd.

Combining photodynamic therapy (PDT) using verteporfin (Visudyne(R)) with ranibizumab (Lucentis(R)) can optimize the overall treatment outcome by providing more efficacy in vessel closure, and thus reduce the need for retreatment in patients with wet age-r ...

The kinetics and mechanism of the title heterogeneous halogen exchange reactions of potential atmospheric importance have been studied under molecular flow conditions in a FEP Teflon-coated Knudsen flow reactor on HX (X = Cl, Br, I) - doped ice condensed from the vapor phase under conditions of several formal monolayers of HX coverage at approximately 200 K. In addition, the halogen exchange reactions involving the expected primary reaction products BrCl, ICl and IBr of the above mixed anhydrides with HX-do

In view of the uncertainty of the origin of the secular increase of N2O, we studied heterogeneous processes that contribute to formation of N2O in an environment that comes as close as possible to exhaust conditions contg. NO and SO2, among other constituents. The N2O formation was followed using electron capture gas chromatog. (ECD-GC). The other reactants and intermediates (SO2, NO, NO2 and HONO) were monitored using gas phase UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy. Expts. were conducted at 298 and 368 K as well

The kinetics of condensation of D218O water vapor on D216O ice was studied in the temp. range 140-220 K. The measurements have been performed in real time using the pulsed valve technique in a low-pressure flow reactor. Ice samples were prepd. by several different methods. The uptake coeff. (g) was obsd. to decrease with increasing surface temp., and varied from g = 0.06 to 0.8. A significant dependence of g on the method of prepn. of the ice has been found. At 180 K, g = 0.13 for single-crystal ice, 0.18 f

The Grenoble metropolitan area located in the French Alps with more than 400 thousand inhabitants suffers from periods of high ozone (O3) concentrations in summertime. Grenoble is moreover located in the Y shaped convergence of three deep valleys with surrounding mountains up to 3 000 m above sea level (asl) leading to a very complex wind pattern. During summer 1999, a major field campaign GRENOble PHOTochemistry (GRENOPHOT) involving standard ground based stations, LIDAR, aircraft, DOAS, microwave windprof

The characteristics of the binding reaction of surfactant-cobalt(III) complex, cis-[Co(phen)(2)(C14H29NH2)]Cl-2 center dot 3H(2)O (phen =1,10-phenanthroline, C14H29NH2 = tetradecylamine) with human serum albumin (HSA) were studied by fluorescence and UV-vi ...

A new lidar instrument was developed to measure tropospheric ozone and water vapor at low altitude. The lidar uses Raman scattering of an UV beam from atm. nitrogen, oxygen, and water vapor to retrieve ozone and water-vapor vertical profiles. By numerical simulation the authors study the sensitivity of the method to both atm. and device perturbations. The aerosol optical effect in the planetary boundary layer, ozone interference in water-vapor retrieval, statistical error, optical cross talk between Raman-s

A non-invasive probe has been devised and clinically used to perform in vivo measurements of the optical properties of the esophageal wall and oral cavity. The absorption and reduced scattering coefficients are determined from the observation of the spatial distribution of the diffuse reflectance at the tissue surface under a narrow beam illumination of the tissue. The determination of these two coefficients enables us to evaluate the value of the effective attenuation coefficient which is of major interest

Multidrug resistance (MDR) remains a primary hindrance to curative cancer therapy. Thus, introduction of novel strategies to overcome MDR is of paramount therapeutic significance. Sequestration of chemotherapeutics in lysosomes is an established mechanism ...

A major key to improvement of cancer therapy is the combination of drugs. Mixing drugs that already exist on the market may offer an attractive alternative. Here we report on a new model-based streamlined feedback system control (s-FSC) method, based on a ...

Exogenous administration of 5-aminolaevulinic acid (ALA) is becoming widely used to enhance the endogenous synthesis of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) in photodynamic therapy (PDT) and fluorescence photodetection (PD). Recently, results have shown that the chemi ...

The purpose of this review is to compile preclinical and clinical results on phthalocyanines (Pcs) as photosensitizers (PS) for Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) and contrast agents for fluorescence imaging. Indeed, Pcs are excellent candidates in these fields du ...

We investigated the anti-angiogenic properties of GNX-686, a newly identified maleimide-based small molecule. In vitro studies on HUVEC showed that GNX-686 inhibited cell growth with an ED50 of 20-25 mu M, while human HeLa tumor cells and non-transformed e ...

The chicken embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) is widely used as an in vivo model to study the vascular effects of angiogenesis modulating agents. The main goal of the present study was to develop and validate a quantitative method to characterize time- ...

The reaction I2M + hn -> I2(B,v',j') + M (M = rare gas atom) was studied exptl. for excitation above the dissocn. limit of the I2M B state. A surprisingly large amt. of the available energy is found as relative translational energy of the I2 and M products. These results were interpreted in terms of a one atom cage effect, where the I atoms are prevented from dissocg. by the presence of M. A purely kinematic cage effect could occur on a single electronically excited potential energy surface, namely the one
