Cathepsin B is a lysosomal cysteine protease that plays an important role in cancer, atherosclerosis, and other inflammatory diseases. The suppression of cathepsin B can inhibit tumor growth. The overexpression of cathepsin B can be used for the imaging an ...

The efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) alone was evaluated on 41 ‘early’ squamous cell carcinomas of the pharynx (10), oesophagus (15) and tracheo-bronchial tree (16). All lesions but two were synchronous second primaries in ENT-patients suffering from ...

The concentration of oxygen and its rate of consumption are important factors in certain medical treatments, such as radiotherapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Measuring the tissue concentration of oxygen or its partial pressure (pO2) can be achieved by ...

Clinical studies provide overwhelming evidence for the importance of proteolytic imbalance and the upregulation of diverse protease classes in diseases such as cancer and arthritis. While the complex nature of proteolytic networks has hampered the developm ...

Protease-sensitive macromolecular prodrugs have attracted interest for bio-responsive drug delivery to sites with up-regulated proteolytic activities such as inflammatory or cancerous lesions. Here we report the development of a novel polymeric photosensit ...

We describe a protocol for the discovery of synergistic drug combinations for the treatment of disease. Synergistic drug combinations lead to the use of drugs at lower doses, which reduces side effects and can potentially lead to reduced drug resistance, w ...

Drug combinations can improve angiostatic cancer treatment efficacy and enable the reduction of side effects and drug resistance. Combining drugs is non-trivial due to the high number of possibilities. We applied a feedback system control (FSC) technique w ...

Kinetic measurements have been made on the gas-phase reaction N2O4 + M .dblharw. 2NO2 + M by applying the temp.-jump relaxation method. Equil. mixts. contg. NO2, N2O4, a small quantity of an IR absorber, and an excess of a third-body bath gas, have been subjected to a short CO2 laser pulse. The induced temp. jump, of the order of 1 K, displaces the equil. towards NO2 formation. After the fast heating of the mixt., the time dependence of the NO2 and N2O4 concns. has been monitored at 420 and 250 nm, resp. Fo

A fluorescence imaging device applied to the detection of early cancer is described. The app. is based on the imaging of laser-induced fluorescence of a dye that localizes in a tumor with a higher concn. than in the surrounding normal tissue after i.v. inj ...

We are developing an imaging system to detect pre-/early cancers in the tracheo-bronchial tree. Autofluorescence might be useful but many features remain suboptimal. We have studied the autofluorescence of human healthy, metaplastic and dysplastic/CIS bron ...

The pharmacokinetics of the photosensitizer used play a key role in the understanding of the mechanism of photodynamic therapy-induced damage. Fluorescence microscopy was used to compare time-dependent biodistribution of tetra(m-hydroxyphenyl)chlorin (mTHP ...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) for cancer in the esophagus and bronchi with red (630 nm) light may occasionally lead to wall perforation and fistula. Therefore, the clin. use of a less penetrating wavelength (514 nm) was investigated for the curative treatment ...

A new optical-fiber-based spectrofluorometer for in vivo or in vitro detection of delayed fluorescence is presented and characterized. This compact setup is designed so that it can be readily adapted for future clinical use. Optical excitation is done with ...

The aim of the present study was to monitor photodynamic angioocclusion with verteporfin in capillaries. Details of this process were recorded under a microscope in real-time using a high-sensitivity video camera. A procedure was developed based on intrave ...

The use of dyes has been helpful for the photodiagnosis of small cancers accessible to endoscopic examn. An important limiting factor of this technol. is that the presently used fluorescent dye mixt. has a relatively poor capacity to accumulate preferentia ...

Two versions of the Emission Inventory (EI) are generated for the city of Bogota, Colombia. In the first version (EI-1), CORINAIR traffic emission factors (EFs) are used. In the second (EI-2), bulk traffic EF's calculated for the city, using in situ measur ...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with Foscan (mTHPC) is used to cure early cancers of the esophagus or the tracheobronchial tree. However, fixed PDT parameters (drug dose, light dose, etc.) do not permit an accurate prediction of the tissue damage. Large interpa ...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an efficient technique to treat superficial early cancers in the pharynx, esophagus, and tracheo-bronchial tree. However, the lack of selectivity of some of the clinically used photosensitizers can re ...

We describe the design and performance tested during six years of clinical trials of a fluorescence endoscope for the detection and delineation of cancers in several hollow organs. The apparatus is based on the imaging of the laser-induced fluorescence tha ...

Objective: To clinically evaluate a new photosensitizer, m- tetra(hydroxyphenyl) chlorin (m-THPC), for the photodynamic therapy of early squamous cell carcinomas of the upper aerodigestive tract. Design: Phase 1 included evaluation of the innocuousness of ...
