Papaioannou TG, Vardoulis O, Stergiopulos N. The "systolic volume balance" method for the noninvasive estimation of cardiac output based on pressure wave analysis. Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol 302: H2064-H2073, 2012. First published March 16, 2012; doi: ...

Subjects with amputation of the lower limbs are at increased risk of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. We hypothesize that amputation-induced alterations in the arterial tree negatively impact arterial biomechanics, blood pressure and flow behavior. ...

Goal: We introduce a novel approach to estimate cardiac output (CO) and central systolic blood pressure (cSBP) from noninvasive measurements of peripheral cuff-pressure and carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV). Methods: The adjustment of a previ ...

Reymond P, Bohraus Y, Perren F, Lazeyras F, Stergiopulos N. Validation of a patient-specific one-dimensional model of the systemic arterial tree. Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol 301: H1173-H1182, 2011. First published May 27, 2011; doi:10.1152/ajpheart.008 ...

Background: Cardiac output is essential for patient management in critically ill patients. The state-of-the-art for cardiac output monitoring bears limitations that pertain to the invasive nature of the method, high costs, and associated complications. Hen ...

Despite significant advances in the treatment of thrombogenic diseases, antiplatelet therapies are still associated with a high bleeding risk. Consequently, potential benefits of preventing thromboembolic events by pharmacological agents need to be balance ...

Despite significant advances in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, antiplatelet therapies are still associated with a high risk of hemorrhage. In order to develop new drugs, methods to measure platelet function must be adapted for the high-throughpu ...

Introduction: Alterations of wall shear stress can predispose the endothelium to the development of atherosclerotic plaques. Ample evidence indicates that arginase expression and/or activity correlates with several risk factors for cardiovascular disease i ...

BackgroundAbdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a complex degenerative disease, which leads to morbidity and mortality in a large portion of the elderly population. Current treatment options for AAA are quite limited as there is no proven indication for pharm ...

Aortic compliance is an important determinant of cardiac afterload and a contributor to cardiovascular morbidity. In the present study, we sought to provide in silico insights into the acute as well as long-term effects of aortic compliance decrease on cen ...

The pulmonary venous systolic flow wave has been attributed both to left heart phenomena, such as left atrial relaxation and descent of the mitral annulus, and to propagation of the pulmonary artery pressure pulse through the pulmonary bed from the right ventricle. In this study we hypothesized that all waves in the pulmonary veins originate in the left heart, and that the gross wave features observed in measurements can be explained simply by wave propagation and reflection. A mathematical model of the pul

Synchrotron-based x-ray phase-contrast imaging allows for detailed 3D insight into the microstructure of soft tissue and is increasingly used to improve our understanding of mouse models of cardiovascular disease. Two techniques dominate the field: grating ...

Intracranial aneurysms may be treated by flow diverters, alternatively to stents and coils combination. Numerical simulation allows the assessment of the complex nature of aneurismal flow. Endovascular devices present a rather dense and fine strut network, ...

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the gold standard treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. However, the physiologic impact of CPAP on cerebral blood flow (CBF) is not well established. Ultrasound can be used to estimate CBF, but there is no wid ...

Objective Plaque-prone areas are exposed to a particular hemodynamic environment characterized by a low mean shear stress value and a cyclic reversal flow. This mechanical environment, also termed oscillatory shear stress (OSS), induces the expression of s ...

Objective: Local pulse wave velocity (PWV) can be estimated from the waterhammer equation and is an essential component of wave separation analysis. However, previous studies have demonstrated inaccuracies in the estimations of local PWV due to the presenc ...

Stroke volume (SV) is a major biomarker of cardiac function, reflecting ventricular-vascular coupling. Despite this, hemodynamic monitoring and management seldomly includes assessments of SV and remains predominantly guided by brachial cuff blood pressure ...

The passive biomechanical behavior of blood vessels is generally modeled by a parallel arrangement of elastin and collagen, with collagen recruitment depending on vessel strain. We experimentally determined the collagen recruitment distribution using confo ...

Experimental data from animal models and clinical studies support connections between the haemostasis and inflammation in atherogenesis. These interfaces among inflammation and thrombogenesis have been suggested as targets for pharmacological intervention ...

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a widely emerging method to assess vascular health in humans. The origins of the signal of reflective PPG on peripheral arteries have not been thoroughly investigated. We aimed to identify and quantify the optical and biomecha ...
