Information regarding occupants inside buildings has the potential to improve security, energy management, and caregiving. Typical sensing approaches for occupant localization rely on mobile devices and cameras. These systems compromise privacy. Occupant l ...

This paper presents an experimental validation of a new design method for adaptive structures that counteract the effect of loading through shape morphing. The structure is designed to morph into target shapes that are optimal to take external loads throug ...

Adaptive structures have the ability to modify their shape and internal forces through sensing and actuation in order to maintain optimal performance under changing actions. Previous studies have shown that substantial whole-life energy savings with respec ...

Tensegrities are spatial, reticulated and lightweight structures that are increasingly investigated as structural solutions for active and deployable structures. Tensegrity systems are composed only of axially loaded elements and this provides opportunitie ...

Accurate measurement-data interpretation leads to increased understanding of structural behavior and enhanced asset-management decision making. In this paper, four data-interpretation methodologies, residual minimization, traditional Bayesian model updatin ...

This paper reports on experimental testing that was carried out on a prototype adaptive structure designed to counteract the effect of loading through controlled large shape changes. The prototype is 6.6 m truss equipped with 12 linear actuators which has ...

Information collected through sensor measurements has the potential to improve knowledge of complex-system behavior, leading to better decisions related to system management. In this situation, and particularly when using digital twins, the quality of sens ...

Structural health monitoring (SHM) has the potential to provide quantitative and reliable data on the real condition of structures, observe the evolution of their behaviour and detect degradation This paper presents two methodologies for model-free data in ...

Sensor-based occupant tracking has the potential to enhance knowledge of the utilization of buildings. Occupancy-tracking strategies using footstep-induced floor vibrations may be beneficial for thermal-load prediction, security enhancement, and care-givin ...

With increasing urbanization and depleting reserves of raw materials for construction, sustainable management of existing infrastructure will be an important challenge in this century. Structural sensing has the potential to increase knowledge of infrastru ...

Engineers often decide to measure structures upon signs of damage to determine its extent and its location. Measurement locations, sensor types and numbers of sensors are selected based on judgment and experience. Rational and systematic methods for evalua ...

Occupant detection and recognition support functional goals such as security, healthcare, and energy management in buildings. Typical sensing approaches, such as smartphones and cameras, undermine the privacy of building occupants and inherently affect the ...

This paper presents an approach for model identifiability that builds upon recent research into measurement data interpretation. The objective of this approach is to determine probabilistically to what degree the number of models able to explain a measured behaviour can be reduced in comparison to the initial solution space. The procedure is intended to be used prior to obtaining measurements from full-scale testing. The new methodology evaluates the probability of occurrence of two performance indices; the

This paper presents a methodology for reducing the uncertainty related to the structural behaviour of an existing building in view of a vulnerability assessment regarding future earthquake actions. Estimating the lateral load resistance is a step towards e ...

Tensegrity structures are spatial systems that are composed of tension and compression components in a self-equilibrated prestress stable state. Although tensegrity systems were first introduced in 1950s, few examples have been used for civil engineering purposes. In this paper, tensegrity-ring modules are used for a deployable pedestrian bridge. Ring modules belong to a special family of tensegrity systems composed of a single strut circuit. Assembled in a “hollow-rope” structure, ring modules were shown t

In sensed buildings, information related to occupant movement helps optimize important func-tionalities such as caregiving, energy management, and security enhancement. Typical sensing approaches for occupant tracking rely on mobile devices and cameras. Th ...

Structures can be better understood when measurement data are used to improve the modeling of structural behavior. Our capacity to interpret data depends on aspects such as the choice of model class, model parameters (and their range of possible values), a ...

In vibration-based structural health monitoring, changes in the natural frequency of a structure are used to identify changes in the structural conditions due to damage and deterioration. However, natural frequency values also vary with changes in environm ...

Current infrastructure is designed and built such that it must simultaneously comply with all possible loads. This leads to overdesigned structures that are inefficient in terms energy and cost. A structure that can self-identify damage, adapt, and learn for future events addresses the emerging field of intelligent infrastructure through inspiration from biology. The required material and embodied energy of structural elements is reduced while maintaining structural integrity with a small increase in operat
