Advanced optical ray tracing software, CFSpro, was developed for the study and optimization of complex fenestration systems (CFSs). Using an algorithm mixing 2D and 3D approaches, accurate computation of large numbers of rays in extruded geometries can be ...

Traditional tools in the domains of thermal design and control of building systems usually rely on a deterministic approach. Building systems, on the other hand, are strongly influenced by meteorological variables, which obviousy are characterized by a stochastic nature. Due to this mismatch, traditional tools can neither evaluated properly the fluctuations of the solar and heat load intensities for design puroposes, nor anticipate their stochastic behavior to optimize the thermal control of building system

To assess the daylighting performances of a building, one of the most commonly used quantities is the Daylight factor, which is defined for a given surface element inside the analysed room as the ratio of the inside and outside illuminances under a CIE overcast sky. The Daylight factor consists of three components: the sky component, due to light flux reaching the surface element directly from the sky, the externally and the internally reflected components, respectively due to light flux reflected on extern

The precise daylighting simulation in buildings can potentially contribute to designers’ and occupants’ smart utilization of it. The traditional method of employing sky models was indicated with noticeable errors in transient lighting simulation for comple ...

Resolving the wind profile in an urban canyon environment means dealing with the turbulent nature of the stream and the presence of non-negligible flux exchanges with the atmosphere inside the canopy, making any deterministic model solution computationally ...

A paradigm change in energy system design tools, energy market, and energy policy is required to attain the target levels in renewable energy integration and in minimizing pollutant emissions in power generation. Integrating non-dispatchable renewable ener ...

The total population of the United Kingdom is expected to increase from 63 million in 2011 to 73 million people in 2037. This is an increase by 16% in 26 years, which puts the urban infrastructure, particularly the transportation infrastructure, under grea ...

This paper focuses on roof-shape classification and solar potential for integrating photovoltaics (PV) on roofs. A machine-learning approach, Support Vector Machine (SVM), is used to classify the roof shapes in the city of Geneva. The impact of various roo ...

The integration of renewable energy in the built environment, improving the energy efficiency of buildings, and optimizing distributed energy systems are three interconnected activities that are central for the transition to sustainable cities. Here, a met ...

Electric lighting is responsible for a significant fraction of electricity consumption within non-residential buildings. Making daylight more available in office and commercial buildings can lead as a consequence to important electricity savings, as well as to the improvement of occupants' visual performance and wellbeing. Over the last decades, daylighting technologies have been developed for that purpose, some of them having proven to be highly efficient such as anidolic daylighting systems. Based on non-

A measurement campaign was set up in Lausanne. The objective of this study is to define the importance of using local meteorological variables in the design of urban spaces and in the evaluation of building energy use. Urban simulation tools typically use ...

Complex Fenestration Systems (CFS) are widely studied to help redirecting daylight into a room in order to optimise its luminous properties. Daylighting designers and researchers usually employ physical and virtual models to assess their daylighting perfor ...

Several contrasting effects are reported in the existing literature concerning the impact assessment of the COVID19 outbreak on the use of energy in buildings. Following an in-depth literature review, we here propose a GISbased approach, based on pre-pande ...

The integration of renewable energy technologies in the existing energy infrastructure plays a key role in improving the sustainability of cities. Due to the stochastic nature of some renewable energy sources, primarily wind and solar energy, direct integr ...

The concept of Energy Hub (EH) is getting popular as a method to integrate non-dispatchable energy sources at building and neighbourhood scale with the support of energy storage and grid. It is interesting to study the effectiveness of EH concept to integr ...

The combined integration of daylighting and electric lighting systems within buildings --also designated by the term “Green lighting”, which is a recent issue for the lighting research community-- allows achieving better lighting conditions for building oc ...

The spatio-temporal patterns of the existing rooftop photovoltaic (PV) production can provide valuable insights for the design of effective strategies for PV integration at large scale. In this work, we quantify the hourly production of existing rooftop PV ...

Among the main challenges of our century, the climate change and the need of diversification of the energy sources are of most importance. Renewable energies undoubtedly have an important role to play, photovoltaic (PV) electricity being especially well suited to face these energy challenges. However, the current integration of PV panels often comes without architectural consideration. In this context, the Archinsolar project [1] aims to develop a new generation of photovoltaic elements based on silicon thi

Overheating is a problem with the use of active/passive solar energy in thermal solar energy systems. A solution to these problems might be provided by a thermochromic material such as vanadium dioxide. In order to simulate the optical behaviour of multilayered coatings, knowledge on its optical properties is necessary. We determined point-by-point the dielectric function for VO2:W by ellipsometry. For validation, the solar spectra were measured by spectrophotometry. Such data have been compared with the co

An accurate evaluation of daylight distribution through advanced fenestration systems (complex glazing, solar shading systems) requires the knowledge of their Bidirectional light Transmission (Reflection) Distribution Function BT(R)DF. An innovative equipm ...
