The very shallow geothermal potential (vSGP) is increasingly recognized as a viable resource for providing clean thermal energy in urban and rural areas. This is primarily due to its reliability, low-cost installation, easy maintenance, and little constrai ...

In this work, we study MgF2 thin-film synthesis by reactive pulsed DC magnetron sputtering from a metallic magnesium target in a gas mixture of argon, oxygen, and carbon tetrafluoride (CF4). Nanocrystalline films on silicon and glass substrates with excell ...

Various aspects of the built environment have important effects on ecology. Providing suitable metrics for the built forms so as to quantify and model their internal relations and external ecological footprints, however, remains a challenge. Here we provid ...

Grid connected renewable energy systems are becoming popular due to reasons such as rapid escalation of energy prices, depletion of fossil fuel resources and pollutant emitted by conventional energy sources. Therefore, technologies for incorporating renewa ...

In order to face the climate change and to improve the sustainability of our cities, architects and urban planners focus on an efficient urban design, improving the energy fluxes within the built environment. But frequently, due to the complexity of the urban metabolism, the impact of the buildings on the urban climatic conditions, as well as on the outdoor thermal and visual conditions is left behind. Indeed, several famous buildings, due to their form and reflectivity, are examples for the uncomfortable c

One promising application of semiconductor nanostructures in the field of photovoltaics might be quantum dot solar concentrators. Quantum dot containing nanocomposite thin films are synthesized at EPFL-LESO by a low cost sol-gel process. In order to study ...

Optimal shading control can improve occupants’ visual comfort and increase energy savings on artificial lighting and cooling loads during warm seasons. A highly integrated automated shading system is presented in this paper. Designed to regulate daylightin ...

Shallow ground-source heat pumps (GSHPs) are a promising technology for contributing to the decarbonisation of the energy sector. In heating-dominated climates, the combined use of GSHPs for both heating and cooling increases their technical potential, def ...

Solar photovoltaic (PV) deployment on existing building roof-tops has proven to be one of the most viable large scale resources of sustainable energy for urban areas. While there have been many studies on roof-top integrated PV systems at building and neighborhood scale, estimating the PV energy potential through the available roof surface area in large scale, however, remains a challenge. This study proposes a methodology to estimate the roof-top solar PV potential for existing buildings at the commune lev

To describe complex fenestration systems such as novel solar blinds, new glazing or coating materials, daylight and sunlight-redirecting devices, a detailed description of their optical properties is needed, given by their Bidirectional Transmission (or Re ...

Urban Green Infrastructures (UGI) play a major role in mitigating the urban climatic conditions, as well as improving people’s health and wellbeing. Indeed, nature has a positive impact both on the pedestrian thermal and psychological perception, increasing productivity and creativity due to their restorative properties. Additionally, UGI mitigate the urban climatic conditions, reducing the energy demand of buildings and affecting the energy systems. The objective of this work is to develop a digital platfo

Design optimization of distributed energy systems has become an interest of a wider group of researchers due the capability of these systems to integrate non-dispatchable renewable energy technologies such as solar PV and wind. White box models, using line ...

This study evaluates the potential of supervised and transfer learning techniques to assist energy system optimization. A surrogate model is developed with the support of a supervised learning technique (by using artificial neural network) in order to bypa ...

Following the increased consciousness regarding global warming and other environmental issues, there is a growing urge in cities for a more rational energy supply and use in buildings. In parallel, the range of possible actions has broaden, from building refurbishment and construction options, through local energy production (solar panels, heat pumps) to the larger scale re-use of waste heat, green electricity production or trading. This evolution has increased the complexity of urban energy management, and

Different climates may need different design strategies for optimal thermal performance of buildings: the relationship between different texture of the cities (their form and morphology), the energy demand of buildings and the outdoor microclimate are esse ...

Integration of non-dispatchable renewable energy sources such as wind and solar into the grid is challenging due to the stochastic nature of energy sources. Hence, electrical hubs (EH) and virtual power plants that combine non-dispatchable energy sources, ...

A detailed knowledge of the light distribution characteristics through advanced window systems is required to improve the visual comfort of the building's occupants while controlling the propagation of daylight in rooms and the solar gains. An innovative b ...

Due to climate change and the need to decrease the carbon footprint of urban areas, there is an increasing pressure to integrate renewable energy and other components in urban energy systems. Most of the models or available tools do not provide both an eco ...

Glass is a central element to modern architecture and can cover up to 100% of a building façade. The main purpose of large glazed areas is to create bright, comfortable and healthy spaces. It was shown that increasing natural light in offices reduces sickn ...

The energy efficiency of production processes for components of solar energy systems is an important issue. Other factors, which are important for the production of black selective solar coatings include production speed, cycle time and homogeneity of the ...
