Thermal comfort depends on heat exchanges of the body by conduction evapo-transpiration and convection to the air, and radiation to and from surrounding surfaces. Usual ways of sizing heating and cooling systems are based on homogeneous temperature in the ...

Ventilation systems often host bacteria and fungi that may be dangerous for the health of exposed people. Essential oils are one means among others to prevent microbial development. Used as a basis for many traditional therapies, these odorant plant extrac ...

One of the aims of the HOPE project is to develop a method to assess healthiness and energy efficiency of buildings and strategies to optimise their performance towards health and energy efficiency. In this project, a building is defined "Healthy and Energ ...

In order to comply with sustainable development policy, the minimum that buildings should achieve are a healthy, comfortable and energy-efficient environment. Criteria for individually assessing each of the many criteria are known: the occupant's perceived ...

This study compares the characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and the associated factors affecting them within European (EU) and Singapore buildings. Generally, concentrations of target VOCs determined in the two types of buildings were with ...

The Swiss Minergie®-standard is, by the number of labelled buildings (> 20'000) one of the most successful building energy labels in the world. It is obviously a strong incentive for designing comfortable, low energy buildings. This standard is now valid for temperate - cold climates only. There is therefore a need for a similar standard for buildings dominated by cooling loads, as it is common in the tropical and sub-tropical climates of the world. Since the new EPFL campus planned in Ras al Kaimah (United

The main air and contaminant flow paths or the spatial distribution of the age of air (or contaminant) in a room are of great interest to estimate the ventilation efficiency performance. A simple measurement method is presented, which consists to inject or more tracer gases at locations of interest and to analyze the concentration at several other locations, carefully chosen for best accuracy. Response functions can be fitted on these measurements, which are the age of the tracers or of the air or the conce

Methods to measure airflow rates using tracer gas in single air handling units are well known. In some buildings however, in particular in Singapore, rooms are often ventilated with two or more units and present large recirculation rates. Large recirculati ...

In order to cope with sustainable development policy, buildings should be at least healthy, comfortable and energy efficient. Criteria for assessing individually the occupant's perceived health, the provided thermal, visual, acoustical comfort, the indoor ...

In this work, we studied the thermal behavior of mono or multilayer walls of various compositions consisting of traditional and modern building materials, in order to identify those that provide good comfort and better energy conservation in conditioning c ...

Background: Environmental conditions play a crucial role in mite growth, and optimal environmental control is key in the prevention of airway inflammation in chronic allergic rhinoconjunctivitis or asthma. ...

Within the European research project HOPE, 97 apartment buildings and 67 office buildings - a large part of which designed to be energy-efficient - were investigated using checklists regarding building characteristics and guestionnaires addressed to the oc ...

The Swiss Federal Office of Energy has published directives in order to limit the increase of electrical energy consumption to a maximum of 5% in 2010 in comparison with 2000. To reach this goal, clear measures have to be taken regarding the installation a ...

The EU project HOPE (Health Optimisation Protocol for Energy-efficient buildings) seeks to characterise those buildings that achieve good performance in both energy efficiency and occupant health and comfort. This project involved two stages of fieldwork: ...

Within the European research project Health Optimisation Protocol for Energy-efficient Building (HOPE), 96 apartment buildings and 64 office buildings (of which approximately 75% have been designed to be energy-efficient) were investigated. The building ch ...

Within the European research project HOPE, 97 apartmentbuildings and 67 office buildings were investigated using checklists addressing the building characteristics and self-administered questionnaires to the occupants asking their perceived comfort (therma ...

The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) requires EU member states to establish a methodology for calculating the energy performance of buildings within a framework that includes the effect of active and passive solar systems as well as other c ...

Within the European research project HOPE, 97 apartment buildings and 67 office buildings - of which approximately 75% have been designed to be energy-efficient, and half of them are indeed - were investigated using checklists addressing the building chara ...

Airflow rates, hence energy consumption, are directly affected by the amount of open area and consequently by the inhabitant behavior with respect to window opening. This report describes stochastic models using Markov chains, and used to generate time series of window and door openings or window opening angles. It is based on data measured on one hand at he LESO and on the other hand by the TNO Delft on 80 identical, 16 openings dwellings located at Schiedam (NL). The models are validated by a comparison o
