The concern for sustainable development issues together with the new EU promotion policies are finally leading to a widespread use of Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal systems in buildings. This upcoming reality is opening a new debate on the urban/architectu ...

Many daylighting applications require a precise knowledge of the directional transmission features of advanced fenestration materials. These photometric properties are described by a bi-directional transmission distribution function (BTDF), whose experimental assessment requires an appropriate equipment. A novel bi-directional photogoniometer, based on digital imaging techniques, has been designed and developed for that purpose. The main advantages of this device are the significant reduction of the time re

A survey has been conducted as part of the European project SOLABS (unglazed coloured solar absorbers for building facades) to provide the design team with a set of formal design guidelines. Targeted mainly at European architects of the three climatic regi ...

Many daylighting applications require a precise knowledge of the transmission properties of fenestration materials, called bi-directional transmission distribution functions (BTDF), which necessitate systematic and accurate measurements. A new type of bi-directional photogoniometer, based on advanced imaging techniques, has been developed to this end; its mechanical concept, the calibration procedures and the first results are presented here.

Solar thermal systems are becoming a mandatory part of the future “energy in buildings” landscape, as demonstrated by the numerous national promotion programs and new compulsory solar fractions regulations. Considering their size at the building envelope scale, these systems have a major impact on the whole building architecture.

In the perspective of setting ambitious targets for new buildings energy performance and of introducing new approaches to retrofit existing buildings, the implementation of solar thermal collectors into façade becomes very interesting Several research acti ...

The integration of PV modules into platform canopies has several advantages: - Very large areas are available and just waiting to be used - These areas are nationally owned - There is maintenance personnel on-site - The areas are exposed to the view of numerous railway customers and have thus a promotional effect. But every rose has its thorn and in this particular case, the following problems have to be considered: - Local pollution - Electromagnetic perturbation - Shading from cables and supports. The pre

Architectural integration is a major issue in the development and spreading of solar thermal technologies. Yet the architectural quality of most existing building integrated solar thermal systems (BIST) is quite poor, which often discourages potential new ...

Multilayered inteference filters of dielectric thin films have been designed for the application as energy-efficient coloration of collector cover glasses. The optical behavior of the designed multilayers is analyzed by computer simulations yielding the CI ...

One main obstacle to facade integration of solar thermal collectors lies in the formal characteristics and low flexibility of available products. Major problems are the black and irregular appearance of their absorbers, their low dimensional flexibility an ...

Nanoporous SiO2 and nanocomposite MgF2:SiO2 coatings have been deposited by sol gel dip-coating in a particle-free atmosphere. The refractive index of the prepared nanostructured thin films is determined from spectrophotometric data. In both cases, signifi ...

This document is addressed to manufacturers of solar thermal systems. It describes the main criteria for a successful integration of solar thermal systems in buildings and proposes a methodology for the design of systems specifically conceived for building integration. For each specific sub-technology, it provides a comprehensive set of practical recommendations that should lead to the production of new systems appealing to architects.

The paper presents selected results of an investigation over possible ways to improve Building Integrated Solar Thermal systems (BIST) on the formal level. It shows the results of a European survey intended to help defining quality in the architectural int ...

Urban areas are facing a growing deployment of solar technologies on the built exposed surfaces such as roofs and façades. This transformation often occurs without consideration of the needed architectural quality, which depends on the context sensitivity ...

Prize of Sustainable Development
