As for most of the topics in the field of solidification, Mert Flemings has always pioneered new ideas. While much of the understanding of hot tearing formation was already known about 30 years ago, he devised with Metz an interesting apparatus for studying the resistance of mushy zones to compression and shearing [1,2]. Part of the results of these tests lead Flemings to become interested in semi-solid processing of metallic alloys, with the success we know today (e.g., production of automobile components

Although the grain refinement of yellow gold alloys with Jr has been used in industry and known for nearly half a century, the basic mechanism is still unknown. The present contribution shows that the mechanism is the same as that evidenced recently in Al- ...

A coupled hydromechanical granular model aimed at predicting hot tear formation and stress-strain behavior in metallic alloys during solidification is applied to the semicontinuous direct chill casting of aluminum alloy round billets. This granular model c ...

Twinned dendrites appearing in an Al-26 wt pct Zn alloy have been quenched during growth using a specifically designed setup that is positioned on top of a directional solidification experiment. X-ray tomography performed at the Swiss Light Source (SLS-bea ...

It has been discovered quite recently that Icosahedral Short-Range Order (ISRO) of atoms in the liquid phase of metallic alloys surrounding some trace elements added to the melt can influence both the nucleation and growth of the primary phase. In this wor ...

A 3D phase-field (PhF) model has been developed to study the formation of micropores constrained to grow within a well-developed solid network. The model accounts for the equilibrium condition at triple (solid-liquid-pore) lines and the partitioning of dis ...

Recently, Gonzales and Rappaz [Met. Mat. Trans. A37:2797, 2006] showed the influence of an increasing zinc content on the growth directions of aluminum dendrites. < 100 > and < 110 > dendrites were observed below 25wt.% and above 55wt.% zinc, respectively, ...

Computational and experimental demonstration of dendritic crystal growth direction and the morphologic diversity of the resulting dendritic structures are discussed. The primary dendrite growth directions can vary continuously between different crystallogr ...

Hot-dip galvanized Zn-0.2wt%Al coatings on steel sheets exhibit a strong basal texture ({0001} parallel to the sheet plane). Part of this texture call be explained by the faster growth of < 10 (1) over bar0 > dendrites as compared with < 0001 >, granting b ...

In jewelry manufacturing, joining dissimilar materials is usually achieved by soldering or brazing, but these techniques have several disadvantages as compared for example with laser welding. In this last case, however, it is necessary to have a thorough u ...

The aim of this paper is to report the very first in situ observations of the deformation behaviour of an Al-Cu alloy in the semisolid state by using ultrafast, high-resolution X-ray microtomography. It is shown that this deformation is non-homogeneous and ...

Hot tearing, one of the most severe defects observed in castings, is due to both tensile stresses and lack of interdendritic liquid feeding in the mushy zone. In order to predict this phenomenon, the two-phase averaged conservation equations for mass and m ...

In Part I of this article, the role of the Zn content in the development of solidification microstructures in Al-Zn alloys was investigated experimentally using X-ray tomographic microscopy. The transition region between dendrites found at low Zn content a ...

short communication ...

Under certain thermal conditions (G approximate to 1 x 10(4) K/m, v(s) approximate to 1 x 10(-3) m/s), < 1 1 0 > twinned dendrites appear in aluminum alloys and can overgrow regular columnar dendrites, provided that some convection is also present in the m ...

Rapid solidification of Al-Cu droplets of eutectic composition was carried out using Impulse Atomization (a type of drop tube). Two distinct morphologies were observed: an irregular undulated eutectic assumed to form during recalescence, followed by a regu ...

The goal of these review papers is to summarize the recent advances in the metallurgy of aluminium alloys and from this analysis, to try to outline future developments in this field. Part I deals with the transformation of aluminium alloys from the liquid ...
