In this paper, we present an analysis of the lightning events preceding initiation of upward lightning flashes from the Gaisberg and the Santis Towers. It is found that the majority of upward lightning discharges from both towers are initiated without any ...

In this paper, we give an overview of the experimental and theoretical PLC- related research work carried out in close cooperation by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the University Of Applied Sciences Of Western Switzerland. The work is condu ...

In this letter, we propose a formula for evaluating the transfer impedance of two-layer braided cable shields. The proposed formula results from the combination of the model proposed by Vance for the evaluation of the equivalent transfer impedance of a two ...

Full-wave numerical electromagnetic analysis (NEA) methods are defined as methodologies allowing the direct numerical solution of Maxwell's equations in both frequency and time domain. These methods are becoming the most promising approach to study complex ...

In the present paper, we show, by means of numerical simulations, that electromagnetic field data obtained from the radiation of a return-stroke lightning discharge and measured over a short-duration time-window can be exploited to reconstruct the attenuat ...

Vulnerability is estimated in terms of the effects that IEMI may induce to the services provided by the facility under study. We estimate the vulnerability by considering three variables: the likelihood, the risk, and the hardness. The different parameters ...

Severe weather events are responsible for hundreds of fatalities and millions of euros of damage every year in the Mediterranean basin. Lightning activity is a characteristic phenomenon of severe weather and often accompanies torrential rainfall, which und ...

The evaluation of lightning ElectroMagnetic (EM) fields represents the most cumbersome part of the lightning-induced voltages computation process. Their evaluation is usually performed through a numerical routine or with simplified analytical expressions, ...

In this paper we present an analysis of a large dataset of lightning and polarimetric weather radar data collected in the course of a lightning measurement campaign that took place in the summer of 2017 in the area surrounding Säntis, in the northeastern p ...

In this paper, we propose a new method for locating lightning discharges. The proposed method is based on the time reversal technique introduced for acoustics in the early 1990s. By analogy to the derivations in acoustics, equations for the focusing of ele ...

This paper proposes a novel method for the optimal parameter selection of the discrete-time switch model used in circuit solvers that adopt the fixed admittance matrix nodal method (FAMNM) approach. As known, FAMNM-based circuit solvers allow to reach effi ...

Engineering return stroke models can be categorized either as current generation (traveling current source type) models or current propagation (transmission line type) models. The current generation models are described among other parameters by a corona c ...

In this paper, we analyze the location error of time of arrival (ToA)-based lightning location systems (LLSs) caused by propagation effects over mountainous terrain around the Santis tower located in the Swiss Alps. The study is based on a full-wave three- ...

The paper proposes a novel method for the optimal parameter selection of the discrete-time switch model used in circuit solvers that adopt the Fixed Admittance Matrix Nodal Method (FAMNM) approach. As known, FAMNM-based circuit solvers allow to reach effic ...
