5-amino-6-methyl-2-benzimidazolone (AMBI), used in the manufacture of dyes, was characterised as a biorecalcitrant compound by means of different biodegradability tests. In order to enhance the biodegradability of this important pollutant, the application of Advanced Oxidation Process (AOPs) as a pre-treatment was explored. Some experiments were addressed to find the most efficient AOP. The systems H2O2/hv, TiO2/H2O2/hv, Fe3+/hv, Fe3+/H2O2 and Fe3+/H2O2/hv were compared. The photo-Fenton system was the most

Wastewater containing mainly 5-amino-6-methyl-2-benzimidazolone (AMBI), used in the manufacture of dyes, was characterized as bio-recalcitrant by means of different biodegradability tests. In order to enhance the biodegradability of this important pollutant, solar photocatalytic degradation methods were explored. The systems light/TiO2/O-2, light/TiO2/H2O2, light/Fe3+/O-2 and light/Fe3+/H2O2 were compared under direct sunlight at the Plataforma Solar de Almeria (Spain), using a Compound Parabolic Collector

In the production of acetate by Clostridium thermolacticum growing on lactose, considerable amounts of hydrogen were generated. Lactose available in large amounts from milk permeate, a wastestream of the dairy industry, appears to be a valuable substrate for cheap production of biohydrogen. In this study, continuous cultivation of C thermolacticum was carried out in a bioreactor, under anaerobic thermophilic conditions, on minimal medium containing 10 g l(-1) lactose. Different dilution rates and pH were te

This study focuses on the mineralization of 5-amino-6-methyl-2-benzimidazolone (AMBI), an important precursor in the industrial production of dyes, through an integrated Fe(III) photoassisted–biological system without addition of other electron acceptor than O2. The iron photoassisted process produces a biocompatible solution, removing 100% of the initial biorecalcitrant compound and 40% of the Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC), and then the complete mineralization was achieved in the biological treatment. The

Aims: The objective of this study was to increase the acetate production by Clostridium thermolacticum growing on lactose, available as a renewable resource in the milk and whey permeate from the cheese industry. Methods and Results: Experiments for increased acetate productivity by thermophilic anaerobes grown on lactose were carried out in batch cultures. Lactose at concentration of 30 mmol l(-1) (10 g l(-1)) was completely degraded by Cl. thermolacticum and growth rate was maximal. High concentrations of

We studied the electrochemical oxidation, on Pt anodes, of industrial wastewaters containing 5-amino-6-methyl-2-benzimidazolone (AMBI). Electrolysis of this non-biodegradable effluent produces simultaneous oxidation of AMBI and chloride ions. Highly oxidative chlorine intermediate species further boost the degradation of AMBI. Solution temperature, pH and current density affect little the degradation of AMBI. At our best conditions, AMBI was 100% degraded in 45 min. However, because the reaction intermediat

An invasive plate and frame capacitance probe was designed for dielec. const. measurements over a wide frequency range (10-5000 kHz) in a 5-L stirred-tank reactor. Preliminary measurements with polyethylene beads showed a linear variation of the effective permittivity with the vol. fraction of the beads, in accordance with the Maxwell-Wagner theory. Results obtained by bubbling air under various agitation and aeration rates at 500 kHz in deionized water and the effect of a non-ionic antifoam on permittivity

The effect of the addition of hydrogen-consuming microorganisms on the metabolism of Clostridium thermolacticum was studied. By growing this bacterium in continuous culture at 58 degrees C, on 29 mmol lactose l(-1) (10 g l(-1)) in the feed, with the H-2-co ...

The electro-oxidn. of 1,4-benzoquinone in water soln. was investigated. The benzoquinone concn., intermediate products, dissolved org. C (DOC), COD, and toxicity of the oxidized soln. was monitored during oxidn. with Ti/IrO2 and Ti/SnO2 anodes (in the following text: IrO2 and SnO2 anodes). It was found that the most important parameter is the nature of the anode. With the IrO2 anode, primary oxidn. was attained, i.e. benzene ring rupture occurred, resulting in an accumulation of carboxylic acids formation a

Biotrickling filter (BTF) technology was applied for the treatment of waste gas containing a mixture of chlorobenzene and 1,2-dichlorobenzene. An adapted microbial community was immobilised on a structured packing material. The strategy followed was to reach high removal efficiencies at initially low mass loading rates followed by an increase of the latter. This procedure was successful and resulted in a short start-up period of only 2 weeks. A 3-month operation under steady-state conditions showed good per

A review with 21 refs. on the strategy of wastewater treatment in org. chem. industry. Biodegradability tests, toxicity tests, aerobic and anaerobic treatment processes, and electrochem. oxidn. of org. substances are discussed with an example of a pilot plant for the combined electrochem. and biol. wastewater treatment.
