Rare earth elements (REE) were determined in 39 groundwater samples collected at 14 sites under low- and high-flow conditions. Water samples derived from aquifers hosted in crystalline, molasse, flysch, carbonate and evaporite rocks located in Western Swit ...

Radio frequency geophysical methods are known for being very versatile tools in ground- and groundwater investigation at shallow depths. They are fast and easy to use and allow a high density of information over large surfaces, which makes them very suitab ...

Technical difficulties associated with excavation works in tectonized geological settings are frequent. They comprise instantaneous and/or delayed convergence, sudden collapse of gallery roof and/or walls, outpouring of fault-filling materials and water in ...

The Laboratory of Engineering and Environmental Geology (GEOLEP) has been mandated by Swiss authorities (Swiss Federal Road Office FedRO) to test a new road runoff management concept. This concept promotes the diffuse infiltration of road runoff into infil ...

A new management policy regarding road runoff was proposed in 2002 by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN). This new concept is based on the diffuse infiltration of road runoff into embankment slopes, where soils will filter particles and co ...

Switzerland is exceptionally subjected to landslides; indeed, about 10% of its area is considered as unstable. Making this observation, its Department of the Environment (BAFU) introduced in 1997 a method to realize landslide hazard map. It is routinely used but, like most of the methods applied in Europe to map unstable areas, it is mainly based on the signs of previous or current phenomena (geomorphologic mapping, archive consultation, etc.) even though instabilities can appear where there is nothing to s

Elevated in-stream temperature has led to a surge in the occurrence of parasitic intrusion proliferative kidney disease and has resulted in fish kills throughout Switzerland's waterways. Data from distributed temperature sensing (DTS) in-stream measurement ...

In the process of urban growth, the underground is often only addressed once all surface alternatives have been exhausted. Experience shows that this can lead to unforeseen conflicts (e.g., subsidence, groundwater pollution) and to lost opportunities (e.g. ...

Four underground resources have been seen as having a long-term potential to support sustainable urban development: underground space, groundwater, geomaterials and geothermal energy. Utilization of these resources proposes a new paradigm of economic devel ...

A mathematical model is applied to the Aoste Valley (Italy), which is a good example of the hydrological workings of alluvial rock basin aquifers in mountainous regions. The course of the Dorea Baltea follows the valley, which between the altitudes of 500 and 600 m is dominated by summits reaching more than 3000 m. The lacustrine- and fluviatile-type sedimentary deposits are accompanied by several alluvial cones that, due to their varying nature, confer very diverse hydrodynamic characteristics to the land.

Geology – Basics for Engineers (second edition) presents the physical and chemical characteristics of the Earth, the nature and the properties of rocks and unconsolidated deposits/sediments, the action of water, how the Earth is transformed by various phenomena at different scales of time and space. The book shows the engineer how to take geological conditions into account in their projects, and how to exploit a wide range of natural resources in an intelligent way, reduce geological hazards, and manage sub

Sustainable management of underground natural resources is more and more a worthwhile topic. In particular, worrying about groundwater protection becomes imperative. Taking into account the increase of incompatibilities between water conservation and the use of other underground resources, the Geolep laboratory brought one of its research axes around to new methods for groundwater resources assessment and management. As these methods have to be as transparent as possible, we implemented a GIS to use standar

The Aosta plain like any intra-ridge alluvial valley, is it hydrogeological system where a multilayer detritic aquifer is recharged by several subwatersheds. In such valleys the preservation of the chemical (mass transfert) and hydraulic (pressure transfert) signals from upstream (input) to downstream (output) can no longer be accepted. Considering the fact that vertical heterogeneities engender hydraulic and chemical discontinuities, in Aosta plain the occurrence of lateral discontinuities in the same sedi

Recent decades have been marked by many disasters caused by natural hazards.Gravitational phenomena in particular have resulted in several deaths and extensive damage to infrastructure. Nearly 10% of Swiss territory is considered unstable. It therefore req ...

Traffic congestion and ground space scarcity are increasing the need to find more space in the urban underground. The demand-driven "top-down" planning of Urban Underground Space (UUS) is common worldwide. As natural resource, the endowments of UUS are dif ...

In the construction community, underground construction is perceived as being significantly more costly and more energy-consuming than comparable surface construction. Although the literature is scarce, studies that have attempted to quantify this differen ...
