The dry wear and tribocorrosion behaviour of pulsed plasma treated and non-treated Ni-Cr alloys sliding against alumina at 15 N were investigated by using a reciprocating wear test rig equipped with an electrochemical cell. The pulsed plasma treatment prod ...

In the present study, a forged CoCrMo (ISO 5832-12) has been subjected to pulsed plasma treatment in a N-2/H-2 atmosphere at low temperatures (below 500 A degrees C). This treatment resulted in the formation of a layer composed by dispersed chromium nitrid ...

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) and wrought Ti6Al4V were compared from a tribocorrosion perspective in 0.9 % NaCl, distinguishing between mechanical and chemical (oxidative) wear through potential-controlled measurements. The aim was to elucidate the manufacturing- and potential-dependent tribocorrosion mechanisms in a saline environment. While both manufacturing methods resulted in excellent corrosion resistance, the LPBF titanium alloy exhibited a finer, distinct microstructure, higher microhardness, and g

Nickel is widely used as a coating material in electroplating because of its good corrosion and wear resistance even at high temperature. Tribocorrosion has been identified as one of the main degradation mechanisms of nickel. This study evaluated the tribo ...

Tribocorrosion of passivating metals is a dynamic phenomenon causing degradation of materials by a combination of mechanical wear and electrochemical dissolution. The mechanical action typically produces a local removal of particles, metal as well as oxide ...

Space debris that re-enter the Earth's atmosphere can be partially or fully ablated along the trajectory path after hitting the atmosphere layers, once these become denser (approximately below 82 km). This paper combines re-entry survival analysis to by-pr ...

Cladding of a Zr-based metallic glass (MG) on an aluminum substrate was conducted using a layer-wise laser additive manufacturing (AM) method, leading to relative densities higher than 99%. The thickness of the cladding was about 300 μm. The effect of lase ...

Alumina wears when rubbing against certain metals (titanium and its alloys, nickel or ruthenium among others) in water lubricated contacts. However, alumina does not wear under similar tribocorrosion conditions (combined action of wear and corrosion) when ...

Kinetics of passive film growth on a CoCrMo biomedical alloy have been studied using the Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance technique (EQCM) in phosphate buffer solution at room temperature and 37 degrees C. CoCrMo layers were deposited on the qua ...

This work reports on the tribocorrosion properties of a CoCrMo alloy sliding under imposed passive potential against alumina in sulfuric acid-glycerol mixtures exhibiting different viscosities and thus, in principle, lubrication properties. As expected, we ...

Sterilization is a prerequisite for biomedical devices before contacting the human body. It guarantees the lack of infection by eliminating microorganisms (i.e., bacteria, spores and fungi). It constitutes the last fabrication process of a biomedical devic ...

Wear is a key problem limiting the lifetime and performance of total hip arthroplasty. The synovial fluid, acting as lubricant, can alleviate the wear of implants but also introduces corrosion. The interaction of mechanical wear and electrochemical corrosi ...

The corrosion of iron or steel in contact with bentonite is a key factor affecting the long-term safety of radioactive waste disposal system. Previous studies focused on corrosion after long-term burial in compact bentonites, however, little work was dedicated to the corrosion of iron exposed to bentonite slurries, that can appear in case of fracture of the bentonite jacket separating steel from underground water. In this study, accelerated corrosion experiments were performed on pure iron in basic bentonit

The tribocorrosion property of tungsten plays a great role in the chemical mechanical polishing of tungsten plugs used in integrated circuits. This study applied a lubricated tribocorrosion model to tungsten, verified and calibrated the model using results ...

Titanium is an interesting material for biomedical implants thanks to its physical and chemical properties. In particular, TiO2 coatings with a surface characterized by micro-patterning combined with nano-topography are extremely attractive for orthopaedic ...

Electroplated composite Au/SiO2 coatings on a nickel substrate have been produced by dispersing an emulsion of silica nanoparticles (20 nm in diameter) in an industrial hard-gold bath. The tribological behaviour of the Au/SiO2 coatings with different SiO2 ...

The present study investigated the role of alloy microstructure and surface roughness on wear and friction behavior of leaded and unleaded tin bronzes. Ball-on-disk experiments were carried out under dry conditions with steel balls sliding against bronze disks. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive electron microscopy (EDX), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy were performed to analyze the sliding tracks and the ball scars. The wear reducing effect of lead

Deep geological repositories for the disposal of radioactive waste rely partly on the integrity of canisters and on the inhibition of microbial growth by the bentonite barrier for the effective isolation of the waste from the environment. Canister integrity can be compromised by the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and by abiotic corrosion. Unexpected aerobic microbial growth and SRB inhibition under anoxic conditions were observed in bentonite during a recent long-term in-situ experiment, which

Complications related to the neck-stem junction of modular stems used for total hip arthroplasty (THA) are generating increasing concern. A 74-year-old male had increasing pain and a cutaneous reaction around the scar 1 year after THA with a modular neck-s ...

Modular hip joint implants were introduced in arthroplasty medical procedures because they facilitate the tailoring of patients’ anatomy, the use of different materials in one single configuration, as well as medical revision. However, in certain cases, su ...
