The better understanding of the degree of mixing in highly viscous media is of crucial interest with respect to the product quality during a polymn. reaction. A special reactor composed of a loop tubular reactor followed by a tubular part, all being filled with motionless mixers, was developed in our labs in collaboration with a manufacturer. To investigate and det. the degree of mixing, a special test reaction using an inline sensor was developed. Application of these results to very fast copolymn. was rea

Thermally unstable polymers such as poly(Me methacrylate) are degraded considerably during industrial processing. This degrdn. and its redn. to a min. were investigated in both lab and continuous pilot-scale expts. A three-step degrdn. mechanism, starting at 180 Deg, was proved by Thermogravimetrical Anal. (TGA) and a kinetic approach to describe it was derived. The knowledge of this degrdn. behavior was then applied to a pilot-scale process with a prodn. rate of 10 kg/h and the process yield loss during th

University chemical laboratories, contrary to common perception, are dangerous working environments. Unlike industry, where most processes are standardized, in academia, they are modified so frequently that in-depth and detailed risk assessment becomes unf ...

There is a need for a tool that facilitates safety decision-making in the academic environment. As this environment is very different from that of industry or other public sectors, there is no information available on the factors that influence the decisio ...

The management of waste containing nanomaterials, here termed “nanowaste”, is not yet sufficiently regulated at both national and international levels. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of nanowaste management, situating laboratory practices within the broader regulatory context, with special attention to the Basel Convention. We then discuss potential measures to avoid or minimize nanowaste, options for nanowaste recovery and recycling, nanowaste risk assessment, protective equipment, categorization,

This paper explores safety climate as a phenomenon. Comparative analyses of the survey designed and distributed among European universities with a study published in 2013 demonstrating that safety climate studies targeting respondents with supervisory posi ...

The present paper highlights a new safety management program, MICE (Management, Information, Control and Emergency), which has been specifically adapted for the academic environment. The process starts with an exhaustive hazard inventory supported by a pla ...

Research in nanoscience continues to bring forward a steady stream of new nanomaterials and processes that are being developed and marketed. While scientific committees and expert groups deal with the harmonization of terminology and legal challenges, risk ...

For efficient inherently safe design, awareness of all available options at the appropriate decision-making moment is key. Simulations offer both timely availability and large screening possibilities. Therefore computer-aided product design gained in popul ...

The specific problem of non-converted reactant accumulation encountered in fed-batch reactor is a challenging task of process safety. In order to avoid such situation that may lead to a runaway reaction, the reaction kinetics and reactor dynamic must be kn ...

Wrong manipulation, storage or disposal of chemicals can cause great damage whether it occurs on industrial plants, in academia or at home. Amongst the numerous reasons, lack of knowledge and haste are the most common ones. Except for a few substances subj ...

Most of the available risk management methods are not directly applicable to academic research laboratories. One solution to systematically perform risk analyses in this environment is the Laboratory Assessment and Risk Analysis (LARA) method. This method ...

A simple and general procedure has been developed to determine the thermal behaviour of a reactor based on heat balance, PID temperature control, and jacket behaviour. Using only temperature heating/cooling ramps followed by isothermal stages, such a proce ...

Several researches have dealt with the thermal initiation of Me methacrylate (MMA) in the past. Some of them already discussed the presence of peroxide contg. species that are formed from dissolved oxygen and the monomer itself as main reason for this init ...

As the number of engineered nanomaterials (ENM) used in research increases with an incredible speed, health and safety specialists are continuously faced with the challenge of evaluating the risks involved with these materials. Nowadays there is not enough ...
