The scarcity of freshwater resources is a critical problem in semi-arid zones and marginal quality water is increasingly being used in agriculture. This paper aimed at evaluating the physico-chemical and biological risks on irrigated soils and fruits of ma ...

Wastewater reuse in agriculture is a widespread practice in developing countries, especially in urban areas where water shortage and poverty encourage people to use that marginal resource. Raw or treated wastewaters are used by farmers, but even treated wa ...

A simulation model with time-dependent hydraulic conductivity parameters was used to predict the effects of three different tillage practices: conventional tillage (CT), no-tillage (NT) and subsoiling tillage (ST) on the components of the soil water balance during the summer maize growing season. The predictive capability of the model was improved, particularly for the subsoiling tillage case. The simulation results show that temporal changes in soil hydraulic conductivity induced by different tillage pract

An optical method based on fluorescence spectroscopy was developed for in-situ non-destructive, real time, org. pollutant detection and quantification in soil. Optical fiber-based light-induced fluorescence probes allowing in-situ specific chem. detection were constructed. Pyranine was chosen as a model fluorescent polycyclic arom. hydrocarbon (PAH). The effect of sand particles on fluorescence measurements was established: the fluorescence intensity in water-satd. sand was 8 times lower than in aq. solns.,

Compared to daily rainfall data, observed subdaily rainfall times are rare and often very short. For hydrologic modeling, this problem is often addressed by generating synthetic hourly rainfall series, with rainfall generators calibrated on relevant rainfa ...

Rainfall is poorly modeled by general circulation models (GCMs) and requires appropriate downscaling for local-scale hydrological impact studies. Such downscaling methods should be robust and accurate (to handle, e.g., extreme events and uncertainties), bu ...

Integrated water resources management is generally considered a relevant methodology given the pressing necessity to use water in a sustainable manner. However, its application framework still needs refinements. As a first step towards the creation of such an improved framework, a system model for water management has been proposed, including a broad view upon the elements involved directly or indirectly (such as the energy, the public health or the housing conditions) in water management. The model may be

Although generally accepted as a necessary step to improve water management and planning, integrated water resources management (IWRM) methodology does not provide a clear definition of what should be integrated. The various water-related issues that IWRM ...

Purpose: To report the outcome and complications of a combined surgical technique of modified deep sclerectomy and trabeculectomy (mDST) for glaucoma. Patients and Methods: Retrospective study of 44 eyes of 43 patients with open and closed angle glaucoma w ...

Precis: In this study, we report clinical results after implantation of an adjustable glaucoma drainage device. The intraocular pressure (IOP) profile was efficiently controlled postoperatively as the resistance to aqueous humor outflow was finely adjusted ...

Soil sorption processes largely control the environmental fate of herbicides. Therefore accuracy of sorption parameters is crucial for accurate prediction of herbicide mobility in agricultural soils. A combined experimental and statistical study was carrie ...
