A theoretical modeling framework is proposed to follow shape and residual stress evolutions of layered flexible display structures with respect to deposition, ambient temperature and relative humidity conditions. This model couples the mechanical equilibri ...

Supercritical CO2 foaming of amorphous and semicrystalline polylactides plasticized by blending with 20 wt% polyethylene glycol has been investigated as a means of producing low-stiffness bioresorbable scaffolds for tissue engineering. For a given set of f ...

The fusion bonding of neat polypropylene (PP) has been investigated under non-isothermal conditions with different initial adherend temperatures, and the results compared with results from bonds prepared under isothermal conditions with identical adherend temperatures. The mode I critical strain energy release rate of the bonds, Gc, was measured using a double cantilever beam geometry with a constant crack opening displacement. The effect of the adherend temperature and the hold time are summarized in time-

Flexible displays present a challenging problem in terms of mechanical integrity, a result of the considerable hygro-thermomechanical contrast between the inorganic, brittle device layers and the compliant polymer substrates. This paper reviews the main ap ...

The relative sequence of shrinkage and evolution of modulus of a thermoset resin during cure leads to the build-up of internal stresses, especially if the resin is constrained by the presence of other materials in the form of a substrate or reinforcing fibers. To enable prediction of the levels of internal stress generated during processing and to determine appropriate processing windows, the evolution of the modulus of an epoxy-amine system during cure has been characterized and described with a phenomenol

In 2009, l’Hydroptère broke the symbolic barrier of 50 knots and became the world fastest sailing boat over both 500 meters and 1 nautical mile. This major achievement relied on the high skills of the sailing team but also on technical advances of the boat, resulting from the scientific collaboration between the Hydroptère Design Team and the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). In the present article, we highlight the multidisciplinary research activity performed within EPFL in the course of th

The mode I inter-laminar fracture toughness of advanced knitted textile composites was investigated. Two complex weft-knitted glass fabrics were selected for the study: a triple rib knit and a Milano knit were impregnated with a tough epoxy resin and tested using a double cantilever beam geometry. For both knitted composites, the influence of the growth direction was studied by investigating crack propagation in both the wale and course directions. The fracture toughness was quantified by determining the cr

In order to describe the different events occurring during the anionic polymerization of polyamide 12 (PA12), a general concept of a time, temperature, and transformation (TTT) diagram was established and related to reactive processing conditions. Polymerization kinetics were established, and it was found that the reaction was best described by an autocatalytic expression. Polymerization temperatures above and below the final polymer melting temperature were considered. Furthermore, the variation of the mel

To improve temperature durability for autoclaving of SiOx diffusion barrier coatings on polypropylene, plasma polymerized hexamethyldisiloxane (pp-HMDSO) is applied by plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition as interlayer material and compared with resu ...

The application of hydrogels as load-bearing biomedical components is often limited by their mechanical properties. Often an attempt to improve a hydrogel's stiffness is accompanied by a loss of toughness and swelling properties. In this work, we show that ...

The skin wrinkling phenomenon was investigated in the case of ultra-light sandwich structures with a honeycomb core manufactured by one-shot vacuum bag processing. The interplay between process pressure and compressive strength of the skin was established. ...

Magnetite nanoparticles are synthesized by thermal decomposition of Fe(acac)(3) and subsequently coated with a silica shell exploiting a water-in-oil synthetic procedure. The as-produced nanopowder is mixed with a photocurable hyperbranched resin and the p ...

Phenol and melamine-formaldehyde (PF and MF) cellulose composites are being used extensively in the laminate industry. Despite their many advantages, flat panels produced from such materials have a tendency to warp immediately after processing as well as during subsequent service. This report presents results of an investigation into the thermoviscoelastic properties and the process-induced internal stresses of PF cellulose composites. Thermoelastic properties were measured using Electronic Speckle Pattern

The influence of temperature and moisture activity on the viscoelastic behavior of fluorinated membranes for fuel cell applications was investigated. Uncrosslinked and crosslinked ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE)-based proton-conducting membranes were p ...

The fracture behavior of composite rubber particle-toughened polymethylmethacrylate has been investigated over a wide range of test speeds, encompassing impact conditions. When the entanglement density of the matrix was increased and its glass transition t ...

The aim of this study is to develop coatings on polymer substrates with a combined increase in oxygen barrier performance and toughness, based on SiOx coatings modified with multifunctional organo-silane polymers of controlled polarity and reactivity. As a ...

Wood fibre reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) composite foams have been successfully produced using supercritical carbon dioxide. A significant increase of specific properties, both stiffness and strength, was achieved by adding 5-10 wt% wood fibres. The exp ...

A process for making hollow composite structures or vessels which includes the steps of: A) heating a mixture of thermoplastic matrix and reinforcing fibres wrapped over a rigid or semi-rigid thermoplastic liner or bladder above the melting point of the th ...

Determination of fracture parameters for brittle coatings with a sub-micron thickness is not a straightforward task. Since direct evaluation through testing with for instance a double cantilever beam or compact tension tests is hardly applicable due to the ...

The invention relates to a foamed polymer composite product incorporating several fillers and/or fibres and several pores characterized by the fact that it shows two distinct gradients, namely a filler and/or fibre density gradient and a pore density gradi ...
