Cast polyurethane thermosets have been modified with randomly oriented exfoliated and intercalated montmorillonite clay usinghyperbranched polymers (HBP) as reactive additives to promote dispersion of the clay platelets. The influence of the clay content o ...

glass fibre composites were successfully prepared. A specific processing method was developed for consolidated composites exhibiting different fibre concentration gradients. As the conditions to prepare PLA polymer foams with specific porosity morphology w ...

We report the first measurements of self-healing polymers with embedded shape memory alloy (SMA) wires. Improvements of healed peak loads by up to a factor of two are observed, approaching the performance of the virgin material. Moreover, the repairs can b ...

In non-autoclave processing of sandwich structures, the pressure level inside the honeycomb becomes a critical process parameter, which depends on the permeability to air of the upper skin. In this work, prepreg and adhesive permeabilities were determined ...

Intercalates and exfoliates formed from layered materials and dendritic polymers are disclosed, together with the uses of these materials, e.g. in producing composite materials. The dispersion of layered materials in a dendritic polymer matrix (hyperbranch ...

Wooden racket paddles were modified with rubber and carbon fibre laminates and their differences tested in terms of flexural, damping, and coefficient of restitution properties. Four rackets types were designed: a wood reference, wood with rubber, carbon f ...

The skin wrinkling phenomenon was investigated in case of ultralight sandwich structures with honeycomb core manufactured by one shot vacuum bag processing. A relation between process pressure and compressive strength of the skin was established. ...

The crystallization kinetics of polyamide-12 has been investigated using a combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and hot-stage optical microscopy. The DSC data for isothermal crystallization were consistent with a simple two-parameter Avrami model for isothermal crystallization and optical measurements of the spherulite growth rates and nucleation density. On the basis of semiempirical expressions for these quantities, it is shown that with small adjustments the model can also account for D

In 2009, l’Hydroptère broke the symbolic barrier of 50 knots and became the world fastest sailing boat over both 500 meters and 1 nautical mile. This major achievement relied on the high skills of the sailing team but also on technical advances of the boat, resulting from long years of studies and development. This achievement is also an open window to a new goal: flying around the world. In the present article, we present this long and incredible story, highlighting the different steps, the technology invo

The effect of sizing on bending rigidity in fibre bundles was investigated. Particular attention was paid to the effect of film formers and anti-static agents on the behaviour of glass fibre bundles under forced packing conditions. The bending rigidity of ...

The influence of the mould material on the build-up of internal stresses during autoclave cure of carbon fibre composites was investigated using embedded optical fibre Bragg gratings. Unidirectional and cross-ply laminates were cured on four flat moulds: a ...

Epoxy-functionalised hyperbranched polymers (HBP) were combined with aminosilanes to form coatings and their effect on the practical adhesion between galvanised steel and polyethylene was investigated. It was shown that HBPs were initially soluble in silan ...

The development of photovoltaic (PV) devices based on dye-sensitized TiO2-coated Ti fibers has opened up exciting possibilities for novel PV textile applications. The cohesion and adhesion of the TiO2 layer are identified as crucial factors in maintaining ...

Intrinsic, thermal, and hygroscopic contributions to the in-plane residual stress in silicon nitride films on polyimide substrates are identified, based on iso- hygric thermal ramps and isothermal relative humidity jumps, combined with non-linear elastic m ...

We report on the modelling and experimental validation of a photopolymerizable hydrogel for a Nucleus Pulposus replacement. ...

The feasibility of using a low temperature liquid composite molding technique to produce smart composites with embedded shape memory alloys was investigated. The epoxy system of EPON 828 resin and DETA hardener was evaluated, with embedded NiTiCu shape mem ...

A novel thermoplastic programmable preforming process, TP-P4, has been used to manufacture preforms for non-isothermal compression molding. Commingled glass and polypropylene yarns are deposited by robot onto a vacuum screen, followed by a heat-setting ope ...

The invention relates in particular to a method to process composite structures with tailored stiffness and damping performance incorporating a smart material, namely a shear thickening fluid (STF), preferably at the interface between two elements belongin ...
