The influence of hyperbranched polymer grafted polypropylene (PP-HBP) on the morphology of polypropylene (PP)/polyamide 6 (PA6) blends has been investigated. The final morphology was strongly influenced by the PP-HBP compatibilizer concentration. At low concentrations, PP-HBP acts as an emulsifying agent, reducing the size of the dispersed phase and preventing coalescence. This is due to the high reactivity and diffusitivity of PP-HBP rapidly forming a high density of copolymers at the interface. Compared t

The strength of fusion bonds between polyamide 12 plaques has been investigated as a function of processing conditions, using the double cantilever beam geometry to measure the mode I critical strain energy release rate, GC. Bonding was carried out using an instrumented press, which allowed systematic variation of the bonding time, the holding pressure, the interface temperature and the initial difference in temperature between the plaques. GC was generally found to increase with hold time and interface tem

In liquid composite moulding, capillary phenomena take place as the fibre/air interface is progressively replaced by the fibre/resin interface. These effects are often neglected when computing the flow front progression into the fibre preform, because the ...

The present work investigates the saturation damage state of a two-layer coating on a substrate (layer 1/layer 2/substrate) under uniaxial tensile loading in order to derive expressions for the interfacial strength between layer 1 and layer 2, and between ...

The crack onset strain (COS) of 4-level thin film transistor (TFT) devices on both steel foils and thin polyimide (PI) films was investigated using tensile experiments carried out in situ in an optical microscope. Cracks initiated first within the SiO2 ins ...

A novel electro-fragmentation method was developed as a fast alternative to the time consuming fragmentation test carried out in situ in a microscope, to investigate the failure of dielectric inorganic coatings on polymer substrates. An ultrathin conductiv ...

The influence of the fiber mat structure and the matrix rheology on the squeeze flow behavior of thermoplastic composites for compression flow molding has been investigated. An analytical model for isothermal squeeze flow has been developed and experimentally confirmed. The model is based on the role of the matrix at local fiber interaction points. The squeeze flow rheology of the composite can be evaluated from the shear flow of the pure matrix as expressed by a Carreau equation, using two micromechanical-

A model for the consolidation of thermoplastic composites reinforced with a warpknitted fabric was developed. The evolution of void content during composite consolidation achieved via film stacking was related to the processing parameters and the material properties. Since the knitting process results in local variations of fiber volume fractions even within a tow, the flow mechanisms are not identical to those occurring in homogeneously dispersed fibers. Two different types of micro-scale porosities were d

Using a rheometer coupled with an UV-light generator, the viscoelastic behaviour during the fast cure of star-branched polyester is investigated. The 32 arm star polymers consist of a hyperbranched polyester core, BoltornTM and linear grafts of poly(E-caprolactone) (degree of polymerisation: 20.52) with methacrylate end groups. The resins are crystalline and the melting points range from 34 to 50 .C; films can be formed and cured below 80 .C. The crossover of G. and G.. was used as the gel point. The time t

Flexural and torsional rigidity are important properties of skis. However, the flexural and torsional rigidity that lead to optimal performance remain to be established. In the present study, four pairs of slalom skis that differed in flexural and torsiona ...

A method to obtain quantitative information about the chemical composition spatial distribution on rough (Ra between half a micrometer and tens of micrometers) surfaces is developed by using a Raman microscopy technique. It is tested on a wrinkled polyesterurethane-acrylate powder coating surfaces with pronounced starpatterned (mountains and valleys) structures. Raman spectra at different features on the surface are analyzed quantitatively by using a least-squares ® tting method based on coating components

The aim of this work is to integrate polypropylene/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposite matrices into conventional fibre-reinforced composites. Two types of composite have been considered: long fibre-reinforced composites from co-woven glass fibre and nanoc ...

Two to four pseudo-generation aliphatic hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) with OH end-groups have been solution processed with various types of montmorillonite (MMT) layered alumino-silicate clays, and carefully dried to produce solid HBP/MMT nanocomposites. Exfoliated nanocomposites were obtained by processing the polyester HBPs with up to 20 wt% Naþ MMT in water, and intercalation only became dominant at higher loadings, for which the MMT layer spacing was directly dependent on the HBP pseudo-generation numb

The free energy of mixing during cure has been modeled for different blends of linear unsaturated polyester, styrene and allyl ether functional hyperbranched polymers. The molecular weight of the blend components has been implemented as measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) into the Flory-Huggins equation. This approach enables the distinction to be made between the contributions of enthalpy and entropy of mixing, the latter being automatically followed during curing by the development of average

A multiplexed immunoassay-based antibiotic sensing device integrated in a lab-on-a-chip format is described. The approach is multidisciplinary and involves the convergent development of a multi-antibiotic competitive immunoassay based on sensitive waveleng ...

In this study (0-3) P(VDF-TrFE)/BaTiO3 composites containing up to 60 vol% of ceramic phase were prepared by solvent casting or compression molding. Their thermomechanical, dielectric, and piezoelectric properties were investigated, and discussed in the li ...

The mechanical properties of ultrathin silicon oxide (SiOx ) coatings plasma-deposited on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films were investigated with particular attention paid to the effect of additives located in the superficial layers of the polymer ...

The forced compression behavior of random 3D and 2D pulp fiber networks is investigated. Existing theories are found to describe well the evolution of packing stress with fiber volume fraction for the pulp networks. It was, moreover, found that the packing behavior of an initially random 3D network of pulp fibers does not go through a transition to a 2D network packing behavior as it is compressed. Rather, the fibers exhibit localized collapse at contact points, a result of the hollow nature of the pulp fib

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has been used to investigate the effect of laponite clay on microdeformation in thin latex-based polystyrene (PS) films, in which the laponite was concentrated at the original interfaces between the PS particles. At r ...

The influence of the surface morphology of semicrystalline polyamide 12 PA12! on the adhesion of thin silicon oxide coatings is analyzed by means of uniaxial fragmentation tests and scanning local-acceleration microscopy SLAM!. Two types of PA12 substrates are investigated, namely, as-received PA12, which contains large spherulites, and quenched PA12, which has a relatively smooth, homogeneous surface structure. The adhesion of the coating is found to be identical for the two types of PA12. This indicates t
