Ferroelectric ceramic – polymer composites have a unique mix of electrical and mechanical properties. Piezoelectric and pyroelectric activity, a wide range of dielectric constants and high breakdown strength are combined with mechanical flexibility, formab ...

The aim of this investigation was to test the biocompatibility of three-dimensional bioresorbable foams made of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA), alone or filled with hydroxyapatite (HA) or beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP), with human primary osteoblasts, usi ...

An impregnation model has been developed to evaluate the infiltration phenomena that occur during a novel near net shape preforming method. This process comprises automated deposition of thermoplastic resin and unidirectional (UD) carbon fibres to a pre-pr ...

Solvent cast and compression molded composite films based on poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene), containing pristine and silylated BaTiO3 particles, were poled, and their electromechanical response (d(33)), their dielectric properties, and the cry ...

The working electrode of a dye-sensitized photovoltaic fiber is constituted of a porous TiO2 coated titanium wire. The cohesion and adhesion of such a brittle oxide coating on the ductile metal substrate are identified as crucial factors in maintaining pho ...

A polymer material system has been developed to propose an injectable, UV and in situ curable hydrogel with properties similar to the native nucleus pulposus of intervertebral disc. Neat hydrogels based on Tween® 20 trimethacrylates (T3) and N-vinyl-2-pyrr ...

The aim of this work is to understand the interactions and interphase formation mechanisms between a liquid aminosilane oligomer (γ -APS) and glass, steel or gold surfaces as a function of the pH of the liquid aminosilane. When basic liquid γ -APS (pH 11.4 ...

When a thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU) is applied onto galvanized steel by a hot melt process, the subsequent adhesion and its durability are very sensitive to the chemical bonds created at the interface. The effects of several surface treatment ...

Bitumen is a complex viscoelastic material used as a binder in applications ranging from road paving to waterproof membranes for roofing [1]. In such applications, bitumen is often blended with a polymer in order to improve its elasticity. The resulting po ...

The rheological behavior of two hyperbranched polymer/silica suspensions with different dispersion states, surface chemistries, and concentrations of the silica nanoparticles was investigated in terms of viscoelastic properties, activation energy for viscous flow, and yield stress. The viscoelastic properties of both types of suspensions were reduced to a master curve that was a function of the limiting viscosity and shear modulus. A liquid-to-solid transition and correlated activation energy change were fo

The effect of temperature on the crack onset strain (COS) of brittle coatings on polymer substrates was investigated through a series of temperature-controlled tensile tests carried out in situ under an optical microscope. It was observed that the failure ...

On application of heat, shape memory polymers (SMPs) are able to revert to a primary shape from a secondary shape induced by mechanical deformation. It may be desirable to induce shape recovery at controlled rates under quasi-isothermal conditions, e. g. in certain biomedical applications in which actuation occurs at body temperature, requiring knowledge of the time dependent response of SMPs. In the present work, the time dependence of isothermal shape recovery has been investigated for two shape memory po

The mechanical integrity of tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) thin films sputtered onto a high temperature aromatic polyester developed for flexible display applications was investigated by means of tensile experiments equipped with electrical measurement, and carried out in-situ in an optical microscope. Attention was paid to the influence of ITO thickness, composition and crystalline microstructure, internal stress, annealing, and polymer substrate. It was observed that process-induced internal stresses were s

Novel amphiphilic multi-arm star-block copolymers with a hyperbranched core, a hydrophobic inner shell, and a hydrophilic outer shell have been prepared from a commercial hyperbranched polyester macroinitiator by ring-opening polymerization of -caprolacton ...

Cohesive and adhesive properties of silicon oxide barrier coatings deposited from an oxygen/hexamethyldisiloxane gas mixture by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition, with controlled incorporation of carbon on 12 mm thick polyethylene terephtalate film ...

Aminosilane solutions with pH equal to 8 and to 11 were applied and cured on SiO2 coated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films. The permeability of the silane-silica hybrid coating on PET was reduced twofold compared to that of the SiO2/PET film, at sol ...

Among the century’s main challenges, climate change and the need for energy sources diversification are of great importance. In this context, renewable energies undoubtedly have an important role to play. Photovoltaic (PV) electricity is especially well su ...

In this paper, the chemorheological and dynamic mechanical behavior of melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resins of four different formaldehyde/melamine (F/M) molar ratios (1.25, 1.5 1.75 and 2.00) are investigated. MF resins polymerize via a polycondensation reaction involving formation of up to 10 wt% of H2O on cure. This typically results in rapid and extensive foaming of the resin when it is cured under atmospheric pressure. Experimental adaptation for the foaming behavior of MF resins is used to gather rheolog

Using an integrated processing methodology, an injection or compression moulded thermoplastic structure can be locally reinforced, for example, with textile structures or uni-directional fibre tows. Netshape components can be produced with cycle times typi ...

We demonstrated the localisation of impacts in orthotropic carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite materials to within a few centimetres, using a sparse array of fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. This type of sensor is easily embedded in composit ...
