The current status of the ITER magnetics diagnostic is summarised. The various risks are discussed on the basis of when they could be present during ITER operation and appropriate mitigation is reviewed. An implementation risk or common mode operation fail ...

This Letter presents the first direct experimental measurements of the damping of toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmodes (TAE), carried out in the JET tokamak. These measurements were obtained during the first experiments to drive these modes with antennas external to a tokamak plasma. Different regimes corresponding to different dominant TAE absorption mechanisms with a wide range of damping rates, 10(-3) less than or equal to gamma/omega less than or equal to 10(-1), have been identified in Ohmically heate

Frequency locking of edge localized modes (ELMs) to the vertical plasma movements induced by magnetic perturbations first demonstrated in TCV was successfully repeated in ASDEX Upgrade. However, the ELMs were triggered in ASDEX Upgrade when the plasma was ...

A 'standard', single null lower diverted discharge has been developed to enable continuous monitoring of the first wall conditions and to characterise the effectiveness and influence of wall conditioning in the TCV tokamak. Measurements over a period encompassing nearly 2000 ohmic discharges of varying configuration and input power show the global confinement time and main plasma impurity concentrations to be good general indicators of the first wall condition, whilst divertor target profiles demonstrate st

Active control of the resistive wall mode has been considered as an alternative way, besides passive control by plasma rotation, to stabilize the mode in advanced scenarios in ITER. We show that a significant improvement of the feedback system is achievabl ...

The effects of plasma shape on confinement and sawtooth stability are studied for positive and negative discharge triangularity and for different elongations with 1.5 MW centrally deposited ECH power

The results of a previous paper claiming the demonstration that edge localized mode (ELM) dynamics on TCV are chaotic in a number of cases has recently been called into question, because the statistical test employed was found to also identify linear auto regressive-moving average (ARMA) models as chaotic. The TCV ELM data has therefore been re-examined with an improved method that is able to make this distinction, and the ARMA model is found to be an inappropriate description of the dynamics on TCV The hyp

ELM time series from TCV Ohmic H-mode plasmas are analysed in order to extract information on the ELM process. Firstly, signatures of a chaotic behaviour called unstable periodic orbits become visible when particular plasma conditions are reached. Secondly, the ELMs are sometimes synchronized with the sawteeth activity. The dependence of the phase of the synchronization and the ratio of the ELM frequency to the sawteeth frequency on the plasma parameters is described.

This paper summarises the approach taken to develop an open architecture full tokamak discharge simulator - DINA-CH based on the DINA code and implemented under graphical programming control using Matlab-SIMULINK. The evolution path and present status are ...

Plasma control concepts are introduced which are likely to change when going from a 500-1000 s tokamak pulse to the discharges in a steady state tokamak, whose more economical design relies on the reduced number of thermal and mechanical stress duty cycles.

Innovative 3D high-frequency magnetic sensors have been designed and manufactured in-house for installation on the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV), and are currently routinely operational. These sensors combine the Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic ( ...

This paper presents the multiple set of requirements for the ITER magnetic diagnostic systems and the current status of the various R&D activities performed by the EU partners. ...
