Confined interfaces between cement grout and other materials such as embossed steel or rough concrete are formed in an innovative new steel-concrete connection for composite bridges. This article presents the experimental study of such interfaces and inves ...

The recent demand for architectural transparency has drastically increased the use of glass material for structural purpose. However, connections between structural glass members represent one of the most critical aspects of glass engineering, due to the f ...

This paper deals with the design method and the experimental verification of a new type of steel–concrete composite beam under static and fatigue loading. The connection is an alternative solution for steel–concrete composite bridges suitable for prefabric ...

A new type of connection for steel-concrete composite bridges was developed by the Steel Structures Laboratory of Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. Resistance to longitudinal shear is based on the development of shear stresses in the confined inter ...

In modern buildings, glass is increasingly used as a load-carrying material in structural components, such as glass beams. For glass beams especially the edge strength of glass is important. However, the strength of glass is not a material constant but dep ...

Temperatures measurements during flame cutting of a thick steel plate and measurements of the extension of the fusion and heat affected zones and Vickers hardness after cutting have been performed. Additionally, a 3-D thermal model for simulation of flame- ...

Residual stresses must be taken into account when evaluating the stability of a steel bridge girder. Residual stresses are unavoidable, as manufacturing processes for steel plates introduce thermal residual stresses in the material. For welded built-up sections, such as those commonly used in large steel plate girders, these thermal residual stresses are due to 1) cooling after rolling, 2) flame cutting of the flanges, and 3) welding between the web and the flange. Residual stresses can influence the latera

This paper presents the results of long term experiments of four point bending test with structural laminated glass plates. For experiments 6 mm thick annealed Soda-Lime-Silica Glass and three different interlayer laminates were used: Polyvinyl butyral (PV ...

This paper investigates the effects of glass type (annealed, heat-strengthened and fully tempered), reinforcement percentage (hollow section and full section) and beam size (1.5 and 3.2 m) on the structural response of SG-laminated reinforced glass beams. ...

Tensile strength of structural glass elements is highly influenced by flaws. For this paper, the study concentrates on the fracture origin i.e. the critical flaw, situated at the edge of a glass element. In the current study the influence of two different ...

The Lateral Torsional Buckling (L.T.B.) design of beams in buildings has received considerable attention over the last decades, and relatively similar improved design rules are now implemented in major design standards. On the contrary, it may be shown tha ...

Lateral torsional buckling (LTB), a complex phenomenon of instability, occurs when a beam is solicited by a bending force. In the area of steel and composite bridges girders which are characterised by slender plate girders, few experimental and theoretical ...

The mechanical response of post-tensioned glass beams is explored in this paper. This is done through bending experiments on post-tensioned glass beam specimens with either mechanically anchored or adhesively bonded steel tendons by which a beneficial pre- ...

This paper concentrates on the characterization of the heat flow present during flame cutting of 60 mm thick steel (S355N) flanges, a typical size used in the fabrication of bridge girders. Experimental results are associated with a finite element analysis ...

This paper deals with of a new type of steel-concrete connection for composite beams. The connection is an alternative solution for steel-concrete composite bridges suitable for prefabrication and fast erection. The composite action of the beam is establis ...

In this study the structural response of post-tensioned structural glass beams is investigated. This is done through four-point bending tests on two series of post-tensioned glass beam specimens. The beams consist of three layers of annealed float glass an ...

This paper investigates the effects of temperature, thermal cycling and humidity on the structural response of SG-laminated reinforced glass beams (SG = SentryGlas®). To do so, a series of pull-out test (to investigate the bond strength of the SG interlayer) and a series of bending tests (to investigate the structural response of the beams) have been performed at -20, +23, +60 and +80ºC (the latter temperature only for the pull-out tests), after thermal cycling between -20 and +30ºC, and after humidity expo
