We consider models of N interacting objects, where the interaction is via a common resource and the distribution of states of all objects. We introduce the key scaling concept of intensity; informally, the expected number of transitions per object per time ...

Artificial immune systems (AIS) use the concepts and algorithms inspired by the theory of how the human immune system works. This document presents the design and initial evaluation of a new artificial immune system for collaborative spam filtering. Collaborative spam filtering allows for the detection of not-previously-seen spam content, by exploiting its bulkiness. Our system uses two novel and possibly advantageous techniques for collaborative spam filtering. The first novelty is local processing of the

We consider the problem of coordination among replicated SDN controllers, where the challenge is to ensure a consistent view of the network while reacting to network events in a prompt manner. Existing solutions are either consensus-based, which achieve co ...

Energy-detection (ED) receivers can take advantage of the ranging and multipath resistance capabilities of impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) physical layers at a much lower complexity than coherent receivers. However, ED receivers are extremely vulnera ...

The existing tools for testing spam filters evaluate a filter instance by simply feeding it with a stream of emails, possibly also providing a feedback to the filter about the correctness of the detection. In such a scenario the evaluated filter is disconn ...

Cyclic Queuing and Forwarding (CQF) is a mechanism defined by IEEE TSN for providing low jitter in a deterministic network. CQF uses a common time cycle and two buffers per node output port: during one cycle incoming packets are stored in one buffer while ...

The optimal power-flow problem (OPF) has always played a key role in the planning and operation of power systems. Due to the non-linear nature of the AC power-flow equations, the OPF problem is known to be non-convex, therefore hard to solve. During the la ...

We consider the question of what performance metric to maximize when designing ad-hoc wireless network protocols such as routing or MAC. We focus on maximizing rates under battery lifetime and power constraints. Commonly used metrics are total capacity (in case of cellular networks) and transport capacity (in case of ad-hoc networks). However, it is known in traditional wired networking that maximizing total capacity conflicts with fairness, and this is why fairness oriented rate allocations, such as max-mi

In this paper we consider an Active Distribution Network (ADN) that performs primary voltage control using realtime demand response via a broadcast low-rate communication signal. Additionally, the ADN owns distributed electrical energy storage. We show that it is possible to use the same broadcast signal deployed for controlling loads to manage the distributed storage. To this end, we propose an appropriate control law embedded into the distributed electrical storage controllers that reacts to the defined b

We study the effect of Demand-Response (DR) in dynamic real-time electricity markets. We use a two-stage market model that takes into account the dynamical aspects of generation, demand, and DR. We study the real-time market prices in two scenarios: in the former, consumers anticipate or delay their flexible loads in reaction to market prices; in the latter, the flexible loads are controlled by an independent aggregator. For both scenarios, we show that, when users are price-takers, any competitive equilibr

Multicast is proposed as a preferred communication mechanism for many power grid applications. One of the biggest challenges for multicast in smart grid is ensuring source authentication without violating the stringent time requirement. The research commun ...

Due to environmental concerns and strict constraints on interference imposed on other networks, the radiated power of emerging pervasive wireless networks needs to be strictly limited, yet without sacrificing acceptable data rates. Pulsed Time-Hopping Ultra-Wide Band (TH-UWB) is a radio technology that has the potential to satisfy this requirement. Although TH-UWB is a multi-user radio technology, non-zero cross-correlation between time-hopping sequences, time-asynchronicity between sources and a multipath

We use recent network calculus results to study some properties of lossless multiplexing as it may be used in guaranteed service networks. We call network calculus a set of results that apply min-plus algebra to packet networks. We provide a simple proof that shaping a traffic stream to conform with a burstiness constraint preserves the original constraints satisfied by the traffic stream We show how all rate based packet schedulers can be modeled with a simple rate latency service curve. Then we define a g

We consider one aspect of the general problem of unicast equation based rate control in the Internet, which we formulate as follows. When a so called ``loss-event" occurs, a data source updates its sending rate by setting it to

f(\hat{p_n})

, where

\hat{p}_n

is an estimate of

\overline{p}

, the rate of loss-events. Function

f

(the target loss-throughput function) defines the objective of the control method: we would like that the throughput

\overline{x}

, attained by the source, satisfies the equatio

Self limiting epidemic forwarding is a method of epidemic information dissemination in wireless ad-hoc networks that achieves congestion control by limiting spread (i.e. the number of nodes that receive a given message) and injection rate in order to preserve a meaningful service. We analyze the performance of various methods for spread control: on one hand, the classical method, which consists in decrementing the TTL of a packet when it is transmitted, on the other hand, two methods based on ``aging", wher

We propose an Alarm Filtering Algorithm (AFA) for the fault management of an optical network that supports multiple failures and works in the presence of passive elements, that is, network elements which may fail but never generate an alarm (e.g. optical fibres). The algorithm provides a list of components whose failure explain the observed alarms. It avoids the use of failure probabilities, which are difficult to estimate, and does not need a global knowledge of the network topology. Moreover it also toler

We present a novel technique to detect traffic anomalies based on network flow behavior in different traffic features. Based on the observation that a network has multiple behavior modes, we estimate the modes in each feature component and extract their mo ...

We consider the problem of predicting user location in the form of user-cell association in a cellular wireless network. This is motivated by resource optimization, for example switching base transceiver stations on or off to save on network energy consump ...
