We present a concrete methodology for saving energy in future and contemporary cellular networks. It is based on re-arranging the user-cell association so as to allow shutting down under-utilized parts of the network. We consider a hypothetical static case ...

he traffic generated by multimedia applications presents a high degree of burstiness that can hardly be described by a static set of traffic parameters. We present a dynamic QoS negotiation scheme applied to a prototype application that provides temporized data transfer. The dynamic and efficient usage of the resources can be reached with the introduction of the renegotiable variable bit rate (RVBR) service, which is based on the renegotiation of the traffic specification. We describe and discuss the RVBR s

The invention provides a method for coping with an unintentional islanding of an electrical distribution grid within a Commelec-type framework for the real-time control of micro-grids, of Resource Agents (RA) controlled by Grid Agents (GA), comprising at l ...

Performance evaluation of the 802.11 MAC protocol is classically based on the decoupling assumption, which hypothesizes that the backoff processes at different nodes are independent. This decoupling assumption results from mean field convergence and is gen ...

We consider a closed social network with a certain proportion of liars who are trying to influence their peers reputation about some subject. Each persons reputation about this subject is based on both own direct experience and second hand information from their peers which cannot be verified. Given certain assumptions on when people believe or do not believe second hand information, we investigate the liars impact on their peers reputation about the subject. We present a mathematical model for this sit

We consider the transmission of variable bit rate (VBR) video over a network offering a guaranteed service such as ATM VBR or the guaranteed service of the IETF. The guaranteed service requires that the flow accepted by the network has to be conforming with a traffic envelope \sigma

Forward Error Correction copes with packet losses, but at the expense of an increase of the end-to-end delay. By failing to take this into account, existing error control schemes for audio often lead to end-to-end delays larger than 150 ms, which has an impact on the perceived audio quality. In this paper, we develop an adaptive error control scheme for audio which is delay aware, i.e. which incorporates the impact on the end-to-end delay in the choice of FEC. To this end, we model the perceived audio quali

Multiple software agents can be used to perform the real-time control of electrical grids. The control performance of such solutions is influenced by software non-idealities such as crashes and delays of the software agents, and message losses and delays d ...

The emerging measurement technology of phasor measurement units (PMUs) makes it possible to estimate the state of electrical grids in real-time, thus opening the way to new protection and control applications. PMUs rely on precise time synchronization, the ...

This paper focuses on the problem of controlling an ensemble of heterogeneous resources connected to an elec- trical grid at the same point of common coupling (PCC). The controller receives an aggregate power setpoint for the ensemble in real time and trac ...

We analyse and illustrate two approaches that we have developed for providing reservations to flows. The first approach uses the explicit reservation model: a traffic profile is negotiated between users and the network. ATM and RSVP are two examples for this approach. In this paper we describe our experience in the ACT project EXPERT (AC094) with the explicit reservation model in the context of ATM. We show that the integration of ATM in a TCP/IP oriented operating system is easy and does not require develo

We study a stochastic model of electricity production and consumption where appliances are adaptive and adjust their consumption to the available production, by delaying their demand and possibly using batteries. The model incorporates production volatility due to renewables, ramp-up and ramp-down time, uncertainty about actual demand versus planned production, delayed and evaporated demand due to adaptation to insufficient supply. We study whether threshold policies stabilize the system. The proofs use Mar

A huge increase in the amount of data consumed by smartphone users is becoming a serious problem for mobile operators. In three years, mobile data traffic in the AT&T's network rose 5000%. The US operators invest 50 billion dollars in their data networks e ...

Recent theoretical results show that it is optimal to allow interfering sources to transmit simultaneously as long as they are outside a well-defined exclusion region around a destination and to adapt the rate to interference. In contrast, interference from inside the exclusion region needs to be controlled. Furthermore, when a source transmits, it should do so at maximum power. Based on these theoretical findings, we propose a cross-layer design of MAC and physical layer and present a fully distributed, ra

We define the minimal interleaved regulator, which generalizes the Urgency Based Shaper that was recently proposed by Specht and Samii as a simpler alternative to per-flow reshaping in deterministic networks with aggregate scheduling. With this regulator, packets of multiple flows are processed in one FIFO queue; the packet at the head of the queue is examined against the regulation constraints of its flow; it is released at the earliest time at which this is possible without violating the constraints. Pack

Network coding is a new research area that may have interesting applications in practical networking systems. With network coding, intermediate nodes may send out packets that are linear combinations of previously received information. There are two main benefits of this approach: potential throughput improvements and a high degree of robustness. Robustness translates into loss resilience and facilitates the design of simple distributed algorithms that perform well, even if decisions are based only on parti

Current and future applications make use of different technologies as voice, data, and video. Consequently network technologies need to support them. For many years, the ATM based Broadband-ISDN has generally been regarded as the ultimate networking technology, which can integrate voice, data, and video services. With the recent tremendous growth of the Internet and the reluctant deployment of public ATM networks, the future development of ATM seems to be less clear than it used to be. In the past IP provid

The Internet of Things, emerging pervasive and sensor networks are low data-rate wireless networks with, a priori, no specific topology and no fixed infrastructure. Their primary requirements are twofold: First, low power consumption and, due to environmen ...

Upon an intentional or emergency disconnection from the main grid, a microgrid is expected to continue working in islanded mode. Thus, (at least) one resource needs to act as slack and compensate for power variations to keep the power balance, and ensure t ...
