Some impulse radio UWB (IR-UWB) networks may allow concurrent transmissions without power control (for example MAC protocols that do not use power control, or co-exisiting, non-coordinated piconets). In such cases, it has been proposed to mitigate multi-user interference (MUI) at the physical layer, but existing proposals for interference mitigation do not account for the multipath nature of UWB channels. We address this problem and propose a receiver that employs a combination of statistical interference m

MPTCP has been proposed recently as a mechanism for sup- porting transparently multiple connections to the applica- tion layer. It is under discussion at the IETF. We show, however, that the current MPTCP suffers from two prob- lems: (P1) Upgrading some TCP users to MPTCP can re- duce the throughput of others without any benefit to the upgraded users, which is a symptom of not being Pareto- optimal; and (P2) MPTCP users could be excessively ag- gressive towards TCP users. We attribute these problems to the

The traditional layered networking approach is not efficient in ad-hoc net-works. We are interested in finding a jointly optimal scheduling, routing and power control that achieves max-min fair rate allocation in a multi-hop wireless network. This is a highly complex non-convex optimization problem and it has been previously solved only for small networks. We restrict ourselves to symmet-ric networks with ring and line topologies, and we numerically solve the problem for a large number of nodes. We model po

We study a stochastic model of electricity production and consumption where appliances are adaptive and adjust their consumption to the available production, by delaying their demand and possibly using batteries. The model incorporates production volatilit ...

We study the energy consumptions of two strategies that increase the capacity of an LTE network: (1) the deployment of redundant macro and micro base stations by the operator at locations where the traffic is high, and (2) the deployment of publicly access ...

We consider the problem of routing in a wide area mobile ad hoc network called Terminode Network. Routing in this network is designed with the following objectives. First, it should scale well in terms of the number of nodes and geographical coverage; second, routing should have scalable mechanisms that cope with the dynamicity in the network due to mobility; and third, nodes need to be highly collaborative and redundant, but, most of all, cannot use complex algorithms or protocols. Our routing scheme is a

We have modified the popular Mbone toolVic (VIdeo-Conferencing) to use Arequipa (Application REQuested IP over ATM). The latter enables applications and in particular Vic, to request a direct ATM connection for its exclusive use and to directly control the traffic parameters of this connection. We have also implemented ATM Forum's UNI4.0 signaling and ITU-T's connection modification recommendation Q.2963.1, on end-systems as well as on switches. This implementation, coupled with the Arequipa mechanism, allo

A single failure in a communication network can trigger many alarms. We propose an alarm filtering algorithm for the management of an optical network using Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). The algorithm supports: (i) multiple failures and (ii) passive network elements that do not generate alarms but may fail. This algorithm will be applied to the network of the ACTS COBNET project.

This paper specifies a multicast routing protocol called Distributed Core Multicast (DCM). It is intended for use within a large single Internet domain network with a very large number of small multicast groups. We present how DCM can be used to route packets to mobile hosts in cellular Internet telephony, where each mobile host is assigned a multicast address. The benefits of the multicasting-based approach to route packets to mobile hosts are low latency and no disruption during handover.

Total Flow Analysis (TFA) is a method for the worst-case analysis of time-sensitive networks. It uses service curve characterizations of the network nodes and arrival curves of flows at their sources; for tractability, the latter are often taken to be line ...

We consider unicast equation based rate control defined as follows. A source adjusts its rate primarily at loss events to f(p) where p is an estimator of loss event ratio. Function f is typically the loss-throughput formula of a TCP source. In absence of loss events, the send rate can be also increased by an additional mechanism. We suppose the estimator is unbiased estimator of the loss event interval (amount of data sent between two consecutive loss events). Indeed, for the loss event intervals fixed to s

The ever-growing popularity of the Internet is dramatically changing the landscape of the communications market place. The two separate worlds of the Internet and Telecommunications are converging. The respective advantages of the two environments are being integrated to fulfill the promise of the information super-highways. In this paper, we examine the impact of the Internet on the main telecommunication architectures, namely the IN, the TMN and TINA. There are two new tendencies for implementing telephon

We introduce Pi-regulation, a new definition of traffic regulation which extends both the arrival curves of network calculus and Chang's max-plus g-regulation, and also includes new types of regulation, such as packet rate limitations. We provide a new exa ...

We present Asymmetric Best-Effort (ABE), a novel service to provide a throughput versus delay jitter service for IP packets. With this service, every best effort packet is marked as either Green or Blue. Green packets, typically sent by real-time applications such as interactive audio, receive more losses during bouts of congestion than Blue ones. In return, they receive a smaller bounded queueing delay. Both Green and Blue services are best-effort. The incentive to choose one or other is based on the natur

Wireless sensor networks are ideally built on low-cost, low-complexity nodes that have a low power consumption to guarantee a long network lifetime. These are all properties that can potentially be achieved with impulse radio ultra-wide band (IR-UWB). In a ...
