Water uptake of gas shales is commonly considered one of the most important factors responsible for fluid loss during flowback operations after hydraulic fracturing. Imbibition experiments cover a key role in this context to analyze the impact of several f ...

The purpose of the study is to characterize the main features of the anisotropic mechanical behaviour of a shale (Opalinus Clay), and to identify an anisotropic constitutive framework adapted to the response of the material under mechanical perturbations. Such a constitutive model is required for the simulation of triaxial tests which were done on OC samples. Firstly, the large quantity of available laboratory tests which characterize the mechanical response of OC has been analyzed. The test series provide

Research interest in the thermo-mechanical behaviour of soils is growing as a result of an increasing number of geomechanical problems involving thermal effects. This paper addresses various issues concerning the thermo-mechanical behaviour of soils. Start ...

Compacted bentonite is considered to be used for deep geological nuclear waste disposal due to its isolation properties such as low permeability, solute retention and swelling pressure. To ensure that these properties will remain favourable throughout the ...

Current models of the elasto-plastic behaviour of unsaturated soils contain important underlying assumptions that have not been tested due to a lack of adequate experimental data. To address this issue, the objective of this paper is to provide a comprehen ...

Microbial Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) is an innovative technique for soil grouting in which injected bacteria supplemented with chemicals lead to calcite precipitation in soils. A comprehensive research work is carried out to better understand and ...

The complete determination of soil water retention curve requires the sample volume to be measured, in order to calculate its void ratio and saturation degree. During drying in the pressure plate apparatus, cracks often appear in the sample altering its de ...

Energy geostructures (EG) are an innovative technology in the sustainable energy agenda that can be used to satisfy the heating and cooling needs of the built environment. EGs include several types of geostructures such as piles, walls, tunnels, shafts, se ...

In this study a series of swelling and breakthrough tests were performed on a target S/B mixture in proportion 80/20 in dry mass. Tests were carried out on specimen compacted to the same dry density but changing the osmotic suction of the pore water. The tests aimed at determining the relationship between the pore water composition, the swelling behaviour and the breakthrough pressure. The obtained results showed that an increase of the osmotic suction produces a reduction of the swelling capacity and of th

The presented paper deals with a constrained optimisation technique for the calibration of elasto-plastic model parameters in a rational and objective manner. The procedure consists in finding a set of model parameters which minimise the difference between ...

The geo-energy sector makes use of advanced technologies such as shale gas extraction, CO2 sequestration and nuclear waste geological disposal that rely on the exploitation of shale formations. Due to the great depths involved in these applications and the ...

The paper examines the thermo-mechanical volume change behaviour of Opalinus Clay in relation to different stress conditions and overconsolidation ratio (OCR) values and evaluates the impact of temperature on some hydro-mechanical properties of this materi ...

The paper presents the work carried out for the analysis of the hydro-mechanical behaviour of a volcanic ash in unsaturated conditions for the establishment of a landslide eary warning system (EWS) in a Costa Rican quarry. Rapid mass movements involving as ...

There is currently a lack of established calculation method for the geotechnical design of heat exchanger piles. Thermo-mechanical effects are ignored and large overall security factors are therefore applied. This paper presents a new geotechnical numerica ...

A method for producing a carbonate-containing species-rich, nitrogen-containing species-free solution from a urea-rich solution is proposed. The method comprising the steps of: providing a first reservoir comprising a first mixture including urea and a cat ...

Shallow landslides in Alpine regions frequently occur during heavy precipitation events or extremely fast snow melting processes. Early-warning is mostly based on simple empirical rainfall intensity and duration curves indicating probable critical climatic ...

Energy geotechnology provides low carbon, cost-effective and local energy solu-tions to structures and infrastructures, which opens a new era for the geotechnical engineering practice, by extending the conventional role of structural design to the ...

Current geomechanical applications imply non-isothermal processes of unsaturated geomaterials, in most cases following stress paths different than the classical triaxial compression often used in laboratory testing. Though the effects of temperature, sucti ...

This paper is an experimental and numerical investigation of desiccation and the associated cracking. First an elastic formulation of the hydro-mechanical problem is presented, based on an analogy that can be drawn with thermo-elasticity. Then, the results ...

With the increase in computational capabilities in recent decades, the possibility of modeling complex phenomena has continued to grow, inevitably increasing the number of calibrated parameters. Determining these parameters for complex coupled models can b ...
