Microbially induced calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation (MICP) is one of the major sustainable alternatives to the artificial cementation of granular media. MICP consists of injecting the soil with bacterial- and calcium-rich solutions sequentially to ...

Mechanics of porous media is the study of porous materials whose mechanical behaviour is significantly influenced by the pore fluid. This handout is devoted to the theory of deformation, strength, flow and multiphase coupling in porous media. The mechanics of porous media theory has become very important for many applications mainly because of the increase of human influence on the environment. Mechanics of porous media play an important role in many branches of engineering, including material science, biom

One-of-a-kind experimental and numerical investigation is provided in this paper about energy sheet pile walls: earth retaining structures that embed heat exchanger probes within piles for the exploitation of shallow geothermal energy. The study resorts to ...

Energy geostructures (EGs) represent an innovative technology in the sustainable energy agenda and are useful for satisfying the energy needs of the built environment. They are usually involving geostructures such as piles, walls, tunnels, shafts, and sewe ...

Carbon mineralisation in basalts is a promising cost-effective way to permanently store CO2 in view of climate change mitigation. In this work, the impact of carbon mineralisation on the hydromechanical properties of a basaltic sample is studied. Unlike pr ...

Permanent CO storage in basalts through mineralisation offers a promising solution for reducing carbon emissions and mitigating climate change. This study focuses on the impact of potential mineralisation on the flow properties of the basaltic material. Fl ...

Experimental geomechanics highlights that the mechanical behavior of expansive porous media is variable depending on the pore water chemical composition. These porous media are typically characterized by clay particles, whose activity (Skempton, 1953) (and thus propensity to expand) is itself dependent on the pore water chemical composition. Chemical-induced mechanical effects on both shear strength and volumetric behavior are highlighted in the literature (Di Maio, 1996; Castellanos et al., 2008). The phys

Shallow geothermal power represents an important energy resource for the heating and cooling of the buildings. Due to relatively low temperature levels encountered at shallow depths in the soil, between 10°C and 20°C, heat pumps are required to process the extracted heat, forming the so called ground source heat pump system. Different types of heat exchangers with the ground were developed in order to optimize the heat exchanges, from simple geothermal loops grouted in boreholes reaching depths up to a coup

Laboratory measurement of mechanical properties of gas shales represents a challenging topic in geomechanics due to their peculiar features such as heterogeneity, anisotropy, low permeability, and complex physical phenomena related to the hydro-mechanical ...

Deep geological repositories are considered as suitable solutions for the disposal of high level nuclear wastes. In several repository concepts (e.g. in Spain and Switzerland), bentonites are selected as the main component of the engineered barrier to be p ...

The decarbonization of the built environment requires rapid growth in energy storage solutions due to the intermittent nature of most renewable energy sources. This paper focuses on the efficacy of so-called energy tunnels (i.e., tunnels equipped with pipe ...

Several boreholes were drilled for site comparison of a deep geological repository (DGR) in Northern Switzerland. The main target of the exploration program was the >100m thick Opalinus Clay, the designated host rock encountered at approximately 450 to 100 ...

The fabrication of responsive soft materials that enable the controlled release of microbial induced calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation (MICP) would be highly desirable for the creation of living materials that can be used, for example, as self-healin ...

This study focuses on a specific problem related to the surface uplift induced by the injection of CO2 at depth. The adopted methodology includes the development of a mathematical model that incorporates the deformable behaviour of storage media and the fl ...

The Task 7 of the EBS task force is devoted to the modelling of gas transport phenomena in saturated bentonite. It was launched mid‐2016 with the following objectives: - To survey existing modelling tools for the simulation of gas migration in saturated be ...

Caprock formations, such as shales, play a key role in safe underground CO2 storage since they serve as a hydromechanical barrier that prevents migration of the injected CO2 to the surface. While their hydromechanical response is important to ensure their ...

In the last years, transport of gases in clay buffer materials for Engineered Barrier Systems (EBS) has been deeply investigated by many research programs in the framework of nuclear waste storage. At present state, the coupled hydromechanical models to an ...

Predicting the induced change of fluid pressure in an unsaturated porous medium during undrained loading/unloading processes is challenging because two different fluids (a liquid and a gaseous solution) and a mixture of solid particles are involved. The relative presence of the two fluids and solid particles in the medium of interest, their stiffness, and the initial conditions in terms of liquid and gaseous pressure can play a crucial role in dictating the fluid pressures to be expected at the end of an un

Energy geostructures (EGs) employ heat exchangers embedded in concrete geostructures, such as piles, walls, tunnels, and sewers. In this study, energy walls (EWs) are studied with an emphasis on the following objectives: (1) to understand the fundamentals ...

Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) systems are used as efficient hydraulic barriers in landfills for the disposal of hazardous municipal wastes. Along with geotextiles, bentonite materials are chosen as one of the primary components of GCLs due to their high re ...
