Differentiated services are a suitable solution to Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning in the Internet while the number of users keeps growing. The solution is suitable, because it scales well with increasing number of network users and it does not alter the current Internet paradigm much. In this article, we review the state of the art in this ÒnewÓ area, and compare some of the main existing differentiated services architectures. We outline the common solutions across these architectures, thus paving th

Secure routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks have been developed recently, yet, it has been unclear what are the properties they achieve, as a formal analysis of these protocols is mostly lacking. In this paper, we are concerned with this problem, h ...

One major concern in pervasive wireless applications is location privacy, where malicious eavesdroppers, based on static device identifiers, can continuously track users. As a commonly adopted countermeasure to prevent such identifier-based tracking, devic ...

A computer-implemented method and a distributed computer system (100) for privacy- preserving distributed training of a global neural network model on distributed datasets (DS1 to DSn). The system has a plurality of data providers (DP1 to DPn) being commun ...

Modern web sites commonly interact with third-party domains to integrate advertisements and generate revenue from them. To improve the relevance of advertisement, online advertisers track user activities online with third- party cookies. However, excessive ...

The article presents the first results of the CrySTINA project. We analyze and structure the security problem domain in the TINA-C architecture and present our approach to provide the necessary security functionality in the form of self-contained application-independent security services and security mechanisms as part of the DPE functionality. The DPE is assumed to be basically provided by CORBA products. Therefore, we introduce the CORBA security specification and investigate if and how the identified TIN

Location privacy is a major concern in pervasive networks where static device identifiers enable malicious eavesdroppers to continuously track users and their movements. In order to prevent such identifier-based tracking, devices could coordinate regular i ...

Wireless community networks that operate in the unlicensed spectrum have emerged as a low-cost alternative for providing high-speed wireless data services. By using WiFi access points that are provided and managed by community members, wireless community n ...

The aim of the present invention is to provide a method to detect misbehavior use of the IEEE 802.11 standard without modifying the standard itself. This aim is reached according to a method for detecting misbehavior in a contention based communication net ...

In mobile ad hoc networks, it is usually assumed that all the nodes belong to the same authority; therefore, they are expected to cooperate in order to support the basic functions of the network such as routing. In this paper, we consider the case in which each node is its own authority and tries to maximize the benefits it gets from the network. In order to stimulate cooperation, we introduce a virtual currency and detail the way it can be protected against theft and forgery. We show that this mechanism fu

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) rely on in-network aggregation for efficiency, however, this comes at a price: A single adversary can severely influence the outcome by contributing an arbitrary partial aggregate value. Secure in-network aggregation can det ...

We demonstrate that an interferer with malicious intentions can significantly degrade the performance of impulse radio (IR) ranging. The cicada attack we have developed can decrease the distance (degradation of service) measured by ranging algorithms desig ...

In military and rescue applications of mobile ad hoc networks, all the nodes belong to the same authority; therefore, they are motivated to cooperate in order to support the basic functions of the network. In this paper, we consider the case when each node is its own authority and tries to maximize the benefits it gets from the network. More precisely, we assume that the nodes are not willing to forward packets for the benefit of other nodes. This problem may arise in civilian applications of mobile ad hoc

The invention relates to Real-Time Remote Inspection of High-Resolution images and more particularly to coordinated storage, retrieval and transmission of digital images with different levels of resolution

We argue that the traditional notion of trust as a relation among entities, while useful, becomes insu±cient in ephemeral ad hoc networks. In this paper, we address the challenge of extending the traditional notion of trust to data-centric trust, that is, ...

Pervasive computing systems will likely be deployed in the near future, with the proliferation of wireless devices and the emergence of ad hoc networking as key enablers. Coping with mobility and the volatility of wireless communications in such systems is ...

There is a rich collection of literature that aims at protecting the privacy of users querying location-based services. One of the most popular location privacy techniques consists in cloaking users' locations such that k users appear as potential senders ...
