We present a set of simple techniques for key establishment over a radio link in peer-to-peer networks. Our approach is based on the Diffie-Hellman key agreement protocol, which is known to be vulnerable to the ``man-in-the-middle" attack if the two users ...

We introduce a model that allows of anonymous yet accountable service usage in mobile communication systems. This model is based on the introduction of a new business role, called the customer care agency, and a ticket based mechanism for service access. We motivate the introduction of customer care agencies by analyzing their role and emphasizing their advantages. We introduce the general idea of ticket based service access, present a categorization of ticket types and ticket acquisition models, and identi

This paper describes the specification of a management architecture allowing virtual private network (VPN) customers to dynamically modify the configuration of their VPN. The specification has been structured according to the ODP viewpoints. A special emphasis has been laid on how changes in the logical VPN configuration affect or are reflected in the underlying physical networks. As a result, an informational and a computational VPN configuration management architecture have been developed illustrating how

The following invention disclosure is generally concerned with transmission of data in congested networks and more specifically concerned with a fresh packet first technique of scheduling data packets for interactive applications

In this paper, we split the service management layer, as defined in the Telecommunication Management Network (TMN), into two sublayers, namely the service application management sublayer and the service network management sublayer. The former deals with managing the mapping of the non functional requirements into functional constraints over the telecommunication service of interest, while the second reveals the management details related to meeting the functional requirements over that service. At each subl

The emerging technology of vehicular communications (VC) raises a number of technical problems that need to be addressed. Among those, security and privacy concerns are paramount for the wide adoption of VC. In this position paper, we are concerned with pr ...

When striving for reliability, multicast protocols are most commonly designed as deterministic solutions. Such an approach seems to make the reasoning about reliability guarantees (traditionally binary "all-or-nothing"- like) in the face of packet losses and/or node crashes. It is however precisely this determinism that tends to become a limiting factor when aiming at both reliability and scalability, particularly in highly dynamic networks, e.g., ad hoc networks. Gossip-based multicast protocols appear to

The concept of event-based behavioral abstraction (EBBA) is shown to facilitate the Design For Testability (DFT) if the set of events is well-chosen. We provide a predefined set of events which, together with linear-time temporal logic, can be used for expressing behavioral properties in object-oriented distributed systems. This allows automizing several steps in the testing process: instrumenting the source code, constructing test-oracles and generating an observer. Taking an industrial example as basis, w

Training accurate and robust machine learning models requires a large amount of data that is usually scattered across data silos. Sharing or centralizing the data of different healthcare institutions is, however, unfeasible or prohibitively difficult due t ...

Channel allocation was extensively studied in the framework of cellular networks. But the emergence of new system concepts, such as cognitive radio systems, has brought this topic into the focus of research again. In this paper, we study in detail the problem of competitive multi-radio multi-channel allocation in wireless networks. We study the existence of Nash equilibria in a static game and we conclude that, in spite of the non-cooperative behavior of such devices, their channel allocation results in a l

Scrip is a generic term for any substitute for real currency; it can be converted into goods or services sold by the issuer. In the classic scrip system model, one agent is helped by another in return for one unit of scrip. In this paper, we present an upgraded model, the one-to-n scrip system, where users need to find n agents to accomplish a single task. We provide a detailed analytical evaluation of this system based on a game-theoretic approach. We establish that a nontrivial Nash equilibrium exists in

Significant progress has been made towards making ad hoc networks secure and DoS resilient. However, little attention has been focused on quantifying DoS resilience: Do ad hoc networks have sufficiently redundant paths and counter-DoS mechanisms to make Do ...

Traditionally, reliable multicast protocols are deterministic in nature. It is precisely this determinism which tends to become their limiting factor when aiming at reliability and scalability, particularly in highly dynamic networks, e.g., ad hoc networks. As probabilistic protocols, gossip-based multicast protocols recently (re-)discovered in wired networks appear to be a viable means to "fight fire with fire" by exploiting the non-deterministic nature of ad hoc networks. This paper presents a protocol th

Wireless social community operators rely on subscribers who constitute a community of users. The pricing strategy of the provided wireless access is an open problem for this new generation of wireless access providers. In this paper, using both analytical ...

So far, the problem of positioning in wireless networks has been studied mainly in a nonadversarial setting. In this paper, we analyze the resistance of positioning techniques to position and distance spoofing attacks. We propose a mechanism for secure pos ...

The goal of this paper is to present a multi-media telecommunication architecture based on ATM technology, which provides reliable and effective transmission of still and motion high resolution (1024x1024 up to 4096x4096, 16 or 32 bits/pixel radiological and pathological images or part of them. The peculiarities of such architecture are the following. 1) Provide Quality of Service (QoS) awareness by means of inter and intra flow synchronization mechanisms. 2) Provide mechanisms of reliable transmission of d

We present a scheme for secure and privacy-preserving communication in hybrid ad hoc networks. Our scheme enables users to secure communication and to protect their anonymity and location privacy. Our approach is based on frequently changing node pseudonyms and cryptographic keys, which enable users to avoid being identified by the locations they visit, or by the type of traffic they generate. We show how our scheme can be effectively used for secure and private routing in hybrid ad hoc networks. We study t

In multi-hop wireless networks, every node is expected to forward packets for the benefit of other nodes. Yet, if each node is its own authority, then it may selfishly deny packet forwarding in order to save its own resources. Some researchers have proposed to introduce an incentive mechanism in the network that motivates the nodes to cooperate. In this paper, we address the question of whether such an incentive mechanism is necessary or cooperation between the nodes exists in the absence of it. We define a

In all-wireless networks, minimizing energy consumption is crucial as in most cases the nodes are battery-operated. We focus on the problem of power-optimal broadcast, for which it is well known that the broadcast nature of radio transmissions can be explo ...
