Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) remain a major complication of diabetes mellitus, with significant human and economic costs. Plantar pressure (PP) is the most widely used surrogate to assess DFU risk. Existing PP measurement insoles are primarily designed for in-clinic assessments using external instrumentation to guide passive offloading strategies. However, reliance on brief clinical measurements limits their ability to capture real-world loading patterns, motivating the development of sensing systems capable

Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) based actuators have become ideal candidates for use in compact and lightweight applications. These smart materials have often been referred to as artificial muscles due to their high work volume density. In this paper, a flexure-b ...

Contactless power transfer using inductive coupling is a well-known way to transfer energy from a transmitter to a receiver without any physical link. The applications are multiple. In this paper, the design and control of such a system for a contactless battery charger is investigated. The behaviour of the battery turns the system into a non-linear one. A solution dealing with the compensation topologies which aims to simplify the control of the transformer without any additional power electronics is propo

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) in quartz watches is becoming more and more important due to the use of plastic materials and tactile sensors. The discharge can lead to different type of dysfunction such as a simple reset, a latch-up or the destruction of the electronics In this paper, only the reversible dysfunction is considered. Electrostatic finite element (FEM) simulation completed with analytical calculation are carried out. Spatial distribution of the voltages will be shown. Values of the discrete elem

Recently, the interest in haptic feedback is growing thanks to its ability to enhance the interaction with Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs). This research project is exploring the potential of machine learning combined with piezoelectric actuators to genera ...

Touch-screens have become the most common way of interaction between humans and machines. Nevertheless, the lack of rich haptic-feedback on most of the devices limits the quality and effectivity of the interaction. To develop novel haptic feedback generati ...

Sensorless needle position detection for the actuator of a textile machine is challenging because of its multi current levels used and the transient state when the current changes. A local regression method can be used to represent the variation of inducta ...

Tribology plays a crucial role in the design of mechanical systems relying on friction to operate. As an example of those systems, ultrasonic ceramic actuators (UCMs) are a type of piezoelectric actuators that leverage the non-linear relationship between friction and relative velocity to drive objects over millimetre ranges using ultrasonic microscopic oscillations of their crystal. The contact dynamics of those actuators are characterised by small relative displacements at high frequency, leading to accele

This paper presents an approach to design a contactless energy-transfer system to supply desktop computer peripherals. Energy is transferred using coreless transformers from an array of primary coils (placed on a table) to one or several secondary coils (placed under the peripheral). Knowing the geometrical structure of the coils of a coreless transformer, accurate calculations allow predicting the power that can be transferred to a load. By applying these calculations to one basic energy-transfer cell, it

Some applications require an energy transfer without contacts and wires. The mutual inductive effects between two coils allow to transfer energy to an electronic consumer through an air gap. This paper presents an analytical model of a coreless transformer used to design a contactless energy transfer from a platform to a notebook battery charger. By defining the geometric parameters of the transformer, the model is able to compute its magnetic parameters. It is then possible to get the electric quantities w

Plantar pressure plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of foot ulcers among patients with diabetes and peripheral polyneuropathy. Pressure relief is a key requirement for both the prevention and treatment of plantar ulcers. Conventional medical practice ...

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) are a type of smart material described as compliant capacitors. They show impressive performances as soft actuators, such as a high strain and fast response. Nonetheless, replicating natural muscle function with DEAs h ...

Including friction modeling in simulation can be challenging and requires time domain simulation, which is time consuming. We propose to separate the friction modelling from the FEA (Finite Element Analysis). The approach is defined for UCM (Ultrasonic Cer ...

Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) are a type of smart materials that reacts mechanically to heat. Due to their complex behavior, they are often used in a simple geometry such as wires. This constrains the output displacement of the alloy to a simple linear contra ...

Small scale ultrasonic piezoelectric actuators performance strongly depends on not well-known contact dynamics. Deep Neural Network (DNN) sees their use in physic simulation growing as their flexibility allows better performance especially when dynamics la ...

Artificial muscles powered by shape memory alloys (SMAs) or highly twisted artificial muscles offer promising alternatives to conventional actuators, particularly in applications requiring lightweight, compliant or biomimetic motion. However, these high-force actuators suffer from reduced actuation frequency due to passive cooling constraints limiting their widespread adoption. This paper presents the design, modeling, and experimental evaluation of a novel twisted and coiled SMA (TCAM) actuator. This actua

In this paper, the case of a battery charger for electric vehicles based on a wireless power transmission is addressed. The specificity of every stage of the overall system is presented. Based on calculated and measured results, relevant capacitive compens ...

Inductive Coupled Power Transfer (ICPT) is a widely used technique to transfer electrical power from a power supply to one or more load(s) without any physical link. Even with large airgaps between primary and secondary coils, a very high power transfer ef ...
