The MHD response and the penetration of a deuterium shattered pellet into a JET plasma is investigated via the non-linear reduced MHD code JOREK with the neutral gas shielding (NGS) ablation model. The dominant MHD destabilizing mechanism by the injection ...

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have found applications in many image processing tasks, such as feature extraction, image classification, and object recognition. It has also been shown that the inverse of CNNs, so-called deconvolutional neural network ...

We report the first experimental observation of the depolarization of the Thomson scattering (TS) radiation, a relativistic effect expected to occur in very high T-e plasmas and never observed so far in a fusion machine. A set of unused optical fibers in t ...

In situ, two-dimensional (2D) Langmuir probe measurements across a large part of the TCV outer divertor are reported in L-mode discharges with and without divertor baffles. This provides detailed insights into time averaged profiles, particle fluxes, and f ...

TCV experiments and novel theoretical studies have addressed key questions regarding the operational space of negative triangularity (NT) plasmas in view of an L-mode NT reactor, in terms of stability, performance properties and core-edge integration. We show that reducing the top triangularity (δtop) to more negative values induces an H-L back transition, confirming the direct dependence between H-mode existence and access to 2nd ballooning stability region. We also show that the X-point δ can prohibit H-m

A set of experiments was carried out in JET ILW (Joint European Torus with ITER-Like Wall) L-mode plasmas in order to study the effects of light impurities on core ion thermal transport. N was puffed into some discharges and its profile was measured by act ...

Starting from a standard single null X-point configuration, a second order null divertor (snowflake (SF)) has been successfully created on the Tokamak à Configuration Variable (TCV) tokamak. The magnetic properties of this innovative configuration have bee ...

Real-time plasma control systems are at the heart of operation of modern tokamaks. The control system of the TCV tokamak has recently seen a major upgrade in terms of its hardware and software components. Control algorithms are entirely programmed and test ...

Experimental apparatus and data analysis techniques used in neutral particle analyzer (NPA) diagnostics on the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV) are described. Two NPAs are used on TCV to measure the energy spectrum of neutral particle fluxes from the ...

The ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) programme, jointly run with the EUROfusion MST1 task force, continues to significantly enhance the physics base of ITER and DEMO. Here, the full tungsten wall is a key asset for extrapolating to future devices. The high overall heat ...

The First Mirror Test for ITER has been carried out in JET with mirrors exposed during: (i) the third ILW campaign (ILW-3, 2015-2016, 23.33 h plasma) and (ii) all three campaigns, i.e. ILW-1 to ILW-3: 2011-2016, 63,52 h in total. All mirrors from main cham ...

In a previous paper, a Self-Organizing Map had proven to be able to identify the regions of the plasma operative space characterizing the pre-disruptive phase at JET without relying on any a priori information. One of the strengths of this disruption predictor lies in its inherent self-organization capability. The Self-Organizing Map discovers non-trivial relationships and captures the complicated interplay of device diagnostics on the internal plasma states directly from the experimental data. Moreover, th

This work investigates toroidal momentum transport in type-I edge-localized mode H-mode plasmas in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak, focusing on the formation of hollow rotation profiles under strong electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH). Applying the established momentum transport analysis framework to a neutral beam injection (NBI) modulation experiment, momentum transport coefficients were inferred self-consistently. This was done for phases with dominant NBI heating and with additional strong ECRH, durin

The TCV tokamak contributes to the development of nuclear fusion energy with proof-of-principle experiments and by validating models that are used to predict reactor performance. In the next upgrade of the TCV divertor it is planned to test a tightly baffled, long-legged divertor (TBLLD), a novel concept designed to enhance power exhaust handling with minimal modification to the magnetic configuration. The project is guided by simulations using the SOLPS-ITER code that indicate that a TBLLD can improve TCV’

TCV’s operating regime with an X-point radiator (XPR) has been broadened by changing the magnetic geometry. XPRs have properties that could make them an attractive power exhaust solution for fusion reactors. These include the conversion of a high fraction ...

Plasma-molecular interactions generate molecular ions which react with the plasma and contribute to detachment through molecular activated recombination (MAR), reducing the ion target flux, and molecular activated dissociation (MAD), both of which create e ...

Within the 9th European Framework programme, since 2021 EUROfusion is operating five tokamaks under the auspices of a single Task Force called ‘Tokamak Exploitation’. The goal is to benefit from the complementary capabilities of each machine in a coordinat ...

During the first two years of operation, the TCV tokamak has produced a large variety of plasma shapes and magnetic configurations, with 1.0 less than or equal to B-tor less than or equal to 1.46T, I-p less than or equal to 800kA, kappa less than or equal to 2.05, -0.7 less than or equal to delta less than or equal to 1. A new shape control algorithm, based on a finite element reconstruction of the plasma current in real time, has been implemented. Vertical growth rates up to 1000 s(-1) have been stabilized

The physics of divertor detachment is determined by divertor power, particle and momentum balance. This work provides a novel analysis technique of the Balmer line series to obtain a full particle/power balance measurement of the divertor. This supplies ne ...
