The paper describes the operation and upgrade of the Heating Neutral Beam Injection (HNBI) system as well as the related infrastructure at the Tokamak Configuration Variable (TCV) during the last years. In 2023, the installation of new TCV neutron shieldin ...

Recent studies (Maggi et al 2015 Nucl. Fusion 55 113031; Maggi et al 2017 Nucl. Fusion 57 116012) have shown that on JET with the Be/W ITER-like wall (JET-ILW) in high beta discharges with high D-2 gas rates, the inter-ELM temperature pedestal growth is sa ...

Ohmic H-mode has been regularly obtained on the TCV tokamak. This paper describes the change in magnetic activity occuring at the transition, the coherent activity during H-mode, a brief description of the dithering phase, and the activity associated with large and grassy ELMs.

A 'standard', single null lower diverted discharge has been developed to enable continuous monitoring of the first wall conditions and to characterise the effectiveness and influence of wall conditioning in the TCV tokamak. Measurements over a period encompassing nearly 2000 ohmic discharges of varying configuration and input power show the global confinement time and main plasma impurity concentrations to be good general indicators of the first wall condition, whilst divertor target profiles demonstrate st

The TCV tokamak continues to leverage its unique shaping capabilities, flexible heating systems and modern control system to provide a stepladder approach for extrapolations of experimental results from different ma-chines to ITER and DEMO. TCV's configura ...

Runaway electrons (REs) are a concern for tokamak fusion reactors from discharge startup to termination. A sudden localized loss of a multi-megaampere RE beam can inflict severe damage to the first wall. Should a disruption occur, the existence of a RE see ...

A new set of carbon tiles, neutral beam heating optics and gas baffles were installed on TCV during thebaffled divertor upgrade in early 2019. The installation of the baffles allows a deconvolution of the roles ofmain chamber and divertor neutral pressure ...

The diagnostic neutral beam injector (DNBI) together with a charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CXRS) system has been used on the TCV Tokamak as a diagnostic tool for local measurements of plasma ion temperature, velocity and carbon impurity densit ...

A power-balance model, with radiation losses from impurities and neutrals, gives a unified description of the density limit (DL) of the stellarator, the L-mode tokamak, and the reversed field pinch (RFP). The model predicts a Sudo-like scaling for the stel ...

A new modular, digital, distributed feedback control system has been developed and installed to control the TCV plasma. With many more inputs and outputs, it provides the possibility to build control algorithms using far more information on the plasma state than previously possible as well as the ability to control many more actuators, including the multi-megawatt, multi-launcher electron cyclotron heating and current drive system. This paper provides an overview of the new control system, its integration i

Post mortem analysis shows that mid and high atomic number metallic impurities are present in deposits on JET plasma facing components with the highest amount of Ni and W, and therefore the largest sink, being found at the top of the inner divertor. Source ...

The TCV tokamak contributes to the physics understanding of fusion plasmas, broadening the parameter range of reactor relevant regimes, by investigations based on an extensive use of the existing main experimental tools: flexible shaping and high power rea ...

Numerical simulations explore a possible tightly baffled, long-legged divertor (TBLLD) concept in a future upgrade of the tokamak à configuration variable (TCV). The SOLPS-ITER code package is used to compare the exhaust performance of several TBLLD config ...

The energy confinement time of TCV Ohmic, L-mode discharges is observed to depend strongly on the plasma shape, improving slightly with elongation and degrading strongly as triangularity is increased from zero to positive values. The thermal conductivity of these plasmas is found to be independent of the shape. This observation, combined with geometrical effects on the temperature gradient and a degradation with increasing input energy flux, can explain the observed variation in the energy confinement time.

Full conversion from ohmic to runaway electron (RE) driven current was observed in the tokamak a configuration variable (TCV) following massive injection of neon through a disruption mitigation valve into a low-density limited circular plasma. Following a ...

The recently developed Monte-Carlo code ERO2.0 is applied to the modelling of limited and diverted discharges at JET with the ITER-like wall (ILW). The global beryllium (Be) erosion and deposition is simulated and compared to experimental results from pass ...

Parallel heat flux calculations at the JET divertor have been based on the assumption that all incoming heat is due to the projection of the heat flux parallel to the magnetic line, q, plus a constant background. This simplification led to inconsistencies ...

Selected set of samples from JET ITER-Like Wall (JET-ILW) divertor tiles exposed both in 2013-2014 and 2011-2014 has been analysed using Thermal Desorption Spectrometry (TDS). The deuterium (D) amounts obtained with TDS were compared with Ion Beam Analysis ...

Plasma start-up is typically achieved manipulating poloidal magnetic fields, gas injection and possibly auxiliary heating. Model-based design techniques have been gaining increasing attention in view of future large tokamaks which have more stringent const ...
