Thermo-optical and electro-optical (plasma dispersion) effects for silicon based integrated optical modulators are becoming attractive and effective solutions for telecommunications applications such as switching for programmable optical add-drop multiplexing for WDM. In this paper, a simple yet highly efficient novel electro-optical modulator device that exploits a SOI Schottky diode integrated in silicon rib wave-guide is proposed. Numerical 2D electrical (ATLAS©1) and 3D optical (BPM_CAD©2)simulations ar

This paper discusses a novel tag/reader system, based on the passive, far-field RFID principle, with megabits per second read capability at operating ranges of several centimeters. The system operates in the ISM band at 2.45 GHz. A maximum data rate of 4 M ...

This paper presents a fully integrated remotely powered and addressable radio frequency identification (RFID) transponder working at 2.45 GHz. The achieved operating range at 4 W effective isotropically radiated power (EIRP) base-station transmit power is ...

This article presents the analysis of the power efficiency of the inductive links used for remote powering of the biomedical implants by considering the effect of the load resistance on the efficiency. The optimum load condition for the inductive links is calculated from the analysis and the coils are optimized accordingly. A remote powering link topology with a matching network between the inductive link and the rectifier has been proposed to operate the inductive link near its optimum load condition to im

A low-power and low-voltage super-regenerative receiver operating at 1 GHz and implemented in a 0.35-μm CMOS process is described. The receiver includes an low-noise amplifier, a super-regenerative oscillator, an envelope detector, an AGC circuitry with sample/hold function, and a baseband amplifier. The die surface is equal to 0.25 mm2. The power consumption is less than 1.2 mW at VDD = 1.5 V. A 100-KHz saw tooth quench signal is used to achieve a rejection of -36 dB at 500 KHz from the central frequency.

A method and apparatus for a fast and automatic setting of the phase locked loop (PLL) output frequency that significantly improves linearity, locking range as well as spectrum purity, jitter and phase noise performances is disclosed. I n one embodiment, a ...

A new fully integrated two-stage operational transconductance amplifier-capacitor (OTA-C) sine oscillator circuit configuration using a 0.5 μm CMOS digital process is described. A simple linear impedance analysis is presented to predict the amplitude and distortion of oscillation. The accuracy of this approach is examined by comparing calculated, simulated and measured results. Transconductance tuning keeps the startup condition satisfied within the frequency range from 2 to 11 MHz.

This paper presents a closed-loop remote powering link for wireless cortical implants. The link operates from a single power supply at the external reader and delivers power to the implant adaptively under changing load conditions. A feedback information i ...

For the first time, a compact model for suspended gate (SG) FET valid for entire bias range is proposed. The model is capable of simulating both pull-in and pull-out effects, which are the two important phenomena of this device. A novel hybrid numerical si ...

A low-power transceiver for ISM applications in the 868-MHz band has been integrated in a 0.8-μm BiCMOS technology. The receiver part is based on the super-regenerative principle. The system includes two time-shared control loops, one for the selectivity and sensitivity control and one for the frequency control (PLL). The receiver with its PLL draws 3.6 mW for a sensitivity of -105 dBm and the emitter current consumption is 6mA for a 0-dBm output power. A 2.4-V operation voltage allow the usage of a two-bat

A compact carrier generation system enabling proper interoperability among quad-band GSM, WCDMA (FDD and TDD), and WLAN (802.11a/b/g) standards is developed. The implementation is achieved in 0.25-mum BiCMOS-SiGe process. The measured tuning range is highe ...

Recently there is an increase in interest for using super-regenerative receivers for pulse based communication systems. To receive a pulse using the super-regenerative architecture the pulse needs to be aligned with the zero crossing of the damping co-efficient (which depends on the quench signal) for achieving maximum sensitivity. In general, the pulse to be received is not aligned with the zero crossing of the damping co-efficient. In this paper a novel technique for an automatic alignment of the incoming

Tuning and high frequency capabilities and dynamic range performance of continuous-time oscillators and filters, using the weak inversion operation mode of a low-cost conventional 0.5 μm CMOS technology and multi-tanh linearisation technique are examined. Experimental results in the 1.6 to 19 MHz tuning range are reported.

A fast modulator for a dynamic supply linear RF amplifier has been integrated in a 0.35-μm CMOS technology. The use of this modulator with an external linear power amplifier (PA) allows to maintain its efficiency at a higher level than it would with the same PA supplied at constant voltage. The modulator is designed to follow rapid envelope variations at high efficiency without compromising the RF PA linearity.

A detailed analysis of capacitance behavior of high-voltage MOSFET (HV-MOS), for example, LDMOS, using device simulation is made. The impact of lateral nonuniform doping and drift region are separately analyzed. It is shown that the peaks in C-GD and C-GS ...

Low power impulse radio-ultra wide band(IR-UWB) receivers have potential application in the area of wireless sensor networks. In this paper the possibility of super-regenerative receivers for pulse detection is demonstrated. The super-regenerative receiver ...
