Solvent cast and compression molded composite films based on poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene), containing pristine and silylated BaTiO3 particles, were poled, and their electromechanical response (d(33)), their dielectric properties, and the cry ...

We have studied the polarization-electric-field hysteresis, the dielectric permittivity dispersion, the piezoelectric properties, the electric-field-induced strain, and the interrelations between these properties for bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) ceramics. The ...

The depolarization temperature T-d of piezoelectric materials is an important figure of merit for their application at elevated temperatures. Until now, there are several methods proposed in the literature to determine the depolarization temperature of pie ...

The electromechanical coupling in ferroelectric materials is controlled by several coexisting structural phenomena which can include piezoelectric lattice strain, 180 degrees and non-180 degrees domain wall motion, and interphase boundary motion. The struc ...

The role of long-range strain interactions on domain wall dynamics is explored through macroscopic and local measurements of nonlinear behavior in mechanically clamped and released polycrystalline lead zirconate-titanate (PZT) films. Released films show a ...

Bismuth ferrite, BiFeO3, is an important multiferroic material that has attracted remarkable attention for potential applications in functional devices. While thin films of BiFeO3 are attractive for applications in nanoelectronics, bulk polycrystalline BiF ...

Pyrochlore free Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 (PMN) thin films were prepared from alkoxide-based solution precursors. The influence of different seeding layers and chemical solution on the microstructures is shown. Dielectric, electrostrictive, and piezoelectric properties of the films were characterized in detail. Films show relaxor-like behavior, but with dielectric permittivity which is low (around 4000 at peak) compared to bulk ceramics and single crystals. Several parameters which might be responsible for this low

The dielectric response of hard (Fe-doped) and soft (Nb-doped) rhombohedral Pb(Zr0.58Ti0.42)1−xMexO3 (Me=Fe or Nb) ceramics was studied at subswitching conditions over a wide range of temperatures (50– 450 °C) and frequencies (10 mHz to 10 kHz). The result ...

This review discusses recent advances in understanding origins of large piezoelectric properties in some ferroelectric materials. In particular, it addresses the role of polarization rotation and monoclinic phases. It is suggested that the polarization rot ...

Sodium bismuth titanate (NBT) ceramics are among the most promising lead-free materials for piezoelectric applications. This work reports the crystal structure and phase evolution of NBT and Fe-modified NBT (from 0-2 at.% Fe) using synchrotron x-ray diffra ...

Microstructure, structural defects, and piezoelectric response of bismuth titanate (Bi4Ti3O12)(1-x) and bismuth titanium niobate (Bi3TiNbO9)(x) solid solution with x=0.05 and 0.2 were investigated. Depending on x and on the sintering temperature different microstructures and piezoelectric responses were observed. For a low content in Bi3TiNbO9 (x=0.05) and a high sintering temperature (1130 degreesC), a coarse grain size is present, the number of structural defects within the grain is small, and there is a

Organometallic lead halide perovskites are highly efficient materials for solar cells and other optoelectronic applications due to their high quantum efficiency and exceptional semiconducting properties. A peculiarity of these perovskites is the substantia ...

The influence of the uniaxial bias stress on the piezoelectric properties of tetragonal BaTiO3 and PbTiO3 monodomain crystals is modeled in the framework of the phenomenological Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory. It is shown that tensile and compressive st ...

Piezoelectric ceramics generate strain through the intrinsic piezoelectric effect, the motion of ferroelectric domain walls, or through field-induced phase transitions. The enhanced piezoelectric properties observed in morphotropic solid solutions arise fr ...

Thickness mode resonances in commercial piezoelectric ceramics have been characterised as a function of frequency by two methods. The first is based on a fit on the electrical impedance for the fundamental and the overtones. This method has been applied to a large number of PZT ceramic samples and frequency dependence for all the parameters is investigated, in particular for the piezoelectric coefficient e(33). The second is based on the measurement of the mechanical displacement at the centre of the surfac

Ferroelectricity has made a huge impact on science and technology since Joseph Valasek (then a Ph.D. student at the University of Minnesota) discovered it in 1920, a little longer than 100 years ago. Whereas Dr. Valasek's original research was motivated by ...

Piezoelectric materials produce a linear deformation in response to an applied electric field and are essential for precision-control devices. The conventional view is that polymers must be crystalline and possess remanent polarization after artificial pol ...

We report an intrinsic strain engineering, akin to thin filmlike approaches, via irreversible hightemperature plastic deformation of a tetragonal ferroelectric single-crystal BaTiO3. Dislocations wellaligned along the [001] axis and associated strain field ...

In this work, the effect of introducing tetragonal yttria-stabilized zirconia (TZ) particles in soft [Pb0.98Ba0.01][(Zr0.53Ti0.47)(0.98)Nb-0.02]O-3 (PZT) was investigated. Both microstructure and electrical properties of the PZT-xTZ (x = 0, 2, 5, 10, 20 vo ...

In bulk ferroelectric ceramics, extrinsic contributions associated with motion of domain walls and phase boundaries are a significant component of the measured dielectric and piezoelectric response. In thin films, the small grain sizes, substantial residua ...
