We present a method to measure continuous-wave ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra based on the core-level absorption of circularly polarized x rays. The technique is demonstrated by using a monochromatic x-ray beam incident on an yttrium-iron-garnet sam ...

The origin of (ferro)magnetic ordering in transition metal doped ZnO is a still open question. For applications it is fundamental to establish if it arises from magnetically ordered impurity clusters embedded into the semiconducting matrix or if it origina ...

We discuss a novel approach to measure the electron phase-relaxation length and femtosecond lifetimes at surfaces. It relies on the study of the spatial decay of quantum interference patterns in the local density of states (LDOS) with the STM. The method has been applied to s-p derived surface-state electrons on Cu(111) and Ag(111). The characteristic decay length of the LDOS oscillations is influenced by the finite lifetime, and thus reveals information about inelastic scattering in the two-dimensional (2D

The electronic structure of a Pb overlayer on Ag(111) has been studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We identify three p bands. While the p(xy) bands are sharp and closely resemble the corresponding bands of a free-standing Pb layer, the p( ...

We have studied Er(trensal) single -ion magnets adsorbed on graphene/Ru(0001), on graphene/Ir(111), and on bare Ru(0001) by scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. On graphene, the molecules self -assemble into dense and well -orde ...

We report on the magnetic properties of Dy atoms adsorbed on the (001) surface of SrTiO3. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism reveals slow relaxation of the Dy magnetization on a time scale of about 800 s at 2.5 K, unusually associated with an easy-plane mag ...

We use rotational excitation spectroscopy with a scanning tunneling microscope to investigate the rotational properties of molecular hydrogen and its isotopes physisorbed on the surfaces of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), grown on Ni(111), Ru(0001), and Rh(111). The rotational excitation energies are in good agreement with Delta J = 2 transitions of freely spinning p-H-2 and o-D-2 molecules. The variations of the spectral line shapes for H-2 among the different surfaces can be traced back to a

The atomic structure and composition of a catalyst's surface have a major influence on its performance regarding activity and selectivity. In this respect, intermetallic compounds are promising future catalyst materials, as their surfaces exhibit small and well-defined ensembles of active metal atoms. In this study, the active adsorption sites of the 3-fold-symmetric surfaces of the PdGa interrnetallic compound were investigated in a combined experimental and computational approach using CO as a test molecu

Iron atoms adsorbed on a Cu(111) surface and buried under polyphenyl dicarbonitrile molecules exhibit strongly spatial anisotropic Kondo features with directionally dependent Kondo temperatures and line shapes, as evidenced by scanning tunneling spectrosco ...

The interaction between the endohedral unit in the single-molecule magnet Dy2ScN@C-80 and a rhodium (111) substrate leads to alignment of the Dy 4f orbitals. The resulting orientation of the Dy2ScN plane parallel to the surface is inferred from comparison of the angular anisotropy of x-ray absorption spectra and multiplet calculations in the corresponding ligand field. The x-ray magnetic circular dichroism is also angle dependent and signals strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy. This directly relates geomet

The temperature-dependent damping of quantum-mechanical interference patterns from surface-state electrons scattering off steps on Ag(111) and Cu(111) has been studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy in the temperature range 3,5-178 K. The thermal damping of the electron standing waves is described quantitatively within a simple plane-wave model accounting for thermal broadening due to the broadening of the Fermi-Dirac distributions of sample and tip, for beating effects between e

A method is presented to measure both the barriers for intra-and interlayer diffusion for an epitaxial system with great accuracy. It is based upon the application of mean-field nucleation theory to variable temperature STM data. The validity and limits of applying nucleation theory to extract barriers for terrace diffusion are discussed in comparison to alternative methods like Kinetic Monte-Carlo (KMC) simulations. With this approach, a pronounced influence of strain on intra-and interlayer diffusion was

The magnetic properties of a Mn-19 coordination cluster equipped with methylmercapto substituents on the organic ligands, [(Mn12Mn7II)-Mn-III(mu(4)-O)(8)(mu(3)-Cl)(7.7)(mu(3)-OMe)(0.3)(HLSMe)(12)(MeOH)(6)]Cl-2 center dot 27MeCN (Mn-19(SMe)) (H3LSMe = 2,6-bis(hydroxymethyl)-4-mercaptomethylphenol) deposited on Au(111) surfaces from solution, have been investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The data reveal that in the submonolayer regime the molecules contain only

Aim: Atomic force microscopy nanoindentation of myofibers was used to assess and quantitatively diagnose muscular dystrophies from human patients. Materials & methods: Myofibers were probed from fresh or frozen muscle biopsies from human dystrophic patient ...

The reliability by which molecular motor proteins convert undirected energy input into directed motion or transport has inspired the design of innumerable artificial molecular motors. We have realized and investigated an artificial molecular motor applying ...

We report on the magnetic coupling between isolated Co atoms as well as small Co islands and Ni(111) mediated by an epitaxial graphene layer. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and scanning tunneling microscopy combined with density functional theory calcul ...

We describe the formation of lanthanide-organic coordination networks and complexes under ultra-high-vacuum conditions on a clean Ag(100) surface. The structures comprise single Ho atoms as coordination centers and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (from terephtali ...

Matter at the atomic-scale is inherently governed by the laws of quantum mechanics. This makes charges and spins confined to individual atoms-and interactions among them-an invaluable resource for fundamental research and quantum technologies alike. However, harnessing the inherent 'quantumness' of atomic-scale objects requires that they can be precisely engineered and addressed at the individual atomic level. Since its invention in the 1980s, scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) has repeatedly demonstrated

The observation of sharp atomiclike multiplet features is unexpected for individual 3d atoms adsorbed on transition-metal surfaces. However, we show by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism that individual Fe atoms on Cu(111) exhibit such features. They are reminiscent of a low degree of hybridization, similar to 3d atoms adsorbed on alkali-metal surfaces. We determine the spin, orbital, and total magnetic moments, as well as magnetic anisotropy energy for the individu

We report on a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the magnetic anisotropy of Fe and Co ultrathin layers on strongly polarizable metal substrates. Monolayer (ML) films of Co and Fe on Rh(111) have been investigated in situ by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), magneto-optic Kerr effect, and scanning tunneling microscopy. The experiments show that both magnetic adlayers exhibit ferromagnetic order and enhanced spin and orbital moments compared to the bulk metals. The easy magnetizat
