Managing existing civil infrastructure is challenging due to evolving functional requirements, material aging, and climate change. With increasingly limited economic, environmental, and material resources, more sustainable solutions for practical asset man ...

This paper outlines concepts using ultrahigh-performance fiber-reinforced composite (UHPFRC) to address structural deficiencies in modern fixed railway track systems of concrete, focusing on enhancing structural safety, durability, and fatigue resistance. ...

The monitoring of existing infrastructure has the potential to improve structural-condition assessment, leading to better asset management. Monitoring data, collected through load testing, help identify unknown model-parameter values, and this model-updati ...

Assessment of existing bridge structures for inherent safety level or for lifetime extension purposes is often more challenging than designing new ones. With increasing magnitude and frequency of axle loads, reinforced concrete bridge decks are susceptible ...

UHPFRC stands for ultra-high-performance fibre-reinforced-cementitious composite material, that is complemented by reinforcing steel bars to form a R-UHPFRC strengthening layer. UHPFRC “upcycling” has the goal to enhance the resistance and durability of deficient structural elements in reinforced concrete. It helps to avoid the still widespread and material- and cost-intensive practice of “demolition-replacement” of deficient reinforced concrete bridges. As UHPFRC “upcycling” often offers significant cost a

Thin ultra high performance fibre reinforced concretes overlays are suitable for rehabilitation of structures thanks to their enhanced properties. However, in such composite structures, restrained differential shrinkage cracking is an important concern. To ...

Riveted railway bridges are commonly considered as being “old”, having fatigue damage and are therefore replaced. While this practice should be by now obsolete by using novel engineering methods like structural monitoring, prolongation of the service durat ...

In January 2011, the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects (SIA) published a series of standards for existing structures. The standard entitled 'existing structures-bases for examination and interventions' specifies the principles, the terminology and ...

An experimental campaign supports a model named TransChlor for bringing liquid water moved by capillary suction and chloride ions into concrete. The principal objective of the experimental campaign is to represent conventional concretes under real conditio ...

This paper presents some applications of FRC in Switzerland and recent developments resulting from research activities carried out at Swiss university laboratories. The national recommendation SIA162/6 "Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete" is also briefly presented in relation to the practical use of this material in terms of quality control and design. Finally, some perspectives of the use of FRC in the Swiss market are given.

The fatigue safety of the reinforced concrete deck slab of a sixty-year-old steel-concrete road viaduct as well as the riveted steel girders of a 130 year old railway bridge was questioned based on the results of conventional assessment consisting in "re-c ...

An original concept is presented for the durable rehabilitation of concrete bridge deck slabs. The main idea is to add a layer of Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) with or without steel reinforcing bars over the concrete slab to cre ...

The article "An analytical inverse analysis to determine equi-biaxial tensile properties of strain-hardening UHPFRC from ringon-ring test", written by Xiujiang Shen, Eugen Bruhwiler, Emmanuel Denarie and Wanghu Peng was originally published electronically ...

The material UHPFRC is not yet used in the field of bridge construction regularly. The reasons are missing codes and allurements for innovation in the structural engineering. Nevertheless, UHPFRC has many advantages, which are significant compared to the u ...

Current infrastructure management frameworks typically involve replacing bridges at the end of their intended service duration or when significant structural deficiencies arise, resulting in high costs and environmental impacts. Novel structural-strengthening methods using ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composite (UHPFRC) have allowed the preservation of hundreds of bridges in several countries. Their service duration has been extended, and their performance has been improved to match

Operating and maintaining a bridge is a union of two dichotomous entities: the analytical civil engineer and the experiencing public. In a perfect society, the concerns of the former would be actively and completely supported by the later, but in practice ...

Structural Behaviour of Composite Elements Combining Reinforced Ultra-High Performance Fibre-Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) and Reinforced Concrete Due to their high strengths, high deformability and low permeability Ultra-High Performance Fibre-Reinforced C ...
