Plasticization of medical grade poly-L-lactide (PLLA) by addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG) with various molar masses has been evaluated as means of producing low stiffness matrices for bioresorbable scaffolds for soft-tissue engineering applications. A ...

Thermoforming of doubly-curved sandwich components will o er new design possibilities and cost-e ective manufacturing routes. However, the occurrence of folds and wrinkles in face sheets is directly linked to the fabric architecture and constitutes a process-limiting factor. Drapability tests have shown that knitted fabrics are less susceptible to wrinkling than woven preforms because their loop structure can more easily accommodate large deformations. In the experiments described here, a novel glass warp-k

The swelling and compressive mechanical behavior as well as the morphology and biocompatibility of composite hydrogels based on Tween® 20 trimethacrylate (T3), N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP) and nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) were assessed in the present study. The chemical structure of T3 was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and the degree of substitution was found to be around 3. Swelling ratios of neat hydrogels composed of different concentrations

Driven by the need for more cost-effective applications, researchers and design engineers of polymer composites are facing increasing demands for the development of faster and more environment-friendly processing methods. Rapid processing techniques require a better understanding and a more efficient control of phenomena such as heating, impregnation, bonding and solidification. Most of the new techniques promote non-isothermal and transient phenomena in order to achieve faster transformation of the materia

Dissipative materials are essential for mitigating impact in various automotive, aerospace, and sports equipment applications. This study investigates the efficiency of a novel hybrid iono-organogel in dissipating and absorbing impact energies. The gel con ...

The invention relates to a cross-linkable polymer comprising a base polymer comprising functional groups at least some of which have been reacted with a first organic molecule comprising a cross-linkable unit and with a second organic molecule capable of b ...

Bioresorbable scaffolds made Of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA) obtained by supercritical gas foaming were recently described as suitable for tissue engineering, portraying biocompatibility with primary osteoblasts in vitro and interesting mechanical properties ...

The aim of the present research has been to quantify the influence of different materials on the global dynamic response of a ski. The properties of the individual constituent materials were characterized as a function of temperature and frequency using dy ...

This paper describes the production of "green" microfibrillated cellulose-reinforced polylactide cellular biocomposites using a wet mixing technique combined with super-critical carbon dioxide foaming. The effect of composition on the morphology, density a ...

Bone is a natural composite construct, with a gradient structure going from a loose interconnected cellular core to an outer dense wall, thus minimizing bone weight while keeping a high mechanical resistance. Due to this unique and complex structure, bone ...

Photopolymerization is a common method to cure materials initially in a liquid state, such as dental implants or bone or tissue fillers. Recent advances in the development of biocompatible gel- and cement-systems open up an avenue for in situ photopolymeri ...

A process has been developed where multiple yarns of commingled glass and polypropylene are heated and placed to a desired geometry. The placed unidirectional (UD) tow is then encapsulated by over-moulding with glass mat thermoplastics (GMTs). The effects of both force (20 80 N), with an equivalent pressure range of 8 46 bar, and the displacement rate (20 100 mm/s) during tow placement on void content and flexural modulus were investigated for nine placement conditions. Placement rate affected the tow quali

The development of the interfacial bond strength as a function of bonding conditions has been investigated in two representative semicrystalline thermoplastics, isotactic polypropylene and polyamide 12. If one side of the interface is well above the melting point immediately before contact, more rapid effective bonding is obtained for a given estimated interface temperature than under isothermal conditions. This is discussed in terms of a simple two-parameter model for the critical strain energy release rat

The dynamic shear-thickening behavior of concentrated colloidal suspensions of fumed silica in polypropylene glycol has been investigated. Dynamic frequency sweeps showed that, for any given solids concentration, the complex viscosity at different imposed ...

The aim of this study was to test the association of fetal bone cells with ceramic reinforced PLA scaffolds for tissue engineering. As animal models, the craniotomy and the femoral condyle approaches in rats were chosen to follow cortical and trabecular bone repair processes. Key findings were the observation of complete bone bridging 12 months after implantation in skulls of PLA porous structures seeded with human fetal bone cells, and a strong induction of trabecular bone ingrowth in femoral condyles 2 mo

New thermoplastic composites with their composition tailored at the yarn level were proposed and successfully prepared. A specific processing method was developed for composites exhibiting different fibre and porosity concentration gradients. Mechanical pr ...

Emerging 3D printing technology permits innovative approaches to manufacture cartilage scaffolds associated with layer-by-layer mechanical property adaptation. However, information about gradients of mechanical properties in human articular cartilage is li ...

Damping is an important parameter for vibration control, noise reduction, fatigue endurance or impact resistance of composite materials. In this study, a micromechanical model was used to predict the damping of a composite material containing shear thicken ...

Inquiry-based labs seek to engage students in an authentic process of scientific inquiry, where students pose and invest scientific questions. The effect of inquiry-based labs has consistently been found to be positive [1]. In addition, the results of Furtak and her colleagues underline the importance of the teacher’s role in actively guiding student activities [2]. Inquiry-based teaching was found to have a higher impact when activities are well structured, with scaffolding to assist learners, and when stu

Supercritical CO2 foaming of amorphous and semicrystalline polylactides plasticized by blending with 20 wt% polyethylene glycol has been investigated as a means of producing low-stiffness bioresorbable scaffolds for tissue engineering. For a given set of f ...
