In open channels, a sudden rise in water elevation generates a positive surge. Positive surges are commonly observed in man-made channels (Bazin 1865, Treske 1994) and a natural occurrence is the tidal bore in macro-tidal estuaries (Tricker 1965, Chanson 2 ...

Flood management is more than ever an issue for dam designers and engineering consulting firms in charge of rehabilitation works. Piano Key Weirs are a new cost-effective type of spillway designed to improve dams discharge capacity. These structures are particularly attractive: they can easily be built on existing structures and enable very high discharge capacities. Therefore, Piano Key Weirs are nowadays studied worldwide. Piano Key Weir description involves a lot of geometrical parameters (more than 30),

La réhabilitation des barrages existants impose généralement une augmentation de leur capacité d’évacuation en crue. Dans de nombreuses situations, le PK-Weir (Piano Key Weir) offre à cet égard une solution compacte et efficace. La conception et la réalisa ...

As the need for energy is increasing, the challenges in the future are to operate existing large hydraulic schemes in more sustainable ways and to develop future water resources projects that are able to achieve a better balance between environmental and s ...

Low velocity and shallow-depth flow fields often are a challenge to most velocity measuring instruments. In the framework of a research project on reservoir sedimentation, the influence of the reservoir geometry on sediment transport and deposition was stu ...

The main goal of the 3(rd) Rhone Correction project is to improve the flood protection in the Upper Rhone River basin. In this context, the MINERVE project aims contributing to a better flow control during flood events, taking advantage from the multireser ...

The Gage II concrete arch dam shows some limiting constraints in its structural behavior when submitted to particular hydrostatic and thermal load conditions. Its sensitivity to low temperature has led to determine two different maximum water levels during winter and summer, respectively. Therefore, a new complementary spillway, composed by a PKWeir and a flap gate weir has been designed by EDF and optimized using a physical scaled model at LCH. The experimental tests have been carried out for different con

The Gloriettes concrete arch dam in the French Pyrenees showed a deficit of 80 m3/s for the new design flood of 150 m3/s. To address the problem, a Piano Key Weir (PKW) as an additional spillway was designed. The existence of a geotechnically unstable zone downstream of the PKW site, as well as requirements for environmental integration, did not allow a direct trajectory of the tailrace channel, but imposed an abrupt change in direction halfway. A stepped channel including an intermediate stilling basin was

After a major flood with a peak discharge of 177 m³/s in the city of Martigny (Valais, Switzerland) by the alpine river Drance in October 2000, the local authorities are strengthening efforts for the protection of the urban area. The Drance has an annual a ...

The Milibach River between Hasliberg-Reuti and Meiringen agglomerations in Switzerland has a limited hydraulic capacity leading to frequent flooding. During the 2005 flood event, large populated areas were inundated and damages exceeding many millions of Swiss francs occurred (Fig. 1). The deficit of the river flow capacity is essentially caused by a reduction of river cross sections due to local sediment deposits which lead to the overtopping of the lateral embankments

The paper focuses on the development of the hydraulic–hydrological model used to simulate water resources management scenarios in the Zambezi River basin. The main challenges of the implementation of the model are the scarcity of continuous reliable discha ...

River channelization and the construction of high-head storage schemes have been the basis of agricultural and socio-economic development in many alpine regions. One example is the Upper-Rhone River in Switzerland. The Upper-Rhone's morphology changed cons ...

Aspects of the MINERVE project are detailed including work on incorporating LAM forecasts into a hydro-meteorologicalical model used operationally in Switzerland. ...

Dans la phase d'étude de la création de plages et de l'agrandissement de l'adjacent Port de la Nautique sur le Léman à Genève, la complémentarité des modèles numérique et physique a permis de converger vers une solution optimale pour cet aménagement complexe.
