The strategy document « Vision Energétique de la Suisse en 2050 », established by the Center for Energy Policy and Economics of Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETHZ), reveals the first impacts of climate change and underlines the fact, that the increasing energy consumption will influence the climate irreversibly in next few years and generate tremendous social, ecological and economic impacts. The only way to guarantee simultaneously the security of local energy supply as well as to protect the envi

The Saint-Marc dam, owned by EDF-France is a concrete gravity dam built between 1926 and 1930. It is located near Limoges (France) on the Taurion River and has currently two gated spillways, one 7.50 m wide on the right bank and the other with two passes o ...

Résumé Dans le cadre du projet de recherche sur la sédimentation de réservoirs à faible profondeur, en particulier les sédiments en suspension, les paramètres suivants ont été étudiés: l’influence de la géométrie du réservoir sur le transport des sédiments ...

High-head storage hydropower plants operate their turbines during periods of high energy demand. The starting and stopping of turbines results in rapid fluctuations of discharge and water levels in rivers called hydropeaking, which are unfavorable from an ecological point of view. Morphological measures might help to reduce the fluctuations by increasing the natural retention capacity of rivers. With this practical background, the experimental investigations presented in this paper focused on the determinat

In the framework of the African DAms ProjecT (ADAPT), an integrated water resource management study in the Zambezi Basin is currently under development. In view of the sparse gauging network for rainfall monitoring, the observations from spaceborne instrumentation currently produce the only available rainfall data for a large part of the basin. Three operational and acknowledged high resolution satellite derived estimates: the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission product 3B42 (TRMM 3B42), the Famine Early Wa

Sediment transport plays a key role in the morphological and ecological value of river ecosystems. The present study explores the design of sediment management measures for a flood control and revitalization project in an alpine valley of the Swiss Alps. T ...

The overall dam-break phenomenon is currently well understood for reservoirs filled with water. However, many dams face serious problems of reservoir sedimentation. Thus, regarding risk management, the influence of a large amount of sediment in the reservoir on dam-break wave propagation is of great importance. Experimental investigations were performed to investigate the influence of the silting degree of reservoirs and grain size distribution on wave heights and velocities. Dam-break waves in silted-up re

The physical modeling tests for the rehabilitation of St-Marc Dam with a PKW are presented. A particular focus is put on the energy dissipation downstream from the PKW. The adopted solution is a leaned “ski-jump gutter” placed at the contact line between the downstream face of the dam and the natural foundation rock. It consists of a cylindrical profile, developed around an inclined axis and closed by a horizontal reach at the end of the structure. The aim of this solution is to guide the flow issued from t

In the framework of a research project focusing on mitigation measures for hydropeaking, a lateral embayment in riverbank is studied as a fish shelter. With the goal to find attractive configurations of shelter, systematic experiments with wild juvenile brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) were carried out in a flume supplied with freshwater from a natural river. The experimental is equipped with a rectangular lateral embayment. In order to follow the fish trajectories, their movements were recorded continuousl

Many alpine torrents convey regularly debris flows of high destructive hazard. After several granular events observed in Bruchji?s torrent near the Blatten village in the Swiss Alps, it was decided to manage the risk of similar debris flows by designing and constructing a control structure inside the torrent bed. Associated with a breach in the right bank side of the torrent, this control structure should divert part of the moderate and high debris flow events toward the original alluvial cone. Two differen

The Gebidem Dam located on the Massa River intercepts annually around 400’000 m3 of solid material. These sediments must be evacuated by annual flushing of the reservoir over 4 to 7 days. A trend for silting in the flushing channel was observed during the ...

With increasing of hydrological data records and the development of technologies for flood discharge estimation, as well as higher requirements on dam safety issues, a large number of existing dams require spillway rehabilitation to improve their hydraulic capacity. For such projects, the Piano Key Weir (PKW) is an efficient alternative. When compared to standard labyrinth weirs, this structure provides a longer effective crest length for a given spillway width, with the advantage that a PKW can be mounted

The river inflow in a natural lake with important suspended sediment load during floods, can impact water quality by mobilizing dissolved matters like phosphorous from deep to surface waters. Generally due to thermal stratification in prealpine lakes, the ...

Water retention in river plains is a common measure for flood routing. Discharge control is easily achieved by structures combining openings and weirs. Energy dissipation at the outlet is required to ensure the transition from supercritical to subcritical ...

The main goal of the 3rd Rhône Correction project in Switzerland is to improve the flood protection in the Upper Rhone River basin. In this framework, the MINERVE project contributes to the flow control during flood events by preventive turbine and bottom outlet operations from the numerous storage power plants existing in the watershed. For this purpose, a semi-distributed hydrological model was developed for the Upper Rhone River basin. It is currently operational for a real-time flood forecast in the Rho

Systematic experimental investigations have been performed under steady flow conditions in a channel whose banks are equipped with large-scale rectangular roughness elements. The purpose was to determine the flow resistance owing to such macrorough banks. The practical motivation of the study is to see how morphological restoration of banks in channelized rivers, such as lateral cavities, influences the steady flow characteristics. The experiments performed in 40 different geometrical configurations reveale

An experimental research of flow on different systems of stepped overlays for 18.6 degrees and 30 degrees slopes was conducted. In addition to define flow characteristics (Part I), the study highlighted the existence of an homogeneous aerated flow in which ...

The expansion project of the ‘’Port de la Nautique’’ and the creation of adjacent new beaches on the ‘’Lac Léman’’ in Geneva is currently under survey. In the conceptual and study phase, numerical- and physicalscaled models have been exploited at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). The objectives are to analyze the courantology and the wave’s field inside the protected zone of the harbor and their influence on the stability of the new beaches. The numerical modeling is driven by two models
