Printing gold alloys parts is a challenge due to the high reflectivity and thermal conductivity of these materials. Recent studies show an improvement in printing gold using the Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) process; however, the impact of the A1 -> L1(0 ...

Laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) is a versatile additive manufacturing process that can print geometrically complex metal parts for a variety of applications. However, poor control of defect formation during processing hampers its widespread industrial adop ...

Purpose – Since pulsed lasers are mainly used in selective laser sintering (SLS) – contrarily to selective laser melting (SLM) – only the exterior of the powder particles is molten while their core stays solid. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the binding mechanism between two particles of titanium powder. Design/methodology/approach – A dedicated experimental setup is used to isolate the particles. They are then irradiated by the laser. SEM micrographs are taken at each step and image analysis i

The significant computational expenses associated with simulating the Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) process often restrict the insights gained from modeling endeavors to specific combinations of process parameters, hindering broader conclusions. In this s ...

Laser polishing (LP) is a process that allows a significant reduction of the surface roughness of a metal workpiece via re-melting a shallow layer of material. However, the practical use of LP is limited due to the difficulty of satisfying the high surface ...

In the SLM process, one has to balance between power and scan speed. When small scan speed is used, thermal gradients are important and local solidification can lead to cracks. On the other hand, when high speed is used, the power has to be huge and phenomena due to heat transfer, like delamination or balling, arise. In this paper, we study different possible scanning strategies and we point out those leading to an homogeneous heating of the part until its melting point. The results are compared to numerica

In the SLS process, pulsed lasers are mostly used. Since only the surface of the powder particles is molten, consolidation can be achieved at much lower average power. Liquid bridges appear between the powder particles and are responsible for the bonding. The mechanical properties of the final part depend of the shape of these bonds. The goal of this study is to understand how the evolution of the liquid bridges (also called necks) is influenced by the laser parameters.

Tungsten carbide with microsized particle powders are commonly used embedded in a tough binder metal. The application of these composites is not limited to cutting tools, WC based material has been increasingly used in gaskets and other mechanical parts wi ...

The paper describes a new approach in controlling and tailoring residual stress profile of parts made bySelective Laser Melting (SLM). SLM parts are well known for the high tensile stresses in the as – built statein the surface or subsurface region. These ...

Selective Laser Melting (SLM) or Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) is the most studied laser-based additive manufacturing process for metals and alloys. One important issue in SLM is the time-consuming identification of a process window leading to quasi full ...

In the selective laser melting process, the scanning strategies have a deep impact on the final microstructures. In this paper, we point out the benefits of using EBSD techniques to characterize the scanning strategies on 18-carat gold samples. For a given scanning strategy, different microstructures and orientation can be achieved, due to the change of the thermal gradients. The results are compared with numerical simulations.

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) as an additive manufacturing (AM) technology has emerged as a powerful platform for producing multi-material metallic structures. The main drawbacks of using metallic powders for multi-material printing are related to technic ...

As SLS has now been established as a rapid freeform fabrication technique in a growing application field (aerospace, tooling, bone and dental implants etc.), one feels more severely the lack of non-destructive, reliable and recognised diagnostic methods for the mechanical characterisation of SLS parts (quality control).

This paper describes a hybrid additive manufacturing process – 3D Laser Shock Peening (3D LSP), based on the integration of Laser Shock Peening (LSP) with selective laser melting (SLM). The well-known tensile residual stresses (TRS) in the as – built (AB) ...

A method for manufacturing an object including the steps of forming layers by adding successive layers of material to form the object by selective laser melting (SLM), and inducing plastic deformation and residual stress into solidified material of at leas ...

In selective laser melting machines, continuous laser are usually used to melt the powder. The support structures, which are inevitable when dealing with elaborated pieces, necessitate a complex design by CAD in order to be easily removed. This paper propo ...
