This study describes the development and validation of a Radiance model for a translucent panel. Using goniophotometer data combined with integrating sphere measurements, optical properties of the panel were derived and converted into a Radiance model usin ...

This cross-validation study evaluates the performance and robustness of twenty-two established and newly proposed glare prediction metrics. Experimental datasets of daylight-dominated workplaces in office-like test rooms were collected from studies by seve ...

PV installations on flat roofs offer a wide range of design options, which are usually neglected in urban-scale assessments as these typically assume horizontal or other fixed arrangements. In this study, we analyse the influence of common design parameter ...

In this episode Andrew Clancy talks with Professor Marilyne Andersen. Marilyne is a physicst by training, but her first love was architecture. Her research has allowed her to develop a particular expertise in daylight, which has allowed her to work in a very architectural way in her various laboratories. She explores the effect of the built environment on daylight, and on how this impacts on human behaviours, mood and well being. In this conversation we range widely, exploring her early work, and how she ca

As a building physicis engineer specialized in daylighting and passive solar strategies for buildings, Marilyne Andersen provides an overview of her pioneering work in comfort and health implications of daylight, and on low-energy building technologies. With a clear interdisciplinary research focus at the interface between the domains of architectural design, building engineering and more fundamental science, she has opened new development and cooperation perspectives between fields otherwise as remote from

This paper details the results of an experimental study investigating the influence of daylight illuminance levels and indoor temperatures on objective and subjective performance evaluations, investigated through paper-based tasks and questionnaires, respe ...

New insights into the psycho-physiological effects of (day)light on humans. How much do these effects matter in our indoor environment, wherein we spend 90% of our time nowadays? Through this talk, Marilyne Andersen establishes connections between architectural, environmental and human-well-being concerns through the lens of our daily light exposure.

Although the integration of PV systems in the building envelope (BIPV) is an important factor for the acceptability of such installations, current urban-scale solar potential metrics only partially consider this aspect. As part of the definition of BIPV-su ...

This paper introduces an experiment using a virtual reality headset to collect subjective evaluations of rendered daylit architectural scenes. By varying sky conditions and view directions from a fixed position in architectural renderings, the authors coll ...

Information is the resolution of uncertainty and manifests itself as patterns. Although complex, most observable phenomena are not random and instead are associated with deterministic, chaotic systems. The underlying patterns and symmetries expressed from ...

We describe a methodology to parametrically generate several neighborhood design variants based on a master plan and comparatively evaluate their performance in terms of passive and active solar potential. Two case studies in Yverdon-les-Bains and Lausanne (CH) are presented.

: Occupants’ visual comfort in an indoor space strongly depend on the quantity and quality of the daylight inside the space which can be altered with the type of window glazing. In this study, we compared the visual comfort perception of participants with ...

How can we utilise technology to develop an improved mashrabiya while preserving its distinctly oriental character? Researcher find out.

Daylight is a dynamic source of illumination in architectural space, creating diverse and ephemeral configurations of light and shadow within the built environment. It can generate contrasting levels of brightness between distinct geometries or it can high ...

The ability to accurately and concisely describe the performance of complex fenestration systems (CFS) is essential to their effective implementation into the building industry. CFS are a diverse category of daylighting technologies that manipulate the lig ...

The impact of daylighting strategies on a building’s carbon emissions have so far been assessed mostly based on the building’s use phase and their resulting operational benefits, overlooking embodied carbon emissions of material production, construction, m ...

Product of a research cooperation between three Swiss universities - The Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne's school of Architecture, the School of Architecture and Technology in Fribourg, and the University of Fribourg - the Smart Living Lab is a research and development center for the built environment of the future. This high-tech structure also serves as an emblem of the cooperation's aim to translate academic research into actual buildings. A new series of books, entitled Towards 2050 will be sho
