Neighborhood form and building facade design are key drivers of indoor daylight performance. Architectural design at the neighborhood scale starts with massing scheme proposals and other design specifications including façade design are typically enriched ...

LIPID’s research areas range from new façade technologies to interactive visualization methods or climate-based performance metrics with a common overarching goal of promoting energy-efficiency and human comfort and health within buildings. Ongoing projects include new calculation methods, evaluation tools, instruments and metrics that aim to support this integration effort in the course as well as the lab environments. Daylighting is chosen as a strategic focus, being inherent to architectural design and o

This paper presents two different approaches to deal with the assessment of the BIPV potential in building renovation projects in urban areas, taking Neuchâtel as a representative middle‐size city of the Swiss plateau. 1) A building‐scale analysis aiming t ...

The use of natural light in buildings can affect our physiological and psychological health and has comfort, behavioral, economic, and environmental consequences.

Access to daylight in buildings is the combined effect of a building’s own physical attributes along with its surrounding physical context. There is thus growing interest among researchers to extend the use of building performance simulation (BPS) tools fo ...

Amongst the elements often overlooked in existing studies, dynamic movement and temporal changes in the content of views-out have been suggested to have a high potential to improve its perceived quality and occupant satisfaction. Moreover, in past and ongo ...

This paper evaluates the influence of light levels (i.e., illuminance) on subjective thermal perception of people, distinguishing between thermal sensation and thermal evaluation. The goal is to investigate whether reported effects found by other studies i ...

This study explores the effect of multiple bright light sources in the field of view on discomfort due to glare in office environments. User experiments were conducted in semi-controlled dim daylit environments mimicking open-plan offices, with glare stimuli varying in size, number, and position. The findings suggest that being exposed to several bright light sources do not necessarily increase perceived discomfort: a scene with two light sources that were both identified as glare sources by standard detect

Challenges ahead: how the conduct of research needs to change The emergence of scientific discovery at the interface of disciplinary fields is not necessarily driven by the academic system - rather, discovery happens despite it. Marilyne Andersen (EPFL) co ...

Substantial numbers of existing and new buildings are expected to survive long enough to experience perceptible shifts in climate ‘normals’ (averages). To predict a building's response to changes in typical weather, two inputs are required: weather data re ...

The discovery of a novel non-rod, non-cone photoreceptor in the mammalian eye that mediates a range of ‘non-visual’ responses to light has required reexamination of how lighting needs for human health are characterized and evaluated. Existing literature pr ...

Conventionally, building energy performance is evaluated through energy simulations using a single input weather file referring to present weather conditions. However, the analysis shown in this study demonstrates the high sensitivity of calculated energy ...

This study investigates how changing sky conditions in window views influence visual perception in a virtual reality environment. Over two experimental sessions, participants viewed 10 distinct window scenes, each recorded as real-time videos under clear a ...

Current trends in discomfort glare research have suggested the influence of physiological parameters on individual glare perception. To this end, we hypothesize that a specific ocular physiology characteristic, namely the macular pigment (MP) in the retina ...

This work reviews existing models of control patterns for occupant-shading interactions in office buildings, and studies their influence in terms of energy demand when comparing transparent façade alternatives. It starts by establishing a review of visual ...

Daylight provision to the indoor space is affected by different building elements that cannot be fully controlled by the users, such as the window size of a space. The dimensions of the fenestration not only affect the lighting levels, but they also affect ...

User calibrated digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras are being used in visual comfort and especially for glare evaluations as affordable alternatives to high-end luminance cameras calibrated by the manufacturer itself. While the typical way for a user ...

This study presents the results of a monitoring campaign aiming to further our understanding of occupants' behavior regarding the manual control of electric lighting in combination with shading control. It was performed on eight single-occupied offices in ...
