Natural light greatly impacts how a building is experienced by its occupants. It affects their well-being, notably from their health and biological clock perspectives, but also their perceived visual and thermal comfort, or their emotional response. If we want to support the design of places of delightful – and daylightful – living, we must bring these multifaceted considerations to become integral drivers of the creative process. This lecture will explore current research efforts aiming towards a deeper in

Many daylighting applications require a precise knowledge of the directional transmission features of advanced fenestration materials. These photometric properties are described by a bi-directional transmission distribution function (BTDF), whose experimental assessment requires an appropriate equipment. A novel bi-directional photogoniometer, based on digital imaging techniques, has been designed and developed for that purpose. The main advantages of this device are the significant reduction of the time re

Komorebi, the dappled sunlight filtering through trees, offers restorative benefits in outdoor and indoor environments. While studies have examined its presence, movement, and changes in illuminance, a comprehensive understanding of its dynamic properties remains largely unexplored. This study develops a framework to quantify the spatial and temporal characteristics of Komorebi patterns. The methodology involves collecting Komorebi scenes, extracting their temporal and spatial features, and creating a multi

Integrative lighting design aims to support human health and wellbeing by considering the visual and nonvisual effects light has on building occupants. Given that nonvisual responses depend on the amount and pattern of light received at the eye over time, ...

This paper introduces an interactive web-based visualizer for multi-metric daylight simulation results, named OCUVIS. It is able to display simulation-based results for a diverse range of ocular human-centric metrics such as non-visual health potential (nv ...

High Performance Buildings (HPB), including Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs) and nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB) are emerging as an important market in Europe and around the world. However, there are very few studies that aim to model the process of H ...

Designing the buildings that facilitate optimum utilization of daylight is desirable for its many benefits [1], [2] yet challenging due to other intrinsic properties of daylight responsible for over-heating and discomfort glare [3]. Discomfort glare has be ...

Our exposure to light has a key role in regulating our biological clock through a dedicated photoreceptor present in the human eye. Increased awareness to its criticality when it comes to human well-being is urgently needed, as this criticality is potentially greatest in dense urban environments, though it effectively applies to any inhabitable area in the world.

This study investigates the joint impact of façade geometry and associated sunlight patterns on occupant subjective perception and physiological responses through a novel experimental method coupling physically-based simulations shown in virtual reality wi ...

For a given view content, how well a view can be seen through different facade layers, or 'view visibility', depends on both the properties of the facade and the incident lighting. This dependency makes view visibility challenging to measure and quantify, which makes it difficult to understand how the benefits of a view through a window may be preserved by partially occluding facade layers. With the objective of relating the optical properties of different dynamic shading systems to what will be visible thr

Current view representation methods in VR predominantly rely on static photographs and tone-mapping operators without temporal variations, limiting the exploration of dynamic features in a view. This study presents an alternative workflow to capture dynamic daylit views in VR by utilizing real-time videos and the camera's automatic tone-mapping procedures. Preliminary results from our previous pilot study demonstrated that the combination of real-time videos and a scale model provides perceptually accurate

This presentation will explore the multifaceted nature of daylight performance in architectural spaces by discussing ongoing research regarding the dynamics of daylighting performance considering three interpretations of “well-being” in a space: as a human inhabitant of a living space, as a user of a (work)space, and as a witness of a delightful space.

It is well known that a building's energy performance (heating and artificial lighting) and the comfort of occupants are very strongly correlated with a building envelope’s access to the sun and its ability to harness that resource. We need to determine how the climate interacts with the built environment, how buildings influence each other, and how the indoor environment is impacted by these. In addition, in order to achieve any objectives related to sustainability, it is far more effective to influence bu

To embed the diversity and variability of human needs as foundational elements of daylighting design and put human occupants back at the core of the building question, we need to reach out to fundamental discoveries from neuroscience, biology and other fields, which will bring new insights and a deeper understanding of how we interact with our environment. The multiplicity and variability of our needs regarding (day)light exposure have been a topic of investigation for years now in photobiology and psychoph

A significant corpus of research has shown that occupant behaviour is a key factor of uncertainty when predicting building energy use. Building occupants affect energy use directly and indirectly by regulating their indoor environment according to their co ...

With the growing awareness about ipRGC-influenced light (IIL) responses, design applications related to these responses are flourishing. To compare design options and optimize lighting conditions for building occupants, lighting simulations are typically u ...
