Background Visual impairment (VI) significantly impacts quality of life, particularly in autonomous pedestrian navigation. Limitations in independent navigation lead to frustration, diminished confidence, and risks to bodily integrity for individuals with ...

Low- and middle-income countries suffer from excessive accumulation of electronic waste (e-waste), partly owing to a lack of recycling infrastructure and relevant policy frameworks, which can lead to significant toxic exposure of the surrounding population ...

Technologies that have been designed for use in high-income countries often fail to deliver their full potential when transposed to Low and Middle-Income Contexts (LMICs). The health sector is a case in point, as medical devices, whether donated or purchased, are generally short lived in those contexts. The mismatch between needs and available solutions originates from the inadequacy of both the technology and the business models. Essential medical technologies such as oxygen concentrators, neonatal incubat

This paper describes the development of a novel medical x-ray imaging system adapted to the needs and constraints of low- and middle-income countries. The developed system is based on an indirect conversion chain: a scintillator plate produces visible ligh ...

Access to sufficient water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services is a crucial requirement for patients during therapy and general well-being in the hospital. However, in low- and middle-income countries, these services are often inadequate, resulting in ...

Background: Computer-aided detection and diagnosis (CAD) systems can enhance the objectivity of visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA), which is widely used in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) for cervical cancer detection. VIA's reliance on subj ...

The issues of forced displacement and energy for sustainable development are convergent: an estimated 90% of displaced people globally have no access to electricity, while 85% of refugees are hosted in developing countries. However, few tools to plan and d ...

Despite scientific and technological advances in the field of assistive technology (AT) for people with visual impairment (VI), technological designs are frequently based on a poor understanding of the physical and social context of use, resulting in devic ...

Background The common causes of the 1.1 million newborn deaths in sub-Saharan Africa are birth asphyxia and trauma, severe infections, and complications of prematurity. Hypothermia is also a major threat to newborn survival. Three-quarters of newborn death ...

Recommendations for storage of most vaccines imply a continuous exposure to a temperature range between 0 degrees C and 10 degrees C, from the production to the administration to beneficiaries. According to the World Health Organization, more than 50% of v ...

A composite multi-layer textile (1), comprising at least one nanofibre layer (11) with nanofibres with diameters below 100nm and one support layer (12) with microfibres with diameters below three microns, wherein the layers (11, 12) were produced by electr ...

Humanitarian actors involved in physical rehabilitation, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), usually provide their beneficiaries with lower-limb prostheses comprising Solid Ankle Cushion Heel (SACH) feet as these are considered app ...

The implementation of non-user-centered design is sometimes effective for traditionally mass-produced items; however, these methods do not take into account local needs, resources, and cultures, and the history of individual people and communities in low- ...

Vaccines need to be continuously stored between 2°C to 8°C, from their production to administration to beneficiaries. Every year, more than 25% of vaccines are wasted. One of the main reasons for this wastage is the lack of cold chain continuity in low-inc ...

This work presents an embedded solution for detecting and classifying head-level objects using stereo vision to assist blind individuals. A custom dataset was created, featuring five classes of head-level objects, selected based on a survey of visually imp ...

Neonatal death represents a major burden in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where the main conditions triggering mortality, such as prematurity, labor complications, infections, and respiratory distress syndrome, are frequently worsened by hypothermia, which dra ...

The invention relates to a medical detector. The medical detector is characterised in that it comprises an antidiffusion grid secured to the detector and in that it comprises an antidiffusion grid mounted on the detector such that it can move between an ac ...

Increasing numbers of collaborations between the humanitarian and academic sector should have led to a significant increase in the amount of quality technology reaching the field and having a scaled impact. It has not. Following on from research with key stakeholders in these collaborations, we lay out the key reasons why there is often such a disconnect between high-level strategic intentions, and practical implementation. These are broken down into misunderstandings over: resources; deployment strategies;
