This work aims to develop a scalable surrogate modelling framework for robust multidisciplinary design optimisation (RMDO) in complex engineering systems. Focusing on gas-bearing supported rotors, it addresses the need to maintain system performance under ...

Small-scale oil-free turbocompressors driven by high-speed electric motors and supported on refrigerant vapor bearings represent a promising technology to increase the performance of domestic heat pumps. Gas bearings enable high rotational speeds with low ...

As vehicles become more automated in the pursuit of comfort and safety, the human-machine interface must adapt to accommodate the intent of both driver and automation. The concept of haptic shared control steering allows lateral control of the vehicle to b ...

For low-emission, small-scale combined heat and power generation, integrating a biomass gasifier with a downstream solid oxide fuel cell system is very promising due to their similar operating conditions in terms of temperatures and pressures. This match a ...

The dynamic behavior of spiral-grooved gas bearing supported four degrees-of-freedom (DOF) rotors is investigated by means of linearized bearing force coefficients and full time-integrated transient analysis. The transient method consists of a state-space ...

In this paper, the influence of tip clearance on the performance of small-scale turbopumps is studied numerically on extensive parameter ranges suitable for organic Rankine cycle applications. A novel and fully parameterized design model is developed and u ...

This research introduces an automated methodology for visualizing gas-bearing supported turbocompressor designs utilizing CadQuery 2, a scripting Computer-Aided Design (CAD) platform. This innovative approach simplifies the traditional design process, whic ...

A finite groove approach (FGA), based on the finite element method (FEM), is used for analyzing the static and dynamic behavior of spiral-grooved aerodynamic journal bearings at different eccentricities, number of grooves, and compressibility numbers. The ...

An analysis of single-stage centrifugal compressors supported on dynamic, gas lubricated bearings for driving vapor compression cycles suggests that the maximum feasible compressor power is limited, primarily by the bearing load capacity, in the range from ...

The Laboratory for Applied Mechanical Design (LAMD) designed, manufactured, and experimentally tested a novel recirculation fan for a 10 kWe solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The fan uses oil-free bearings, more specifically herringbone-grooved journal and spi ...

The forced response of rigid rotors, supported by herringbone-grooved gas journal bearings are investigated numerically and experimentally. The rotor configurations are varied by using end cylinders, attached at both sides of the shaft. Three rotors with d ...

Ultra-compact and fast spinning turbomachinery is a key technology to increase performance of domestic heating applications and to address decentralization of power and heat as a consequence of the rise of renewable energy sources. Recently, a heat pump us ...

Generic models are proposed to evaluate the skin friction coefficient acting on enclosed rotating disks and cylinders under various flow regimes. In particular, a model taking into account the inner radius of the disk is developed. The models are compared ...

While the global fuel utilization of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is limited by the stack aging rate, the fuel excess is typically used in a burner, and thus limiting the system electrical efficiency. Further, natural-gas-fueled SOFCs require treated wat ...

The design of an oil free turbocharger supported on herringbone grooved gas bearing was formulated as a multi-objective problem, which was solved by coupling a reduced order parametric model for gas bearing supported rotors with an evolutionary algorithm. ...

Engineering accreditation bodies express a strong consensus that in addition to technical and scientific skills, engineering education also needs to promote the development of professional skills. In general, team-based projects are considered to be valuab ...

A co-rotating scroll machine operable as compressor or expander, comprises a transmission and guidance mechanism (9,10) for first and second scroll plates (7,8), having three transmission and guidance units (9,10) uniformly distributed around the scroll pl ...

Gas foil bearings (GFBs) are a key enabling technology for high-speed turbomachinery. The manufacturing of GFBs relies mainly on sheet metal forming techniques in order to conceive the compliant structure (e.g., bump foil) and the top foil. Such techniques ...

The Narrow Groove Theory (NGT) is commonly used to simulate and design grooved gas bearing. However, measurements of dynamic force coefficients of Herringbone Grooved Journal Bearings (HGJBs) is missing, hence the validation historic NGT has never been per ...
