Today water bodies are suffering from numerous anthropogenic impacts. One of the key players is urban drainage. The directive STORM published by the VSA in 2007 proposes a procedure for an immission oriented strategy for remediation of urban drainage. At the same time the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) is developing with the Swiss Federal Institute for Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag) a new procedure for the assessment of rivers and streams in Switzerland, the Modular Stepwise Procedure (MS

This book is divided into six additional chapters: Chapter 2 deals with the agricultural source of micropollutants; Chapter 3 with the urban source of micropollutants; Chapter 4 with lake circulation; Chapter 5 with the influence of a wastewater treatment plant on a bay; Chapter 6 with the input of sediments and their transport in a bay; and Chapter 7 with the risk assessment of the mixture of the compounds present in lake water. A last chapter (8) synthesizes the main findings and presents perspectives for

Urban stormwater is an important source of detrimental impacts for receiving waters. Discharges from separated or combined sewer systems are recognized as a major contamination input to the environment. Moreover, these discharges may impact the morphological aspect of receiving waters, like rivers and streams. But these impacts are difficult to handle. First, precipitation is the main driving force of the problem and has stochastic features, which must be taken into account. Second, some variables and param

Combined sewer overflows and stormwater discharges represent an important source of contamination to the environment. However, the harsh environment inside sewers and particular hydraulic conditions during rain events reduce the reliability of traditional ...

Among emerging pollutants found in surface and ground waters, pharmaceuticals are currently receiving a particular interest. There are several physico/chemical parameters that could describe the fate of pharmaceuticals in the environment, so as their toxicity for ecosystems and human health. The idea is to create an integrated parameter that would relate of the relative influence of these physico/chemical characteristics. Potential impact of pharmaceuticals on the environment could be then ranked using this

There is increasing concern about environmental pollution by diffuse emissions of various environmental hazards emitted by transportation activities. For the first time substances released by railways to the environment were investigated. We considered the ...

Significant quantities of antibiotics are used in all parts of the globe to treat diseases with bacterial origins. After ingestion, antibiotics are excreted by the patient and transmitted in due course to the aquatic environment. This study examined tempor ...

Anthropogenic chemical contaminants are found routinely in our water resources. Although most of these compounds are usually present at low concentrations, they are of concern due to their ecotoxicity, antibacterial resistance and potential harm to human h ...

Municipal wastewaters are contaminated by a wide range of chemicals, from surfactants to heavy metals, including pharmaceutical residues, personal care products, various household chemicals, and biocides/pesticides. Their release into the environment, wher ...

Sampling is a key step in the analysis of chemical compounds. It is particularly important in the environmental field, for example for wastewater effluents, wet-weather discharges or streams in which the flows and concentrations vary greatly over time. In ...

Many organic micropollutants present in wastewater, such as pharmaceuticals and pesticides, are poorly removed in conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). To reduce the release of these substances into the aquatic environment, advanced treatments are necessary and may be soon mandatory in Switzerland. Two advanced treatments were tested in pilot systems over more than one year at the municipal WWTP of Lausanne, Switzerland. The first pilot involves the ozonation of the effluent to oxidize organic su

In Switzerland, a new standard for wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) – 80% reduction of micropollutants from raw sewage – is under consideration. Five substances have been proposed as target compounds: Diclofenac, Carbamazepine, Mecoprop, Sulfamethoxazole and Benzotriazole. Although very efficient and reliable, advanced treatment technologies for traditional WWTPs – such as ozonation – are expensive and difficult to implement on relatively small WWTPs, of which there are many in Switzerland. To tackle this

Water contamination is an important environmental concern underlining the need for reliable real-time information on contaminant concentrations in natural waters. Here, a new non-contact UV-Vis spectroscopic approach for monitoring contaminants in water, a ...

Many organic micropollutants present in wastewater, such as pharmaceuticals and pesticides, are poorly removed in conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). To reduce the release of these substances into the aquatic environment, advanced wastewater treatments are necessary. In this context, two large-scale pilot advanced treatments were tested in parallel over more than one year at the municipal WWTP of Lausanne, Switzerland. The treatments were: i) oxidation by ozone followed by sand filtration (SF)

Sediment represents an important compartment in surface waters. It constitutes a habitat or spawning site for many organisms and is an essential trophic resource for higher level organisms. It can be impacted by anthropogenic activities, particularly throu ...

The aim of this study was to assess the most relevant time scales of antibiotics concentration variations at the sewage treatment plant (STP) inlet and to create a model for the simulation of short-term concentration variations. During one year six antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, metronidazole, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, and trimethoprim) were being successfully and repeatedly measured at the inlet of the STP of Vidy in Lausanne. The campaigns were arranged that way that seasonal, daily and hourly mas

Most popular urban hydrological model used in research and engineering (e.g. MOUSE, SWMM, MUSIC,P8) are spatially distributed with linknode drainage network. If some of them (e.g. PURPS, RUNQUAL, SLAMM, StormTac and WBM) treat the catchment in a lumped fas ...
