The increasing importance of sustainability in urban and architectural design progressively influences the conception of urban neighborhoods. Among the multiple aspects of this evolution, the reduction of global energy consumption plays a crucial role. Its ...

Utilizing the results of a case study on the Gare-Lac sector in the city of Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland - the site is currently a large urban brownfield, intended to host ca. 3,800 additional inhabitants and 1,200 jobs upon completion - this work examines how to design attractive urban neighbourhoods that generate endogenous economic activity and foster socio-cultural dynamics, while moving towards local energy self-sufficiency. Exploring the different dimensions influencing energy self-sufficiency at th

The regeneration of brownfields in European metropolitan areas represents an important potential to mitigate urban sprawl by increasing density within the existing built fabric and to revitalize portions of cities at the neighbourhood scale. Although resea ...

In Switzerland as in most European countries, the last decades of urban development have put much pressure on the environment due to uncontrolled urban sprawl. The existing peripheral residential built-up areas mostly composed of single-family houses are r ...

The research and teaching project GREEN DENSITY focuses on the sector of Waldstadt, a strip of forest bordering the city of Bern and separated from the Bremgarten forest by the highway. This field of investigation is particularly adapted to explore the above-mentioned stakes. The process includes the elaboration of six visions from students’ projects developed within Prof. Emmanuel Rey’s workshop. Through complementary approaches, they aim at experimenting, comparing and assessing diverse possible urban for

In the context of temporary events, the use of structural systems suitable for short-term use, is a key strategy in terms of organization. However, this type of infrastructure currently requires the implementation of significant resources, for which the ch ...

This paper presents two different approaches to deal with the assessment of the BIPV potential in building renovation projects in urban areas, taking Neuchâtel as a representative middle‐size city of the Swiss plateau. 1) A building‐scale analysis aiming t ...

In the changing history of city-river relationships, cities are today questioning strategies for “reconciliation”. Thus, rather degraded sites like riverside brownfields represent an important potential for the creation of new sustainable fluvio-neighborho ...

In the context of an increasing number of retrofitting projects and greater consideration for the criteria of sustainability, architects and engineers are looking for a global optimization of existing buildings and therefore need to multiply comparisons between different possible variants. In order to structure the approach of this complex process, research carried out with the support of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW) and the Swiss National Energy Research Foundation (NEFF) in the framewo

Because of the inherent complexity of urban brownfield regeneration projects, achieving sustainability objectives is not easy. It requires approaches adapted to the specificities of this type of operation, that allow for structured and regular follow-up, a ...

The notion of urban sprawl is a central topic of discourses about sustainable city. In Switzerland as in most European countries, many single-family houses are still being built in the farthest peripheries of urban agglomerations. Characterized by low dens ...

Regeneration of urban wastelands can contribute to revitalize and densify some portions of post-industrial European cities. A growing number of urban wasteland regenerations is now promoted by diverse territorial measures. However, it must be recognized th ...

This research aims to compare the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of new neighbourhood projects near the Rhône River in France and Switzerland. The study considers the influence of the river on energy demand and resilience to climate change of 12 project-ba ...

With 80% of its population living in cities, Latin America is one of the most urbanized regions in the planet. Its urban areas are characterized by rapid transformations that entail urban sprawl and the subsequent environmental impacts, social segregation ...

Although urban brownfields hold significant inherent potential, especially in limiting urban sprawl, a large number of sites are still awaiting a regeneration project. Moreover, many of these projects only partially or superficially address sustainability ...

The renovation of existing buildings is one of the priorities of western countries and needs to be promoted to increase the current low renovation rate, estimated to be of 0.6% per year in the European and Swiss contexts. In parallel, the implementation of ...
