Due to different temporal combinations of energy generation processes, the global warming potential (GWP) of energy supply evolves constantly. Despite this, the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to the energy consumption in buildings are commonly asse ...

Resulting from the society shift of the post-war period, urban growth and urban sprawl of infrastructure and settlements of individual housing are today at the centre of public policies’ focus, in particular due to their widely criticized environmental imp ...

The presence of vegetation can significantly affect the solar irradiation received on building surfaces. Due to the complex shape and seasonal variability of vegetation geometry, this topic has gained much attention from researchers. However, existing meth ...

Switzerland faces the dual challenge of population growth and carbon neutrality targets by 2050. Against a backdrop of housing and environmental crises, the real estate industry is promoting a sharp increase in the number of new buildings on the one hand. ...

To face climate change, Switzerland proposes the 2050 energy strategy by fixing greenhouse gas (GHG) emission targets for the built environment. Designers will then have to increase operating performances while inimizing embodied impacts. This represents a ...

The built environment is one of the major contributors of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To tackle climate change, global targets have been set for this sector. Although life-cycle assessment (LCA) methods are typically used to evaluate a building project ...

The holistic nature of sustainability has radically transformed architectural and urban design practices. On the one hand, it enforces the need for simple, efficient, graphical assessment tools to support communication among the stakeholders. On the other ...

In view of the importance of urban renewal processes, building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems can potentially provide a crucial response to the challenges of the energy turnaround. Functioning both as envelope material and electricity generator, th ...

Since tomorrow’s cities are already largely built, and as many of their buildings – with a low level of energy performance – will still be standing in 2050, urban renewal processes play an essential role towards the sustainable development of European citi ...

The building sector is known as a major contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy consumption. These impacts are commonly evaluated by life cycle assessment (LCA), which assess the potential impacts of a building from the construction to the ...

In a context of reconsideration of urban sprawl, there is certain consensus on the necessity to promote densification processes in European urban territories. Faced with this challenge, the architectural and urban project is called to play an essential role to promote the evolution of the built environment towards increased sustainability. The GREEN DENSITY interdisciplinary education and research project provides an innovative framing of these complex issues. It aims at designing, optimizing and assessing

The ambitious targets set for greenhouse gas emissions and energy efficiency by 2050 demand a critical increase of building renovation rates. This challenge is shared by most Western nations, including Europe and Switzerland, where the current annual renov ...

Switzerland has adopted the concept of the 2000 Watts society as a long term target, with an intermediate objective for 2050: a reduction of the average energy consumption per person from 6300 to 3500 watts, including a maximum of 2000 watts of non-renewab ...

As tomorrow’s cities are already largely built, and as many of their buildings have a low energy performance level, urban renewal processes are essential for the sustainable development of European cities. In this context, Building‐Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) systems, using innovative PV products as new construction material for façades and roofs, can potentially provide a crucial response for achieving long‐term carbon targets. This paper presents an integrated architectural design process for addressin

In a context of growing efforts to develop sustainability strategies, energy-related issues occupy central stage in the built environment. Thus, the energy performance of housings has improved radically over the past decades. Yet other types of buildings, ...

Despite recent developments, neighborhood-scale performance assessment at the early-design phase is seldom carried out in practice, notably due to high computational complexity, time requirement, and perceived need for expert knowledge, ultimately limiting ...

Despite recent developments, the need for adequate guidance and support in the early decision-making process of urban planners, designers, and architects has recurrently been recognized. Traditional performance assessment methods, which are often based on ...
